Each points to a different failure point, and PRISM’s official guidance does not identify one fix that resolves every case.
Find where the black screen starts
Check the source and each stage in order. If the video is already black in its original browser player, troubleshoot that player first. If it looks normal there but is black in PRISM, focus on the PRISM source or capture method. If PRISM’s preview looks right but the live output does not, the available guidance does not establish a single PRISM setting as the cause; isolate the issue by checking the output in YouTube and testing the source again.
- Black in the original player: investigate browser playback rendering.
- Black in PRISM preview: identify whether the source is a browser source, a captured window or display, a local media file, or a capture device.
- Black only in the YouTube live player: distinguish a YouTube player-rendering problem from a black image in the broadcast itself.
If you added the video as a PRISM browser source
PRISM cautions that videos and sounds on some webpages may not play normally because of technical constraints. A browser source that loads a page successfully therefore may still fail to show or play its video correctly. PRISM’s browser-source guide and its performance guidance offer checks, not a guaranteed fix for every site or video.
- In PRISM, temporarily remove or hide other browser sources and retest the affected one. PRISM says browser sources can add GPU load and recommends minimizing them where possible.
- Check PRISM’s performance settings for Use hardware acceleration when available and test with it enabled. The behavior can depend on the page and system; if the result changes, note which setting state works for your setup.
- If the page still displays black, test another source type only when you have a lawful local copy of the video. A webpage’s failure in PRISM does not establish that the video is available to rebroadcast or that you have permission to do so.
PRISM’s FAQ puts the limitation plainly: “Please note that videos and sounds from some webpages may not play normal due to technical constraints.” The FAQ does not name a universal setting that removes those constraints. PRISM Live Studio FAQ

If PRISM captures a browser window or desktop
Window Capture and Display Capture are different from adding a browser source: PRISM is capturing what another app or the desktop renders. On Windows, graphics-card assignment and capture method can affect what is captured. Follow PRISM’s screen-capture guide, checking the relevant branch below.
Window Capture on Windows
- Check that PRISM and the monitor or target application are assigned to the same graphics card. If they use different GPUs, capture may not behave as expected.
- For Window Capture on Windows 10 version 1903 or later, PRISM recommends Windows Graphics Capture. Select it as the capture method where the current PRISM interface offers that option.
Display Capture
Display Capture has capture-method settings. PRISM’s guide recommends DXGI Desktop Duplication for optimal performance in the documented context. Treat this as a capture-method check, not proof that it fixes every black screen.

If the video is a local file
PRISM’s Media Source plays a file stored on your device. If you have the right to use that file in your stream, try Media Source rather than capturing a webpage. PRISM documents the source in its Media Source guide.
- Add the local file using PRISM’s Media Source option and confirm that the file plays in the PRISM preview.
- Where practical, make the media resolution match the stream’s transmission resolution. PRISM notes that larger media files use more CPU.
- If you test hardware decoding, monitor the result: PRISM notes that hardware decoding can increase GPU usage.
Changing source type can help isolate whether the issue is specific to webpage playback, but it does not grant permission to use copyrighted material. Check rights for both the video and its audio before broadcasting.

If YouTube’s own player is black or green
When the video is already black or green in YouTube’s player before PRISM captures it, troubleshoot that browser player separately. YouTube’s green screen in video player help advises trying browser hardware-acceleration settings. That guidance concerns YouTube player rendering; it is not evidence that changing hardware acceleration will fix a black PRISM livestream.
If the source is a camera or capture card
These checks apply to a video capture device, not to a webpage video. PRISM’s video capture device guide supports checking the device connection and configuration:

- Reconnect the cable and confirm that the device is recognized by the computer.
- Check that the required device drivers are installed and current.
- Close other apps that may already be using the camera or capture device.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate supported by the device.
Check system compatibility after source-specific tests
If the source and capture settings are not the issue, compare the PC with PRISM’s stated requirements. Its FAQ says the PC app supports DirectX 11 and lists an NVIDIA GTX 960 or equivalent as the minimum graphics requirement. This is a general minimum requirement, not evidence that upgrading a graphics card will fix this particular symptom. PRISM Live Studio FAQ
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Browser source: minimize other browser sources and test PRISM’s “Use hardware acceleration when available” setting.
- Window or display capture: check shared GPU assignment; for supported Windows Window Capture, test Windows Graphics Capture; for Display Capture, check the documented DXGI Desktop Duplication option.
- Local file: test it through Media Source, match resolutions where practical, and watch CPU and GPU load.
- YouTube player itself: follow YouTube’s player-rendering guidance, without assuming it diagnoses PRISM’s outgoing stream.
- Camera or capture card: check connection, recognition, drivers, app conflicts, and supported resolution and frame rate.
