Use whichever connection at your streaming location can sustain your chosen upload bitrate with the fewest interruptions. Wi-Fi is not automatically more stable than a mobile hotspot, and a strong cellular signal does not guarantee steady upload. Test both where you plan to stream, compare upload performance, and leave roughly 20% headroom above your stream’s total bitrate, as YouTube recommends.
How to choose between Wi-Fi and a mobile hotspot
Run an upload-speed test on each connection at the place you will stream. Judge the sustained upload and stability, not the connection’s name or download speed: YouTube notes that outbound bandwidth is often lower than inbound bandwidth, and other people sharing a network can reduce the bandwidth available to you. A fast plan alone does not guarantee a reliable stream.

Neither option is a universal winner. Repeat the test at the time you expect to stream, since signal and network load can change.
Set a bitrate your connection can actually sustain
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, a stream using 5 Mbps needs about 6 Mbps of available upload to retain that margin. This is a planning guide, not a guarantee: interruptions can still affect the stream.

YouTube’s H.264 encoder guidance includes these examples. They are platform encoder recommendations, not confirmed Streamlabs Mobile presets:

Streamlabs Mobile exposes controls for output resolution, frame rate, and maximum bitrate. Choose settings available in the app that your tested connection can maintain; do not assume YouTube’s encoder table describes a Streamlabs preset. YouTube’s advice is to choose a quality that gives you a reliable stream for your internet connection. Test before going public
- At your planned streaming location, test Wi-Fi and cellular separately. Check upload performance and whether it stays steady, including at the time you expect to go live.
- In Streamlabs Mobile, set the output resolution, frame rate, and maximum bitrate. Use settings that fit your tested upload with headroom; the available controls may depend on the app version and device.
- Start an unlisted YouTube test stream. Speak, move, and use your real setup so the test reflects the stream you intend to make.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages. If the test is unstable, lower the output demand or switch to the connection that performed better, then test again.

When Streamlabs Network Boost may help
Streamlabs describes Network Boost as a way to draw on multiple available connections, such as Wi-Fi, cellular data, or a hotspot. Its current guide says a basic setup does not require dedicated hardware, but requires an active Streamlabs Ultra or Ultra+ subscription. At launch, the primary streaming device had to be iOS; a secondary device could be iOS or Android. More advanced setups, such as using a router or three or more devices or connections, use Streamlabs Controller to manage relay devices. Availability and requirements can change, so check the current Network Boost guide before relying on the feature.

Do not confuse LAN Streaming with an internet uplink
Streamlabs Mobile LAN Streaming sends a phone camera or screen source to Streamlabs Desktop over a local network. The phone and computer must share the same Ethernet or Wi-Fi network, and Streamlabs says this feature does not work over the phone’s cellular connection. That limitation is specific to LAN Streaming; it does not mean a phone cannot stream directly to YouTube over cellular internet. See the Mobile LAN Streaming source guide.
Troubleshoot an unstable mobile stream
- Upload is below the bitrate target: Reduce the stream’s bitrate or choose a lower-demand resolution or frame rate in Streamlabs Mobile, then run another unlisted test.
- Upload speed looks adequate but the stream still drops: Retest at the actual location and time. Network congestion, changing cellular signal, or interruptions can undermine a speed-test result.
- Wi-Fi slows when others are online: Test when the network is under typical load; shared bandwidth can reduce what is available to the stream.
- Cellular performance varies: Move to a location with stronger signal and test again. Check your data and hotspot allowance before a long stream.
- You are trying to use LAN Streaming on cellular: Connect the phone and computer to the same supported Ethernet or Wi-Fi LAN instead. For a direct YouTube stream from the phone, use an internet connection and test it separately.
- You want to combine connections: Check whether Network Boost is available for your device and subscription, and confirm its current requirements in Streamlabs’ guide.
