First choose the right vMix playback model: a PlayList sequences separate inputs, while a List input plays a sequence of media files through one input. YouTube channel playlists are a different feature. vMix scripting can launch automation, but the exact playlist-control function names should be confirmed in your installed version before you build a script.
Choose what you mean by “playlist”
In vMix, the names refer to two different production tools, neither of which is a YouTube channel playlist.

A List input can also be placed inside a standard PlayList. This lets you combine media-level playback with switching among other production inputs. vMix notes that a List can avoid loading all videos at once, which may be useful when a sequence contains many files.
Build the sequence in vMix
For separate production inputs: use PlayList
- Add the relevant inputs to the vMix PlayList and arrange them in the order you want.
- Choose the options appropriate to the show. These include Loop, Begin from selected item, Clear Overlays and Manual Mode.
- Start the PlayList. Use Previous and Next when you need to move between items manually; those controls use each item’s transition.
For a sequence of media files: use a List input
- Create a List input containing the video or audio files, or the M3U playlist, you want to play.
- Set the desired automatic-next and loop behavior for the List input.
- Put the List input on air as the production input viewers should see.
Choose based on the unit you want to control: a PlayList changes among inputs; a List input advances among files within one input. The built-in PlayList is for basic sequential or manual operation, not a clock-time broadcast schedule.

Create and launch a vMix script
vMix documentation identifies scripting as available in the 4K and Pro editions. The documentation currently points to vMix 29, but menus, licensing and available functions can differ by installed release; check your own edition and version.
- Open Settings > Scripting.
- Create a script with a unique name and configure its actions.
- Open Settings > Shortcuts, select Add, and create a shortcut using the ScriptStart function.
- Enter the script’s name in the shortcut, then trigger that shortcut to start the script.
Web Scripting is another way to run an ordered sequence of functions; it can insert Sleep delays between function lines. Its function syntax matches the Web API syntax without the URL portion.

Verify playlist functions before relying on automation
Do not assume that a function name found in an online example exists in your vMix release. vMix’s API documentation says callable functions are the ones shown in the Shortcuts function dropdown. In vMix, open Settings > Shortcuts > Add and inspect the installed function list, then verify the actions and behavior in that release.
The documented material does not establish exact PlayList start, stop or advance function names. For that reason, a script using guessed names may fail or behave differently than intended. Confirm each function in the dropdown and test the shortcut before depending on it during a live broadcast.

Set YouTube Live as a separate destination
The vMix sequence controls the production output; YouTube Live is the destination configured separately. In vMix, set up the YouTube Live destination or create/select the YouTube stream and complete the required credentials or stream-key workflow. vMix’s Stream Now guidance describes logging in, creating a stream or selecting a scheduled event, and then starting the stream in vMix.
Once the destination is configured and the vMix output is streaming, viewers receive that output as your inputs change. A vMix PlayList does not change or manage a YouTube channel’s own playlists.

Know the scheduling limitation
vMix says it does not support time-of-day scheduling and is designed primarily for single live events. Its built-in PlayList can handle basic sequential switching, such as looping several video inputs, but it is not a clock-based 24/7 broadcast scheduler. A third-party project called vMix Scheduler is mentioned in vMix support material, which says it is no longer maintained and its compatibility is uncertain; do not assume it will work with your installation.

- The wrong kind of sequence is playing: Check whether you added separate inputs to PlayList or media files to a List input. These operate at different levels.
- The script does not start: Confirm the ScriptStart shortcut uses the exact unique script name, and that scripting is available in your vMix edition.
- A playlist action is not recognized: Recheck the function name in Settings > Shortcuts > Add for your installed release. Do not rely on an unverified example name.
- The wrong input or transition appears: Review the PlayList order and each item’s transition; Previous and Next move using the item’s transition.
- The sequence stops or repeats unexpectedly: Check the PlayList Loop and Manual Mode options, or the List input’s automatic-next and loop settings, depending on which feature you are using.
- vMix is running but YouTube is not receiving the show: Check the separately configured YouTube destination, selected stream or scheduled event, and credentials or stream-key workflow in vMix.
- You need a show to change at a particular time of day: Built-in PlayList automation does not provide that scheduling capability. The named third-party scheduler is no longer maintained, with uncertain compatibility.
