How to Use OBS on Ubuntu to Stream Podcast Episodes to YouTube Live in India

A practical Ubuntu-to-YouTube Live workflow for podcast episodes: install OBS, build an audio-first scene, connect securely, and test before broadcast.

To stream a podcast from Ubuntu, install OBS Studio, build a scene with your audio and a visual, connect OBS to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then test the feed before the event. YouTube does not specify a different OBS setup or ingest address for India; use the details shown for your own stream and test the venue’s upload connection.

1. Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu

OBS Project’s Linux instructions cover Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and install OBS through the OBS Project PPA and apt. Follow the current steps on the official Ubuntu installation page, since repository and package instructions can change. The documented package command is:

sudo apt install obs-studio

For a Linux distribution other than Ubuntu, OBS recommends Flathub; use the installation method appropriate to your system.

2. Create an audio-first podcast scene

Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, selecting streaming. OBS says the wizard takes hardware resources and network conditions into account. Create a scene for the episode, then add only the sources your show needs. A simple audio-first layout can use a static cover image or title card with a microphone input; add a camera or video segments only if you want them on screen. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and OBS Sources Guide.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Add a static image or media segment

Use an image source for artwork that stays visible during an audio-only conversation. To play a pre-recorded intro or segment, add a Media Source. OBS Media Source supports common audio and video formats, including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio. A VLC playlist requires VLC to be installed. Refer to OBS Media Sources.

Capture the microphone without doubling it

For an audio device available to OBS on Linux, use the relevant ALSA or PulseAudio capture source. You can set audio globally in OBS Settings → Audio, or add a device directly as a scene source. If you add the same device as a scene source, disable it in global Settings → Audio; capturing it both ways can create duplicate audio or echo. While speaking at your normal podcast volume, watch the OBS audio mixer meters to confirm the microphone is active and the level is usable. Details are in OBS Audio Sources.

3. Check YouTube Live eligibility and create the event

YouTube requires an encoder-streaming channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming and create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room using the encoder workflow. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips for eligibility and preparation guidance.

4. Connect OBS using the stream details in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key for the event.
  2. In OBS, select the YouTube RTMPS service if it is offered. If entering a server manually, use the RTMPS URL provided in the Live Control Room; check that it begins with rtmps://, not rtmp://.
  3. Enter the stream key in OBS and keep it private. It functions like a password: do not put it in a public document, screenshot, or on-air scene.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the exact URL and key shown for your stream rather than assuming a regional server address. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and encoder settings guidance.

5. Choose encoder settings that your connection can sustain

In OBS, open Settings → Output and Settings → Video to configure the encoder and video output. YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, CBR bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommended sample rate is 44.1 kHz. Use encoder options available on your Ubuntu system and test the result in the Live Control Room; the guidance is at YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Set a manageable resolution and bitrate

Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to your artwork, any on-screen video, your computer, and the tested upload connection. A static podcast cover does not need a high frame rate for motion, but YouTube does not prescribe one universal setting for podcast streams. Its bitrate table gives 2 Mbps as an example for 720p at 30 fps; treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee of stability on your particular connection. See the YouTube bitrate table.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Run an upload speed test from the location where you will broadcast. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; upload capacity can be lower than download capacity. If the connection varies, reduce the bitrate or output quality and run another test. Its streaming tips explain bandwidth planning.

6. Test, start, and end the stream safely

  1. Before the event, run a short private or unlisted test. Speak at normal volume, play any planned media, and confirm that the correct microphone is active and the meters respond as expected.
  2. Check the OBS preview for the intended image and layout. Confirm that audio is present and that any media segment plays as planned.
  3. Prepare the encoder stream at least two hours before the event, as YouTube recommends, and start sending the encoder feed at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
  4. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check that the watch page is accessible, then use the Live Control Room controls to start the scheduled event.
  5. During the episode, monitor audio, video, and stream health in OBS and Live Control Room.
  6. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop sending the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

See YouTube’s live streaming tips and its encoder setup guide for the event workflow.

7. India-specific considerations

The official OBS and YouTube instructions cited here do not establish a separate India-only OBS installation, encoder setting, eligibility rule, or ingest endpoint. For a stream hosted in India, use the URL and key displayed in that event’s Live Control Room and make the test from the actual venue and internet connection. Do not substitute an assumed local server address.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • OBS says it cannot connect: Recheck the stream key and server URL against Live Control Room. If entering a server manually, confirm the address begins with rtmps://. Keep the key private, but replace it in the control room if it may have been exposed.
  • The microphone meter does not move: Check that the intended ALSA or PulseAudio device is selected and available, then speak while watching the mixer. If you added the device as a scene source, check that it is not also enabled under Settings → Audio.
  • You hear echo or doubled audio: Remove the duplicate capture path by disabling the device in global audio settings or removing its scene-level source, depending on which capture method you intend to use.
  • The stream buffers or loses stability: Test upload speed at the broadcast location, leave YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom, and lower the bitrate or resolution before testing again.
  • The event is not available to start: Check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and that the event is set up in Live Control Room through the encoder workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud
