There is no universal FFmpeg reconnect flag that fixes a YouTube livestream dropping. First determine whether FFmpeg’s source input is failing or its RTMP(S) publishing connection to YouTube is failing: the often-cited reconnect options are documented for HTTP, not as a general RTMP output repair. Then check the controls that apply to the failing side.
First identify which connection is failing
A livestream can break at either end of FFmpeg’s media path: the connection bringing video or audio into FFmpeg, or the connection carrying the encoded stream from FFmpeg to YouTube. A reconnect option aimed at the input will not necessarily restore the publishing connection, and vice versa.
- Suspect the input if FFmpeg reports errors while reading the source URL, or the source stops producing data while the YouTube publishing connection remains open.
- Suspect publishing or YouTube ingest if the input continues but FFmpeg reports an output connection error, YouTube Live Control Room reports ingest trouble, or the stream disconnects at the destination.
- Use the log, not just the player: note the timestamp and exact FFmpeg error, then compare it with Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. A frozen player alone does not identify which connection failed.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation scopes its reconnect options to HTTP. Check the documentation for your installed build and the protocol actually used by the failing connection before adding flags: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
When the source input is HTTP
If FFmpeg is reading a live or endless source over HTTP and that input disconnects, HTTP protocol options may help. They are not a universal remedy, and their availability or behavior can depend on the installed FFmpeg build. Inspect the build’s options with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| HTTP option | What it addresses |
|---|---|
reconnect |
Reconnect after a disconnect before the input reaches EOF. |
reconnect_at_eof |
Treat EOF as an error that causes reconnection; useful for live or endless streams when EOF should not end the input. |
reconnect_streamed |
Allow reconnection for streamed, non-seekable inputs as well. |
reconnect_on_network_error |
Reconnect for network errors, where supported by the installed build. |
reconnect_delay_max |
Set a maximum reconnection delay. |
reconnect_max_retries |
Limit the number of retries. |
reconnect_delay_total_max |
Limit total time spent waiting through reconnect delays. |
These are HTTP protocol controls. Do not add them to an RTMP(S) YouTube publishing output on the assumption they repair that connection. The FFmpeg documentation describes reconnect_at_eof as treating EOF like an error and reconnecting, a behavior intended for live or endless streams: FFmpeg HTTP protocol options.
When FFmpeg’s YouTube publishing connection drops
Confirm the destination and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key for the live stream you intend to use.
- Use the RTMPS destination supplied by YouTube if your FFmpeg setup supports it. For an SSL-related error, verify that the destination uses
rtmps, notrtmp; use port 443 where it is appropriate to the URL YouTube provided. - Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password, and redact it before sharing a command or log.
For YouTube’s RTMPS setup details, see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. Stream settings and destination details are managed through Live Control Room; see Manage live stream settings.

Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance
Check the actual output settings rather than assuming the command’s intended values are being sent. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 examples include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; these are recommendations, not guarantees that a connection will remain stable.
- Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate; do not assume one bitrate applies to every configuration.
- Measure sustained upload capacity and leave room for variation. An upload-speed test is useful, but a representative preflight stream is a better check of the actual setup.
- Confirm the stream is using CBR and the keyframe interval is within YouTube’s guidance.
See YouTube’s encoder settings for the current recommendations and bitrate table. The bitrate examples above do not diagnose a disconnect by themselves.

Preflight and isolate a recurring failure
- Test with the same source, command, network, resolution and frame rate you plan to use live.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages alongside FFmpeg’s output log. Record the first error and whether it concerns input or output.
- If you have a backup encoder configured, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then check that the player rolls to the backup.
- If recording locally, verify the archive file is growing during the test. Monitor audio and video continuously rather than checking only that a process is still running.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an input read or HTTP disconnect error | Source input | Confirm the input protocol and inspect ffmpeg -h protocol=http if it is HTTP. Apply only options supported by that build. |
| FFmpeg reports a publishing connection timeout | Destination or network path | Re-copy the Live Control Room URL and key, confirm RTMPS support and check that the provided destination is reachable. |
| FFmpeg reports an SSL error | RTMPS configuration | Check that the URL uses rtmps, not rtmp, and use port 443 where appropriate to YouTube’s supplied URL. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or an encoder warning | Encoder output or upload capacity | Compare codec, CBR, frame rate, keyframe interval and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance; run a representative test. |
| The player freezes but logs do not clearly identify the side | Unresolved | Correlate timestamps in FFmpeg’s log with Live Control Room messages and check whether the input and local recording continue. |
What to include when asking for help
A precise reconnect command cannot be prescribed without knowing the FFmpeg version and build, full command, input URL scheme or protocol, and exact disconnect error. Share those details with the stream key and other credentials removed. Include whether the input keeps running, whether a local archive continues growing, and what Live Control Room reports at the same time.
