The video game preservation service had described its archive as more than 390 terabytes of organized collections, but current access to every individual file is not established. Here’s what the operator said led to the closure and what is known about community preservation efforts.
What happened to Myrient?
Myrient’s homepage confirms the service shut down on March 31, 2026. Before closing, it described its archive as containing more than 390 terabytes of organized downloadable collections. That size is Myrient’s own description, not an independently audited measurement. Myrient’s homepage
Why did Myrient shut down?
In its closure announcement, the Myrient operator cited insufficient funding, rising infrastructure costs, and specialized download managers that bypassed donation messages and download protections, in some cases behind a paywall. The operator said donations had not kept pace with traffic and the site could no longer be afforded. Myrient’s closure announcement
The operator said: “I have been paying more than $6000 out of pocket every month in order to cover the difference which is not sustainable.” This is the operator’s self-reported monthly contribution; the announcement does not identify them by a full name or formal title. Is the Myrient archive backed up?
There are community preservation efforts, but their existence does not establish that every Myrient file can be accessed today. MiNERVA describes itself as a community-driven effort to archive Myrient and distribute files through torrents. Its published process is to browse or search, download torrent files, open them in a torrent client, and seed files to help distribute them; it recommends the free, open-source client qBittorrent. The FAQ does not guarantee that any particular file is available or lawful to download. MiNERVA FAQ
On March 15, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that a Save Myrient community moderator said the mirror had been backed up and validated, with torrent generation underway. The report described a 385 TB resource. That is a dated community claim reported by the publication, not a current independent audit or confirmation of item-by-item availability. No. Myrient’s homepage says hShop was not affected by the closure and that donations received after March 31, 2026 go toward hShop’s monthly hosting costs. The former Myrient archive and hShop should not be treated as the same service. Myrient homepage notice about hShop
