Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes: a spare PC can run Streamlabs Desktop as the encoder for a continuous YouTube livestream. Connect YouTube, build a simple scene, choose settings the computer and internet connection can sustain, and test the full setup before relying on it. But “always-on” is an operating goal, not a documented Streamlabs Desktop guarantee: plan to monitor the stream and decide how you will respond to power, software, or network failures.
Check whether the spare PC is suitable
Streamlabs’ system-requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 or higher and 8 GB RAM as minimum requirements. Its recommended guidance lists Windows 10 or macOS 13 or higher, an 11th- or 12th-generation Intel Core i5 or higher or AMD Ryzen 5000-series or higher, Nvidia RTX 20/30-series or AMD RX 5000/6000-series graphics, at least 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD or larger, and Ethernet. The minimum and recommended OS lines differ on the page, so check the current requirements for your installed operating system rather than treating either list as an uptime guarantee. Streamlabs Desktop system requirements.
Streamlabs gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a broad guideline for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. That is not a guarantee that a particular connection has enough stable upload capacity for your stream. The older PC’s encoder capability, temperature and cooling, RAM, disk condition, scene complexity, and network stability all matter. Use Ethernet if possible, as Streamlabs recommends, and test the exact scene and output settings you intend to leave running.
What to check before setup
- Confirm the operating system and hardware against Streamlabs’ current requirements.
- Check that the PC stays cool and responsive while running the intended scene and encoder.
- Prefer a wired Ethernet connection, then test the connection under the same conditions you expect during the stream.
- Keep the scene lean: animated overlays and browser sources can add load without being essential to a continuous feed.
Enable YouTube Live and connect Streamlabs
YouTube must have live streaming enabled for the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. You can connect your YouTube account through Streamlabs’ onboarding flow, or use YouTube’s encoder setup with a stream URL and stream key. A stream key is a credential: do not show it in a screenshot, recording, or public scene. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and Streamlabs’ quick-start guide.

- Open Streamlabs Desktop and connect YouTube. Follow its platform-connection prompts, or configure the encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and key.
- Create a scene for the continuous feed. Add only the sources needed for the content: for example, a media source, a static overlay, and appropriate audio. Capture sources, webcams, and widgets are optional, not requirements.
- Check media behavior before leaving the PC. Confirm that the source plays, loops if that is what you intend, and behaves acceptably after a playback or connection interruption. Do not assume every source universally loops or recovers in the same way.
Choose video and encoder settings the PC can sustain
Start conservatively, then validate the complete scene. Streamlabs recommends 1280×720 as a balance between performance and quality in its July 9, 2026 getting-started guide. The base canvas can match the monitor resolution; the viewer-facing output should be equal to or smaller than the base. Higher output resolutions and frame rates increase processing and bitrate demands. Streamlabs suggests 30 FPS for slower content and 60 FPS for faster action in its quick-start guidance, but the right choice depends on the content and the spare PC. See Getting Started with Streamlabs Desktop.
Set the canvas and output
- Open Settings > Video.
- Set the base canvas to match the monitor or working canvas used by your scene.
- Set the output resolution to the same size or smaller. If performance is uncertain, begin at 1280×720 rather than assuming the old PC can sustain 1080p.
- Choose a frame rate appropriate to the material. Lower frame rates generally reduce processing and upload demand.
Select an encoder and bitrate
In Settings > Output, choose an encoder that fits the PC. x264 uses the CPU; NVENC uses a dedicated Nvidia GPU encoder, and Streamlabs recommends NVENC New for Nvidia cards. Which performs better depends on the actual hardware, scene, and load, so test rather than choosing by name alone.

Bitrate requirements rise with resolution and frame rate. Streamlabs’ optimization guidance describes Dynamic Bitrate as adjusting bitrate to network conditions to reduce dropped frames; it does not prevent every interruption. Begin with a restrained combination of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then watch stream health and dropped-frame behavior during a test. Streamlabs’ optimization guidance discusses these trade-offs.
Test the complete stream before leaving it running
A preview alone does not establish that viewers receive good audio and video. Streamlabs’ checklist calls for checking widget and alert behavior, preview framing, and audio-meter response. YouTube recommends testing, monitoring audio and video quality, checking event accessibility, and verifying local archive files. An unlisted or private test viewed from another device is a practical way to check the viewer experience before going public. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

- If a local recording is part of your backup plan, verify that a file is being created and growing.
- Check the physical PC and network connection before the intended launch.
For an evergreen feed there may be no scheduled event, but the same quality checks still apply. Streamlabs’ documentation does not establish that Desktop automatically restarts after every crash or operating-system restart, or that it always reconnects to YouTube without operator action. Test restart and reconnection behavior yourself; do not treat an unattended recovery workflow as a verified Streamlabs feature.
Plan around long streams, archives, and DVR
A live feed and its replay archive are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup if preservation matters. YouTube also warns that DVR functionality may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

If a complete replay is important, use local recording and consider dividing an all-day broadcast into shorter sessions that fit YouTube’s stated archive window. Confirm that the local recording is working and that the disk has room; an active stream alone does not confirm that a usable archive exists.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlabs preview stutters or frames lag | GPU or compositor load, scene complexity | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, remove unnecessary animated or browser sources, and retest the full scene. |
| Encoder skips frames | CPU or encoder load | Try a less demanding output, or test the other encoder option available on your hardware. x264 uses CPU; NVENC uses a dedicated Nvidia GPU encoder. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Network connection or bitrate demand | Use Ethernet if possible, reduce bitrate or output demands, and retest. Dynamic Bitrate may adjust to network conditions, but cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming. |
| Viewers hear silence or the wrong audio | Audio source routing or source playback | Check that the intended source is active, watch the audio meter, and listen to a test stream from another device. |
| Stream does not start on YouTube | Live activation, platform connection, stream URL or key | Confirm YouTube Live is enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, and verify the configured connection or encoder credentials without exposing the key. |
| Stream ends after a crash, restart, or connection failure | PC, operating system, Streamlabs, network, or YouTube ingest | Check the failed component, restart or reconnect as needed, and verify the watch page and stream health. Streamlabs’ reviewed documentation does not establish universal unattended recovery; test any restart workflow in advance. |
| Long stream is missing from archives or lacks rewind | YouTube archive or DVR duration limits | Use local recording for preservation and shorter sessions if a complete YouTube replay matters. Very long streams may not be archived or may have limited DVR. |
Streamlabs’ public repository offers supplementary troubleshooting context: it associates lagged frames commonly with GPU or compositor load, skipped frames with encoder or CPU load, and dropped frames with network problems. Treat these as useful starting points, not definitive diagnoses; the repository is mutable and some passages may reflect older interface versions. StreamlabsSupport’s public repository.
