If FFmpeg exits, it stops sending media to YouTube. First find out why the process stopped, then check whether YouTube is receiving data and whether the ingest settings are valid. For unattended recovery, use a process supervisor to restart FFmpeg after failure—but a restart alone cannot guarantee that YouTube will accept the next connection.
1. Confirm whether FFmpeg actually exited
Record when the stream went offline, whether the FFmpeg process is still running, its exit code if it stopped, and the final lines of its log. The player showing “offline” does not identify the cause.
- FFmpeg exited: use its final error messages to investigate an input, decoding, or output-connection failure.
- FFmpeg is still running: check whether it is reading and producing audio/video and whether output packets are reaching YouTube. An input stall or failed output connection can leave the process alive.
2. Check YouTube’s stream state and health
In Live Control Room, inspect the stream status and health diagnostics. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes active (data is being received), inactive (no data is being received), and other states such as ready and error. Health indicators include good, ok, bad, and noData; the API also exposes configuration issues. These signals help separate missing ingest from a configuration problem, but they do not by themselves identify every local FFmpeg failure. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams.
inactiveornoData: investigate whether FFmpeg is producing frames and whether its output is reaching the configured ingest address.noDatameans the backend lacks health information; it is not proof of a particular fault.bador a configuration issue: follow the reported diagnostic instead of randomly changing codecs or bitrate.active: YouTube reports receiving data. If viewers still cannot see the stream, investigate the stream state and player-facing status separately.
3. Verify the ingest URL and stream key
Compare the URL and key in the FFmpeg command with the current values in YouTube Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from the Stream URL control and use it with the stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” For connection timeouts or SSL errors, verify the server URL and protocol and confirm the installed encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not expose it in public logs, support tickets, screenshots, or source-controlled scripts. If it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the sender with the new key.
4. Match the fix to FFmpeg’s last error
Input, read, or decode error
Check that the input is available, readable, and in the expected format. If the source is a finite file, reaching end-of-file is different from an endless source disappearing. Choose an appropriate loop or input-recovery strategy for that source; an output reconnect option cannot make unavailable input frames appear.

Output or connection error
Recheck the ingest URL, protocol, key, network reachability, and YouTube health diagnostics. For RTMPS timeout or SSL errors, YouTube’s guidance specifically points to verifying the URL/protocol and encoder support. Avoid changing unrelated encoding settings until the connection issue is understood.
FFmpeg remains alive but YouTube receives no data
Determine whether the input is stalled, whether audio/video frames are still being produced, and whether output packets reach the configured ingest address. A running process is not evidence that media is reaching YouTube.

5. Don’t assume HTTP reconnect flags repair RTMP output
FFmpeg documents HTTP protocol options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_on_network_error. Those options describe HTTP reconnection behavior; they do not establish a universal reconnect switch for RTMP or RTMPS output to YouTube. Check the transport used by the command and the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on the machine before adding flags. FFmpeg protocol documentation: HTTP and FFmpeg protocol documentation: RTMP.
6. Keep an unattended FFmpeg process supervised
For a stream that must recover without manual intervention, run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor. Configure it to restart after an unexpected exit, retain useful logs, and avoid an immediate, unbounded restart loop. Then validate the actual command and stream with a controlled failure before relying on it unattended.

A supervisor restores process availability; it does not fix a broken input, invalid key, unreachable ingest, or YouTube-side configuration issue. There is no universal restart interval or guaranteed recovery sequence established for every FFmpeg command and YouTube stream. Service-manager configuration depends on the operating system and supervisor you use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Understand what backup ingest does—and does not do
YouTube documents primary and backup ingest addresses and describes sending the same content to the backup as optional simultaneous streaming. That is a redundant sending path, not automatic failover for a single FFmpeg process that has exited. Before using it, confirm that the sender can transmit to both addresses and that the outputs match the stream settings. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams.

Choose a recovery approach
| Approach | What it addresses | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Manual restart | Restarts FFmpeg after you diagnose the failure. | The stream remains down until someone acts; the underlying cause may remain. |
| Process supervisor | Restarts FFmpeg after an unexpected process exit and can retain logs. | Does not repair input, connection, key, or YouTube-side problems. |
| Redundant sender to backup ingest | Provides a second sending path when deliberately configured for simultaneous delivery. | Not automatic recovery from one exited sender; both outputs must be compatible. |
When comparing designs, account for the process recovery mechanism, RTMP versus the YouTube-provided RTMPS URL, whether the input is a finite file, loop, or live source, and how you will observe local FFmpeg logs alongside YouTube status and health.
Or let it run in the cloud
