If Streamlabs Desktop says your YouTube stream key is wrong when you start a 24/7 broadcast, first identify whether you connected through Streamlabs’ YouTube login or entered a key manually. Then confirm Streamlabs is targeting the intended YouTube event and, for manual key entry, replace the encoder’s key with the current one from YouTube Studio. If those checks do not resolve it, use the Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health errors to investigate format, bitrate, encoder, or network issues. The available documentation does not establish one cause for every startup error.
Start by identifying how Streamlabs is connected
The right fix depends on whether Streamlabs Desktop is using your YouTube account authorization or a manually entered stream key. Streamlabs documents both a YouTube login and event-selection flow and a workflow for selecting an event created in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s generic advice to replace a key applies when an encoder is using a key; it does not establish that a key is the problem in an account-integration error.
- Account login: You authorized YouTube through Streamlabs and use its Go Live flow. If this integration reports an error, YouTube directs users to the software provider.
- Manual key: You copied a stream key from YouTube Studio and entered it in Streamlabs. Check that it is current and belongs to the intended channel or event.
- Studio-created event: You created an event in YouTube Studio and select it inside Streamlabs. Verify that the selected event is the one you intend to start.
These are distinct setup routes, not evidence that one is universally better for continuous streaming. See Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide and its YouTube streaming instructions for the documented workflows.
Check the selected YouTube event
If you already created the broadcast in YouTube Studio, Streamlabs’ documented flow is to open Go Live, choose the event from the drop-down, and confirm. Make sure the selected event is the correct one. A valid key will not help if Streamlabs is pointed at the wrong event, and an event-selection problem should not be assumed to be a rejected key.

Refresh a manually entered stream key safely
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live / Live Control Room.
- Open the stream setup and copy the current stream key for the intended channel or event.
- Update the key in the Streamlabs Desktop settings where you configured the stream, then try starting the broadcast again.
- If you reset the key in YouTube Studio, update every encoder that used the old key. Do not publish or share the key; treat it like a password.
YouTube’s generic encoder-start remedy is: “To fix it, get a new stream key in the Live Control Room and update your encoder.” That guidance supports refreshing a manually configured key, but it does not confirm that a stale key caused this particular failure. Follow YouTube’s stream troubleshooting steps for your specific setup.
Try Streamlabs’ general startup remedies
After confirming the connection mode, event, and key, Streamlabs lists several general troubleshooting actions:

- Double-check that the stream key is correct if you use one.
- Log out of Streamlabs Desktop, restart the app as administrator, and log back in.
- For the connection or path errors covered in its guide, refresh the selected streaming service and choose a server instead of Auto.
These are vendor troubleshooting suggestions, not a confirmed fix for every YouTube key error. In particular, changing a server or running as administrator should not be treated as proof that the key was wrong.
Read YouTube’s stream-health error before changing encoder settings
If the event and connection are correct, open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its timestamped stream-health messages. The exact message matters: YouTube’s error guidance covers format and bitrate problems among other encoder issues, so a startup failure can be misreported or mistaken for a key problem.

For YouTube’s listed incorrect-format case, video should be H.264 and audio should be AAC. Compare the encoder’s output with the error YouTube actually reports rather than changing unrelated settings at random. The Live Control Room’s health indicator and YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guide are the relevant next checks.
Separate encoder problems from connection problems
YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder, including its health and CPU load. If the encoder output looks healthy, investigate the outbound connection. A network disruption can break a live stream, and YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom: its streaming tips specify 20% above the total stream bitrate. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- If the encoder reports overload or unhealthy output, reduce the load or address the encoder issue before treating the failure as a network problem.
- If encoder output is healthy but YouTube reports an interrupted or unstable connection, test the outbound connection and available bandwidth.
- An Ethernet connection may be worth trying when instability remains plausible, but it is not a fix for a rejected key.

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If the key, event, and encoder checks do not explain the failure, confirm the channel is eligible to stream. The 90-day period is YouTube’s stated eligibility condition, not an estimate of how often restrictions cause this error. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

What changes when the broadcast is meant to run 24/7
A stream that runs continuously for a day exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” It recommends making a local recording as a backup. Do not rely on YouTube to produce a complete replay of one continuous 24-hour broadcast if you need a durable copy.
The same duration can affect viewers during the live broadcast: YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That is separate from whether Streamlabs can connect or start the encoder. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance and its DVR guidance.
When to contact support
If you use Streamlabs’ YouTube account integration and it continues to fail after checking the selected event and restarting the app, contact Streamlabs support with the exact error text and your Streamlabs version and operating system. If YouTube Live Control Room displays a health message, include that message and its timestamp. For a manual-key setup, state whether you refreshed the key and updated the encoder. Never send your stream key in a support post or public message.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube broadcast from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo avoids keeping Streamlabs and a home computer running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, and StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. It does not broadcast from a camera.
