For a prerecorded video sent through a YouTube Live event, configure the live ingest encoder—not the file itself—for the target frame rate. A practical starting point is x264enc bitrate=14000 key-int-max=60 for 1080p30 or bitrate=17000 key-int-max=120 for 1080p60. YouTube recommends H.264 CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the listed bitrates; GStreamer describes x264enc’s CBR mode as average bitrate (ABR), so test the actual output and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Recommended 1080p settings
YouTube’s live ingest guidance recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Its published minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively; those minimums are not the recommended targets. In x264enc, bitrate is specified in kilobits per second, so use 14000 or 17000.
| Setting | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate | 14 Mbps (bitrate=14000) |
17 Mbps (bitrate=17000) |
| YouTube published H.264 minimum | 5 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| Recommended keyframe interval | 2 seconds | 2 seconds |
x264enc key-int-max for that interval |
60 frames |
120 frames |
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. key-int-max is a frame count, so calculate it from the actual frame rate: two seconds × frames per second. These examples apply to exactly 30 or 60 fps. If your source uses another rate, use the matching frame-rate guidance from YouTube and calculate the frame distance from that rate rather than copying 60 or 120.
Set up and verify x264enc
- Check the installed element. Run
gst-inspect-1.0 x264encon the machine that will encode the stream. Confirm the installed plugin exposes the properties you intend to use; GStreamer behavior can vary by release or build. - Match the output to the source and event. Decide whether the live output should be 1920×1080 at 30 or 60 fps, and ensure the pipeline negotiates those caps. A 60 fps setting does not create real motion detail if the source is only 30 fps.
- Set the bitrate and keyframe distance. Use
bitrate=14000 key-int-max=60at 30 fps orbitrate=17000 key-int-max=120at 60 fps as the starting point. Keep enough sustained upload capacity for the video bitrate plus audio and protocol overhead; an uplink that only intermittently reaches the target can cause ingest problems. - Choose a speed preset that can keep up. Presets trade encoding workload against compression efficiency and resulting quality at a given bitrate. No single preset is right for every computer and input. Test the entire pipeline at the intended resolution and frame rate to confirm encoding does not fall behind.
- Check rate-control behavior. YouTube recommends CBR, but GStreamer’s x264enc documentation describes its CBR mode as “actually ABR.” Do not assume the name guarantees strict constant-rate output. Inspect or measure the resulting stream where practical, then use YouTube’s stream-health feedback to verify it is acceptable.
- Test representative material and audio. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the intended broadcast, including the kinds of movement and sound the prerecorded program contains. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators rather than relying only on encoder settings.
The bitrate property participates in x264enc’s rate control. In CBR mode it sets the target bitrate; in constant-quantizer or constant-quality modes it acts as a maximum. Preset and tuning choices set defaults before user properties are applied, so check the effective configuration instead of assuming every default remains unchanged.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Should you enable tune=zerolatency?
Not automatically. GStreamer warns that x264enc can buffer frames and add latency; in a complex pipeline, that buffering can cause stalls when queues in other branches fill. Its documentation describes tune=zerolatency as a possible workaround, but notes a trade-off in overall encoding quality. The GStreamer tutorial likewise characterizes it as a lower-quality option more suitable for live-streaming scenarios.
- For prerecorded playback, encoder delay may not matter if the pipeline continues to flow and the broadcast timing is acceptable.
- If latency is causing a pipeline stall or is otherwise important to the workflow, test
tune=zerolatencyand compare quality at the same output settings. - For complex pipelines, review queue limits or consider a multiqueue when encoder buffering causes another branch to block. Changing queue behavior can affect memory use and pipeline flow, so validate it under the actual workload.
Do not copy the GStreamer network-streaming example’s key-int-max=15 as a YouTube recommendation. That example demonstrates an encoder and RTP payloading pattern; it is not YouTube’s RTMP ingest guidance or a 1080p keyframe target.

Common problems and fixes
- Stream health reports insufficient bitrate or instability: Check that the configured bitrate is appropriate for the selected frame rate and that the real uplink can sustain it, including audio and transport overhead. Test during representative network conditions.
- The stream stutters or the pipeline stalls: Determine whether x264enc is buffering more frames than the queues in other branches can absorb. Test queue adjustments or a multiqueue; consider zerolatency only if its quality trade-off is acceptable.
- Keyframes are too far apart: Confirm
key-int-maxis in frames, not seconds. At 30 fps, 60 frames span two seconds; at 60 fps, 120 frames span two seconds. - Encoding cannot sustain the selected frame rate: Try a faster available preset and repeat a full-duration test at target resolution and frame rate. Lowering the output frame rate or resolution may be necessary if the machine cannot keep pace.
- Settings seem to have no expected effect: Inspect the installed plugin with
gst-inspect-1.0 x264encand review preset, tune, and rate-control interactions. The property values alone do not prove that the negotiated pipeline or final stream has the intended behavior.
Copyright and YouTube live checks
Technical encoder compliance does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast a prerecorded video. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, game footage, and other material it contains, and follow YouTube’s current live-stream rules. A stream that encodes correctly can still be interrupted or restricted for rights or policy reasons.
