How to Make vMix Switch to a Backup Playlist When a Video File Fails

vMix documents normal list progression and input switching, but not failover when a video fails to open. Set up a backup path and test the exact error condition.

vMix can sequence video files with a List input and switch between inputs with PlayList, but its documentation does not confirm that either feature—or the OnCompletion trigger—will detect a file that fails to open or decode. Set up a clearly labeled backup path, then test the exact failure on your installed vMix version before relying on automatic failover.

Choose the right vMix feature

Feature What it sequences What it does
List Video and audio files within one input Auto Next is enabled by default for ordinary progression. Loop returns playback to the beginning after the list reaches its end. Disabled entries can be skipped, and the current list can be exported as an M3U file. These documented behaviors do not establish that an unreadable file will be skipped. vMix List documentation
PlayList Separate vMix inputs Automates switching tasks or plays multiple videos sequentially. Items can have individual starting positions, durations, transitions, and transition times. In Manual Mode, the operator clicks Next to advance; the next item’s transition is used. PlayLists belong to the active preset. vMix PlayList documentation

Use a List when the files belong together in one input. Use a PlayList when you need to sequence separate inputs, such as a primary source and a distinct backup source.

Build a backup path you can operate

  1. Prepare known-good content. Check that the primary files and the backup media are available and play correctly before the production. Keep the backup content in a separate input or backup playlist if you need a source you can deliberately route to.
  2. Label the inputs clearly. Use names that distinguish the primary sequence from the backup, so an operator can identify the intended source quickly.
  3. Configure the intended sequence. In PlayList, add the inputs in the desired order and set each item’s starting position, duration, transition, and transition time. If you choose Manual Mode, rehearse clicking Next; it waits for operator action.
  4. Keep an operator fallback. Have a known-good input ready to select if the primary video stops. PlayList’s Manual Mode and Next command provide a documented way to control progression, but rehearse the actual preset and media rather than assuming a failed item will advance correctly.

vMix describes PlayList as a way to “automate switching tasks or play multiple videos sequentially.” That is normal input sequencing, not a documented promise of error-triggered failover.

Understand what OnCompletion does—and does not establish

The documented OnCompletion trigger applies when a video or List input reaches the end with Loop disabled. vMix’s trigger guidance recommends PlayList or Scripting for long-running operations and limits trigger delay to 30 seconds. It does not say that a file-open or decoding failure counts as completion. vMix Triggers documentation

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Therefore, OnCompletion may be appropriate for a normal end-of-file event, but do not treat it as a confirmed signal for a failed video. Test those two cases separately: a file that plays to its end, and one that cannot be opened or decoded.

Test the actual failure before going live

  1. Make a test copy of the preset and use non-live output.
  2. Confirm normal playback and the expected List or PlayList progression.
  3. With Loop disabled, verify whether OnCompletion fires when a valid file reaches its end.
  4. Reproduce the failure safely—for example, remove access to a test copy or use a known-invalid test file—and observe whether that vMix release stops, advances, or fires a trigger.
  5. Repeat with the same storage location and media format planned for production. A successful test with one failure mode does not prove behavior for every missing, damaged, or undecodable file.
  6. Keep a manual switch path available unless you have verified a reliable failure signal and its response in your setup.

Call the arrangement automatic failover only if the controlled test demonstrates that the specific failure is detected and the backup is selected as intended.

Why scripting or the API may not solve detection by itself

The vMix Web API can execute shortcut functions and expose vMix state; its documentation says API errors return HTTP 500. Web Scripting can run sequences of API-style functions with Sleep pauses. The reviewed documentation does not establish that a failed video produces an API error, a distinctive state change, or an event that can trigger a backup switch. vMix Web API documentation vMix Web Scripting documentation

If automatic detection is essential, first verify that an external monitor or custom automation can see the exact failure signal. Only then connect that signal to a switch command and test the complete chain. A script that can issue a switch command is not, by itself, evidence that it can detect a media failure.

Keep looping and 24/7 scheduling distinct

vMix’s knowledge base describes List and PlayList as basic ways to play videos consecutively and loop them. It separately says vMix does not provide time-of-day scheduling for 24/7 television programming; ordinary looping should not be confused with either scheduling or guaranteed recovery from an unavailable file. vMix knowledge base: playing videos in a loop or sequentially

Or let it run in the cloud

If the actual goal is to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option, not a vMix failover feature. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
