To prevent dropped frames during playlist playback in vMix, first find where they occur: check whether the local vMix output is also stuttering, then monitor Render Time, GPU Mem, CPU use and the relevant counters in the Statistics window while the playlist is playing. High graphics load, CPU or encoding pressure, an input problem, and an unstable upload connection need different fixes. A playlist by itself does not identify the cause.
Find out where the frames are dropping
Run a short test with the same output profile and playlist segment that causes the problem. If appropriate, use a private or unlisted YouTube test. Note when the issue begins and compare the local vMix output with the stream preview and YouTube playback.
- Local output stutters too: investigate rendering, system load, or the media/input path.
- Local output is smooth but the stream is not: investigate encoding and delivery, including upload stability. Do not assume the playlist file is defective.
- Only a particular input stutters: check its source and the relevant Statistics counters before changing output settings.
Keep the output profile unchanged during the initial test so that you can compare results. Change one setting at a time afterward and record whether it affects local output, the stream, or both.
Read vMix’s performance indicators
Watch the indicators while the playlist is active, not just when the production is idle. vMix’s performance advice and figures are vendor guidance, not universal hardware limits; the relevant documentation is from different vMix versions and dates, so confirm labels and options in your installed version.

Render Time and GPU Mem
According to vMix’s Optimising Performance guide, consistently higher than 20 ms Render Time suggests the graphics card is near its limit. The vMix performance-statistics guidance says GPU Mem reaching 100% can lead to high render times, dropped frames, or stutters. Treat these as clues: a high reading during the problem is more useful than a one-off reading outside it.
CPU use and encoding
vMix says CPU handles audio and video compression as well as recording and streaming. Its performance-statistics article recommends total system CPU at 70% or lower for best performance. Total CPU includes other applications, so check both vMix’s own load and overall system use. High CPU can point to encoding or other CPU work; it does not by itself prove that the playlist decoder is responsible.

Statistics counters
Open the Statistics window and inspect the relevant input’s counters. vMix defines Source Dropped as associated with a slow camera/capture source or bandwidth bottleneck, Renderer Dropped as the graphics card running slowly, and Resync as a source running too fast. These counters are particularly useful for live inputs. Do not treat every lost frame in the outgoing YouTube stream as a Source Dropped event.
See vMix’s Statistics guidance for the counter meanings.

Reduce graphics and production pressure
If Render Time or GPU Mem rises during the stutter, test graphics-related changes before buying hardware.
- Match the vMix master frame rate and output size closely to the camera sources where practical. vMix explains these performance considerations in its performance guide.
- Disable Low Latency Capture unless its latency reduction matters to your production. vMix warns that it increases GPU load and may contribute to dropped frames under heavy load; see its Low Latency Capture guidance.
- For a controlled comparison, close unnecessary applications and simplify overlays or inputs. These are diagnostic experiments, not guaranteed fixes.
Make one change, replay the same segment, and compare the same indicators. If local output remains smooth and the graphics readings are not elevated, a graphics change may not address the actual bottleneck.

Choose an encoder the system can sustain
Check the streaming encoder selected in vMix and its status while streaming. vMix’s version 28 streaming-settings documentation describes FFMPEG as recommended and says NVIDIA hardware encoding can substantially reduce CPU use. Compatibility and available encoder capacity depend on the installed vMix version and GPU; consult the documentation for that version rather than relying on a historical simultaneous-encode limit. See vMix Streaming Settings.
Hardware encoding is worth testing when CPU pressure is high and the hardware encoder is supported and available. It is not a universal fix: it will not resolve an unstable upload, a source/capture problem, or every media-decoding bottleneck.

Check the upload and network buffer
Confirm that the selected stream bitrate is sustainable on the actual upload connection, including its fluctuations during the playlist. Check vMix’s View Status while the stream is running. The available evidence does not establish a universal upload-speed multiplier or a current YouTube bitrate recommendation, so avoid treating a single speed-test result as proof that the connection is stable enough.
vMix’s Network Buffer guide describes the setting as the maximum time vMix can hold network data and suggests increasing it when available network speed is unreliable. A larger buffer can help absorb fluctuations, but adds latency and cannot make a persistently insufficient connection faster. Increase it modestly, then check both stream stability and delay.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Reproduce the fault: preserve the output profile, run the playlist segment, and compare local output, stream preview, and YouTube playback.
- Check graphics: observe Render Time and GPU Mem during the problem. Sustained Render Time above 20 ms or GPU Mem at 100% is a vMix-documented warning sign, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
- Check CPU and encoder: compare vMix CPU with total system CPU, then verify the selected encoder and status. Test supported hardware encoding if CPU pressure is evident.
- Inspect input statistics: distinguish Source Dropped, Renderer Dropped, and Resync rather than grouping them as one kind of dropped frame.
- Reduce avoidable load: test Low Latency Capture off if it is enabled, align master frame rate and output size with sources, and simplify production elements one at a time.
- Check delivery: confirm bitrate sustainability and View Status; if network speed fluctuates, test a modestly larger Network Buffer while accounting for added latency.
- Consider hardware only after measurement: if indicators point to a GPU limit, vMix’s June 6, 2025 performance guide gives a modern mid-range card such as a GeForce 3050 or higher as an example. This is a conditional example, not a requirement or a fix for CPU, source, or network issues.
Common symptoms and what to test
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Local output and stream both stutter; Render Time rises | Graphics rendering pressure | Check GPU Mem, reduce avoidable graphics load, and test with Low Latency Capture disabled if enabled. |
| Local output is smooth; YouTube playback drops or stutters | Encoding or network delivery | Check encoder status, CPU load, bitrate sustainability, View Status, and network fluctuations. |
| One live input has Source Dropped events | Input, capture source, or source bandwidth | Check the source path and capture-device bandwidth rather than treating it as an output-rendering fault. |
| Renderer Dropped events increase | Slow graphics rendering | Watch Render Time and GPU Mem during the affected segment. |
| Resync increases | Source timing; the source may be running too fast | Investigate the source timing and frame-rate relationship. |
| Network speed fluctuates and stream interruptions occur | Unreliable delivery connection | Check View Status and test a modestly larger Network Buffer, recognizing the latency trade-off. |
These are diagnostic branches, not definitive diagnoses. If the cause remains unclear, the useful details to collect are the media format, computer and GPU, vMix version, stream settings, and whether local playback also stutters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel rather than troubleshoot a local vMix production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
