If a video-file source is black in XSplit Broadcaster, open Tools > Settings > Advanced and change Prefer CPU for video processing to Prefer GPU for video processing. If the source is still black, uncheck Use Media Foundation Engine for video playback if that option is available. XSplit documents the second change as dependent on selecting Prefer GPU first.
Try XSplit’s documented fixes in order
- Confirm the source type. In the scene where the problem occurs, check that the file is added as a video source. If needed, use Add Source > Video File, then inspect the source’s properties and playback controls. See XSplit’s Image, Video, and Audio Source guide.
- Switch video processing to the GPU. Go to Tools > Settings > Advanced, then select Prefer GPU for video processing. This is XSplit’s first documented recommendation for a source that displays black. The relevant guidance is in Fixing Sources That Only Display Black.
- Try the alternate playback engine setting if needed. If the source remains black, look for Use Media Foundation Engine for video playback and uncheck it. XSplit says this option is available only when Prefer GPU for video processing is selected.
- Check the source in Broadcaster before testing the stream. Verify whether the video appears in the scene preview. XSplit’s workflow treats source setup separately from choosing a streaming channel and starting the output; see Getting Started with XSplit Broadcaster.
What the settings change—and what it does not prove
XSplit describes Prefer GPU as allowing Broadcaster to use GPU functions for accelerated decoding and other processing. Its settings guide says the default mode balances CPU and GPU load; Prefer CPU is recommended when reducing GPU load matters, such as when playing PC games on the same computer. Switching to Prefer GPU is therefore a troubleshooting choice with a possible resource tradeoff, not a guarantee of better performance in every setup. See XSplit’s Settings guide.
The same guide describes the Media Foundation option as enabling Microsoft’s MF engine for supported MP4, WMV, AVI, and ASF playback, with DXVA2 hardware acceleration. This is not a promise that every file in those containers will play correctly: a filename extension alone does not establish which encoding is inside the file or explain why a source is black.
XSplit’s source guide lists formats including PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP, TIFF, MP4, FLV, WEBM, and MP3, but that list is not a universal compatibility guarantee for every codec or file. XSplit’s black-source article addresses source display settings; it does not identify YouTube as the cause. First establish whether the video appears in Broadcaster’s scene preview before diagnosing the delivered stream.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the video is still black
The official guidance does not establish a single cause for every file or computer. To make the unresolved problem easier to diagnose, note the Broadcaster version, file container and encoding details, which processing mode is selected, and whether the source is black in the preview or only in the delivered stream. Then contact XSplit Support with those details.
- The Media Foundation option is missing: XSplit documents it as available only after selecting Prefer GPU. Interface availability can also vary by Broadcaster version and configuration.
- The preview works but the YouTube stream is black: The source-display recommendation may not address an output-specific problem. Keep the distinction clear when troubleshooting and report where the image disappears.
- Changing processing mode affects game performance: Prefer GPU may shift work to the GPU. If you play a demanding game on the same machine, account for the GPU-load tradeoff described in XSplit’s settings guide.
- The file still fails after both changes: The documented steps do not identify a universal codec, driver, or hardware fix. Avoid assuming that buying a GPU, codec utility, capture card, or cable will solve this symptom; the cited guidance does not recommend those purchases.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than an XSplit setting fix: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
