Run FFmpeg as the Docker container’s foreground process, then give the container a restart policy so Docker can relaunch it after qualifying exits. For a YouTube stream, FFmpeg reads your media and sends it to YouTube Live using the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Docker restart policies and FFmpeg’s own output-recovery options address different failures; neither guarantees an uninterrupted stream or fixes a persistent cause.
How the stream and recovery layers fit together
The path is media input → FFmpeg → YouTube Live ingestion. Docker packages and runs FFmpeg; it does not encode the media or repair the stream. Keep the distinctions clear:
| Mechanism | Failure layer and trigger | What it can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docker restart policy | The container exits, or the Docker daemon restarts, depending on the selected policy. | Start the container again according to that policy. | Fix invalid media, credentials, incompatible codecs, or a continuing network failure. |
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | An output failure, such as a temporary network interruption, when the relevant FIFO muxer options are configured. | Attempt to recover output within the running FFmpeg process. | Guarantee recovery from permanent errors or replace Docker’s handling of a process/container exit. |
A container that keeps restarting may be repeatedly encountering the same unresolved problem. Check its exit status and logs instead of treating restarts as proof that the stream is healthy.
Prepare the input and YouTube ingest details
Make the media accessible to the container
Choose a local media file or another source FFmpeg supports. If the file is on the host, configure a bind mount so the container can read it, and use the path as it appears inside the container. Confirm the file exists at that path and that the container process has permission to read it.

Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the ingest details for the stream.
- If YouTube initially displays an ordinary RTMP URL, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL instead. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP; FFmpeg defines RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Use the stream key associated with that YouTube stream. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in examples, commit it to a public repository, or expose it in logs or screenshots.
Use the exact URL and key provided for your stream; do not assume an endpoint or key from an old example is current.
Choose FFmpeg’s media handling and output settings
There is no single FFmpeg command that suits every input. Whether you can copy streams or need decoding, filtering, and re-encoding depends on the input’s audio and video streams, the desired output, and the encoders available in your FFmpeg build. Check the installed build’s options and verify the input before relying on it. Keep the stream key out of public command examples and shared logs.

Match the output to YouTube’s published guidance
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds—not over 4 seconds. The following figures are YouTube’s published recommendations and minimums, not independent performance guarantees. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table and verify that your encoder supports the selected codec.
| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These examples are not a substitute for the full table: select the row for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. Match the output to the source rather than trying to create detail the source does not contain, and ensure the host’s upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate.

Keep FFmpeg in the foreground and configure Docker restarts
Docker can only respond meaningfully to the container’s main process. Run FFmpeg as that foreground process rather than putting it in the background or hiding it behind a process manager inside the container. That lets Docker observe FFmpeg’s exit status. Docker recommends restart policies rather than process managers to start containers; see Docker’s automatic-start documentation.
Select a restart policy deliberately
no: do not automatically restart the container.on-failure[:max-retries]: restart after a failure exit; an optional retry limit bounds the attempts.always: restart the container after it exits, subject to Docker’s policy behavior.unless-stopped: restart it unless it was explicitly stopped.
Choose based on whether a manual stop should remain stopped and whether repeated retries are appropriate for your operation. A policy relaunches a process after qualifying exits; it does not determine whether the underlying stream problem has been solved.

Apply configuration changes correctly in Compose
Set the restart policy in the Compose service definition. Running docker compose restart restarts existing services but does not apply edits made to the Compose configuration. Use the appropriate Compose operation to apply configuration changes; consult the Compose restart reference for the command’s behavior.
Consider FFmpeg output recovery separately
For temporary output interruptions, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has options including attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and packet-overflow settings. The FFmpeg documentation’s RTMP example illustrates attempting recovery and continuing at real-time rate after a temporary network failure; it is an example to adapt, not a command to copy blindly to every input or RTMPS endpoint. See FFmpeg’s documentation and its protocol documentation.

Recovery may not help with a permanent output error. Overflow handling can also involve dropping packets if configured that way. Decide whether these trade-offs suit the source and failure mode, and test the result. FIFO recovery operates within FFmpeg; Docker’s restart policy handles qualifying container exits.
Test the feed and monitor it during the stream
- Start the container and verify from its logs that FFmpeg can open the input and connect to the intended YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that it receives the feed. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
- Inspect container and FFmpeg logs if the stream fails or the container restarts. Look for input-path or permission errors, rejected credentials, unsupported media or encoder settings, and output connection errors.
- Test the recovery behavior you intend to rely on, including how a manual stop behaves under the selected restart policy. Do this before depending on the setup for a long stream.
Repeated container restarts with no log review can conceal an unresolved input, authentication, or network problem. YouTube’s stream health guidance and encoder recommendations help distinguish configuration problems from a healthy incoming feed.
Common problems and fixes
- The container exits immediately: Check the container logs and exit status. Confirm FFmpeg is the foreground process, the input path exists inside the container, and the input can be opened.
- Docker restarts the container but the stream still does not recover: The policy only relaunches the container after qualifying exits. Inspect the new FFmpeg logs for the continuing cause; a restart cannot correct bad media, a wrong key, or a persistent network failure.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify that you copied the RTMPS URL and the correct stream key from Live Control Room, and check FFmpeg’s output connection messages. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- The output is rejected or unhealthy: Check codec support, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings table. Also confirm the host can sustain the required upload bitrate.
- A brief network drop breaks output: Docker’s restart policy is not in-process network recovery. Evaluate FFmpeg FIFO recovery options for the actual output and test whether they help with the interruption you experience.
- Compose changes seem ignored after restart:
docker compose restartdoes not apply changed Compose configuration. Put the policy in the service definition and use the appropriate operation to apply the edit.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain an always-on Docker host, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera, and it is for YouTube only. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
