For a YouTube-only bhajan channel, start with OBS sending directly to YouTube. OBS encodes and broadcasts your video; Owncast is a separate self-hosted streaming site and server that receives a broadcast and serves it to its own audience. Choose Owncast only if you specifically want to operate that separate site and its supporting infrastructure. For a continuous stream without a computer running at home, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is another option.
Owncast and OBS do different jobs
OBS Studio is broadcasting and encoder software: it takes your media, encodes it, and sends the outgoing stream to a destination such as YouTube. Owncast is a self-hosted live-streaming and chat server. An encoder such as OBS sends a stream to Owncast, which presents it on an operator-controlled site.
That distinction matters because Owncast is not an alternative encoder that you must use instead of OBS. In an OBS-to-Owncast setup, OBS still does the encoding. If YouTube is the only audience destination, sending OBS directly to YouTube avoids adding a server that you would need to install, secure, run, and maintain.
Which setup fits a 24/7 bhajan channel?
| Decision | OBS directly to YouTube | OBS to Owncast |
|---|---|---|
| Audience destination | Your YouTube channel and watch page. | Your Owncast site. YouTube needs its own destination workflow if you also want viewers there. |
| What you operate | The encoding device, reliable upload connection, OBS, and YouTube Live Control Room. | All the OBS and connection tasks, plus the Owncast server: installation, security, updates, network access, and stream credentials. |
| Cost planning | Encoding device and upload connection; a specific cost is not established here. | Server, outbound bandwidth, possible transcoding, and optional object storage. The right capacity and cost depend on configuration and audience. |
| Best fit | You want the audience on YouTube and prefer fewer systems to operate. | You want a separately controlled streaming site and are prepared to administer a server. |
Owncast documentation describes its outbound bandwidth as dependent on viewer count and stream quality; transcoding affects CPU use, and object storage can offload viewer-facing delivery bandwidth. A single server size or price is not a universal answer. The available sources do not establish a specific setup that automatically relays Owncast to YouTube, or that one OBS output reaches both destinations without additional configuration or tooling.

Set up OBS directly to YouTube
- Enable live streaming on your channel. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation flow and follow YouTube’s prompts. A channel’s first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned launch.
- Create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Select the encoder workflow, then copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into OBS. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or a custom destination as appropriate, and enter the YouTube server details and stream key. In Settings > Output and Settings > Video, choose settings supported by your footage, connection, and YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Use YouTube’s encoding guidance as the starting point. YouTube recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS. It also recommends leaving upload headroom rather than running the connection at its full measured capacity. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings at YouTube’s live encoder settings; do not treat one bitrate as appropriate for every resolution, frame rate, or connection.
- Test before making the stream continuous. Start a private or unlisted test if suitable, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and listen for audio issues. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring audio/video quality. If you use a backup encoder, test the failover rather than assuming it will work.
If you choose Owncast, plan to operate another system
- Install Owncast on a server you can administer. Follow the current instructions at Owncast’s installation guide. Keep the service running persistently, restrict access to administration, and change default credentials immediately.
- Set up its broadcast credentials. Owncast’s manual setup uses an RTMP endpoint ending in
/liveand a stream key. In OBS, configure Owncast as the destination with that endpoint and key, rather than entering YouTube’s details. - Check compatibility and server capacity. Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio. Its resource guidance explains why expected viewers, quality options, transcoding, and delivery architecture affect requirements; consult Owncast’s resource guidance for your configuration rather than assuming a fixed capacity.
- Decide separately whether YouTube is also a destination. Owncast and YouTube are distinct targets. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for YouTube’s own server URL and stream key; do not assume Owncast automatically forwards a feed or that a single OBS output serves both. Any multi-destination arrangement needs its own configuration and testing.
Plan the 24/7 schedule, archive, and recovery
A continuous broadcast is not necessarily one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; longer streams may not be captured at all. Plan how to preserve the source recordings and, if a replay matters, use a recording and archive workflow you have tested. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. For a long-running stream, also monitor the actual destination and have a recovery plan for interruptions; a test of backup-encoder failover is useful only if that backup is actually configured.
For bhajan playlists, check that files play in the intended order, that audio levels are consistent, and that the ending returns cleanly to the beginning. These are practical checks for the media you upload or schedule, not a substitute for testing the broadcast path and stream health.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube requires creators to have the necessary rights to what they stream, including music rights. Its live streams are scanned for third-party matches, and a stream may be interrupted if a match is detected. YouTube also notes that even licensed music may require the rightsholder to allowlist the channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
A bhajan’s devotional character, traditional roots, or age alone does not establish that a particular recording or performance is cleared. The composition, arrangement, recording, and performance can involve different rights. Use recordings and performances you made with the relevant rights, commissioned material with written permissions, or material whose public-domain status and recording rights you have verified. Keep permission records, and ask rightsholders about Content ID allowlisting where needed. YouTube’s terms place responsibility for required rights on the content provider: YouTube Terms of Service. The platform guidance does not determine which India-specific permissions apply to a particular song or arrangement; seek qualified India-specific advice if the rights position is unclear.
