If Astra keeps restarting a video instead of moving to the next file, the symptom alone does not identify one cause. First confirm that you are using Astra on a supported Fire TV device, then check whether a movie exits before it ends or an episode fails to advance. For episodes, the key setting is Settings > Playback > Next episode autoplay; for a long video that returns to the menu, updating Astra may address a documented issue.
First, check that Astra matches your Fire TV
Astra is a Jellyfin client for supported Fire TV devices running Vega OS. Its official help currently covers Astra 1.4.0 and Vega OS 1.2 or later. Older Android-based Fire TV devices should use the regular Jellyfin app instead. Check Settings > About for Astra’s version and build, and confirm the device’s operating system before troubleshooting playback settings. Astra’s project repository and official help document the supported scope.
If you are on an earlier Astra version, update first. Astra’s help notes that an Appstore release can take a day or two to reach a device; if an update is not yet available, that delay may explain why your device still shows an older build.
Identify when the restart happens
Notice whether the current file reaches its end, stops partway through and returns to the menu, or buffers and stutters before restarting. These patterns point to different checks; the available Astra documentation does not establish one universal cause or rank the possible causes by likelihood.

If an episode will not advance
- Open Settings > Playback > Next episode autoplay.
- Enable autoplay if it is off, then adjust the countdown to suit how quickly you want the next episode to start.
- Play an episode through to its end and check whether Astra advances after the countdown.
The setting applies to episodes, not movies. Astra’s help says: “Next episode autoplay — with an adjustable countdown. Astra stops to ask after three episodes in a row rather than running all night on its own.” If the first episode still restarts rather than advancing, record whether the file actually finished and whether the countdown appeared; those details help distinguish an episode-boundary issue from playback interruption.
If a long video returns to the menu before it ends
Update Astra to version 1.4.0 or later if your device is still on an earlier build. Astra’s help identifies “A long movie stops partway through and dumps me back to the menu” as an issue fixed in 1.4.0. The project repository describes it as a Fire TV lifecycle/resource issue during prolonged playback—not as a general explanation for a restart at every episode boundary.

The repository release history dates Astra 1.4.0 to September 8, 2026. It describes one reported title stopping at 61 minutes and a 130-minute physical-device acceptance playback for the fix. Those are project-specific incident and validation details, not a general failure rate or a guarantee for every Fire TV, file, or server.
If playback buffers or stutters
Use these checks when buffering or stuttering accompanies the restart. They help investigate streaming performance; Astra’s help does not say they cure every restart symptom.

- While playing the affected file, open Stats for Nerds. Note the codecs, audio track, bitrate, buffer, and dropped frames.
- Go to Settings > Playback > Server transcoding and confirm that the selection reflects what your Jellyfin server can do.
- Run Test server connection and note its bitrate recommendation.
- Change Max streaming bitrate only if the observed symptoms and connection test support doing so; lowering it indiscriminately may change stream quality without resolving an unrelated app or episode-advance problem.

Collect useful evidence if it still happens
If the issue persists after the relevant checks, gather information from the same failed session before reporting it. This helps separate an Astra playback problem from a file, server, or connection issue.

- Astra version and build, from Settings > About, and the Fire TV model and Vega OS version.
- Jellyfin server version and whether server transcoding is enabled; include the transcoding hardware if known.
- The affected file’s container, video and audio codecs, and resolution.
- Whether the same file plays in another Jellyfin client.
- Whether the device connects over a local network, the internet, or a VPN.
- The Jellyfin server log covering the failed playback session, plus whether the file stopped mid-playback or failed at an episode boundary.
Astra’s project and help documentation are product sources, not independent reproduction tests. Without your device, build, file, server, and session evidence, the exact cause cannot be determined from the restart symptom alone.

Do not treat subtitles as the likely cause unless the problem began after selecting a subtitle or appears alongside a reload or buffering symptom. Astra 1.4.0 draws ordinary text subtitles itself; picture-based subtitles and heavily styled ASS/SSA subtitles may require server burn-in and rebuilding the stream. If the timing points to subtitle selection, include the subtitle format and whether it was enabled in your diagnostic report. See Astra’s official help for its subtitle guidance.
