To stream a prerecorded video in portrait format, add the file to XSplit Broadcaster as a Video File source, set a portrait stage, compose the preview, then send it to YouTube using XSplit’s YouTube Live output. A local video file does not require a webcam or capture card.
Before you start
- Have the video file saved on the computer running XSplit. XSplit documents common image, video, and audio formats including MP4 and WEBM; whether a particular file plays can depend on the file itself and your installed version. See XSplit’s Image, Video, and Audio Source guide.
- Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel before configuring the output. XSplit’s YouTube Live guide says the channel should be verified and free of a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; it also says first-time approval can take up to 24 hours. These are XSplit’s guidance, not a guarantee of YouTube’s current eligibility rules, so check the channel’s current eligibility screen.
- Install a Broadcaster version whose YouTube output supports vertical streaming if you want to use XSplit’s direct vertical-output option. XSplit documented that support in version 4.5.2412.0304 in its December 2024 release notes.
Add the prerecorded video to XSplit
- Open the scene you want to broadcast.
- Choose Add Source > Video File, then select the local video. Do not choose a camera or capture-card source for a file already on the computer.
- Use the video source’s playback controls to set the behavior you want. Check the preview and confirm the file plays as expected before going live.
XSplit’s Camera/Capture Card source is intended for compatible external video devices. It is not needed for local-file playback.
Make the canvas vertical
- Open the stage controls and set a custom portrait resolution. For vertical video, the aspect ratio is 9:16; select dimensions supported by your system and YouTube setup rather than assuming one resolution fits every machine or account.
- Resize, move, or crop the Video File source on the stage. XSplit’s stage guide explains custom stage resolution and source layout controls; streaming and recording use the stage resolution by default.
- Inspect the entire preview. A landscape file on a portrait canvas may have to be cropped, resized with empty space around it, or reframed. Choose deliberately: cropping can remove content near the sides, while fitting the full width can leave unused space above and below.
XSplit’s December 2024 release notes say its YouTube Live output added vertical streaming support and describe 9:16 content as able to appear in the YouTube Shorts feed. Aspect ratio alone does not guarantee feed placement.
Configure YouTube Live and start the stream
- In XSplit, open Broadcast and set up or select the YouTube output. Authorize the YouTube account when prompted.
- Choose whether to start an immediate broadcast or select a scheduled YouTube event. XSplit’s scheduled-stream guide describes creating the event in YouTube Studio first, then selecting it from XSplit’s Live Event list.
- Enter the event details and review the settings XSplit offers, including title, description, tags, category, privacy, latency, DVR, backup server, and Manual Transition. Set privacy intentionally before starting.
- Check the preview and output status before sharing the link or promoting the broadcast.
Scheduled event: decide on Manual Transition
If Manual Transition is checked, starting the XSplit output does not by itself complete the transition to live: click Go Live in YouTube Studio when ready. If it is unchecked, XSplit’s guide says starting the broadcast automatically starts the event on YouTube. Confirm the event’s status in YouTube Studio either way.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Optional: use Custom RTMP instead
If you do not want to use XSplit’s direct YouTube output, YouTube Studio provides a stream URL and key that can be entered through Broadcast > Set up new output > Custom RTMP. XSplit documents this route in its YouTube Live Stream Credentials guide. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in screenshots.
When a second layout may help
XSplit’s Multi Output guide describes separate canvases that share scenes and sources while allowing independent visibility and layout. That can help when you need portrait and landscape compositions, but the reviewed guide labels Multi Output mode and its canvas controls beta. Check the behavior and availability in your installed version before relying on it: Get Started with Multi Output Mode.

Troubleshooting
- The file does not appear or play: confirm you added it with Add Source > Video File, that the file is accessible locally, and that its format works with your installed XSplit version. Try another supported common format if needed.
- The video is cropped or surrounded by empty space: compare the source’s shape with the portrait stage, then resize, crop, or reposition it and inspect the preview. There is no single layout that preserves every landscape video’s full frame on a portrait canvas.
- You cannot start the YouTube output: confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and review YouTube’s current eligibility status. XSplit’s own setup guidance notes that first-time approval may take up to 24 hours.
- The scheduled event remains waiting: check whether Manual Transition is enabled. If it is, use YouTube Studio’s Go Live action after starting XSplit.
- The stream key may have been exposed: replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the credential in XSplit. Do not leave a visible key in a recording or screenshot.
