Owncast can host your own live video site on an Indian VPS, but it does not automatically relay an incoming stream to YouTube. For both destinations, send the broadcast to Owncast and configure a separate YouTube output through broadcasting software or a relay that supports both. A continuously running setup also needs enough upload capacity at the source, outbound bandwidth at the VPS, secure credentials, and a tested restart path.
What Owncast does—and what it does not do
Owncast is a self-hosted live video and chat server. A broadcaster sends it an RTMP stream; Owncast processes the stream for playback by viewers on its own site using HLS. Owncast’s documentation describes it as an RTMP destination and HLS delivery server, not as an automatic YouTube relay. See the Owncast broadcasting guide and official documentation.
If you want the same program on Owncast and YouTube, your encoder or a separate relay must publish to both destinations. Confirm that the software supports simultaneous outputs and reconnects; configuring Owncast alone does not create a YouTube stream.
Choose an Indian VPS carefully
An India-based server may reduce network distance for some broadcasters or viewers, but location alone does not establish that a VPS can sustain a 24/7 video stream. No particular provider, Indian region, plan, transfer allowance, or service level is verified here. Owncast’s provider page lists pre-installed options, but that list is not proof of current India-region availability or suitable network terms: Owncast provider options.

Before ordering, verify the following directly with the provider:
- Whether the selected plan is actually hosted in India and provides a public IPv4 address.
- Whether inbound TCP ports needed for the web interface and RTMP are allowed, either directly or through firewall configuration.
- How sustained outbound throughput is handled, what monthly transfer is included, and what overage or throttling applies.
- CPU capacity for any transcoding, storage and backup options, and whether continuous video traffic is permitted.
- Latency and delivery costs relative to your broadcaster and intended audience, including viewers outside India.
Install Owncast and secure its first run
Owncast’s official installation options include a quick installer, manual release installation, containers, and hosting-provider images. The quick installer can download FFmpeg if it is missing. Owncast advises against running a remote installer as root and recommends inspecting remote scripts before executing them. Manual installation requires FFmpeg; follow the current instructions for the method you choose at Owncast’s installation documentation.
- Prepare the host. Use a supported Linux environment and configure both the VPS provider’s firewall and the host firewall deliberately.
- Install Owncast. Follow the official steps for the selected installation method, including FFmpeg where required.
- Expose only the necessary services. The documented default web interface port is TCP 8080 and RTMP ingest is TCP 1935. A reverse proxy or other network design may change which ports need to be public. Do not open services indiscriminately.
- Sign in to the admin interface. Open
http://your-server:8080/adminor the appropriate hostname and proxy URL. The documented default username isadmin; the default admin password and stream key are eachabc123. - Change both credentials immediately. The admin password and stream key are separate credentials, even though their defaults match. Use unique values, store them securely, and never publish the stream key.
- Configure startup and recovery. Use Owncast’s official system-service instructions so the service starts after a host reboot. Confirm the service state and logs using the method appropriate to your installation.
Connect OBS or another RTMP broadcaster
Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default. The usual destination has the /live path, with the stream key entered separately in the encoder. Replace the example host with your own hostname and use the port actually configured for your deployment.

- In Owncast, find the current stream key in the admin settings and copy it without sharing it.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose a custom service, and enter
rtmp://yourserver:1935/liveas the server. Put the Owncast stream key in the separate key field. Owncast’s OBS steps are in its broadcasting documentation. - If your broadcasting application accepts only one destination field, append the key to the path in the format the application expects. Avoid exposing the resulting URL in screenshots, logs, or public configuration.
- Start the broadcast and check Owncast’s admin interface and public playback page. Confirm both video and audio before enabling unattended operation.
Owncast says software capable of sending RTMP is generally compatible, while noting it has not tested every application. For broad compatibility, its guidance recommends H.264 video and AAC audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and a source quality the server can handle. Its examples—1080p30 at 4500 kbps and 720p30 at 3000 kbps—are starting points, not guarantees for a particular VPS or network. See Owncast’s encoder guidance.
Send a separate output to YouTube
Configure YouTube as another destination in your broadcasting software, if it supports simultaneous outputs, or use a relay that explicitly supports the exact Owncast-plus-YouTube route. Do not assume that entering an Owncast server URL forwards the stream to YouTube. Test each destination independently, including what happens if either destination disconnects.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency (no more than four seconds). Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s current table rather than applying one bitrate to every output: YouTube Live encoder settings. YouTube’s ingest settings and Owncast’s recommendations are separate requirements to check for their respective destinations.

Plan for 24/7 capacity
Broadcaster upload to the VPS
The encoder’s sustained upload is a different requirement from the VPS’s delivery capacity. Owncast recommends allowing at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate for upload fluctuation and overhead. For example, its guidance says a 5000 kbps stream should have at least 7.5 Mbps of upload capacity. Check the actual sustained upload available to the encoder, not just the advertised maximum. VPS outbound bandwidth to Owncast viewers
Owncast’s approximate peak egress calculation is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. At 5000 kbps and 25 simultaneous viewers on one quality, that is roughly 125 Mbps of sustained outbound throughput before protocol overhead and practical headroom. Total transferred data also accumulates with stream duration. Check the provider’s sustained throughput and transfer accounting, not only its advertised port speed. CPU demand depends on whether video is passed through or transcoded and how many output qualities are generated. Owncast’s rough planning guidance says one CPU core can often handle one transcoded output quality at 30 fps, with substantial variation by codec, bitrate, resolution, preset, and host. Treat that as an estimate to benchmark, not a guarantee. More viewers mainly raise delivery bandwidth; transcoding work is driven by output qualities.

Start with one output variant and add more only after the initial stream is healthy and the host has headroom. Multiple qualities can help viewers on slower connections but increase server work. Owncast also documents S3-compatible object storage as an option for moving video delivery away from the VPS; it brings a separate provider and configuration to manage. See Owncast capacity guidance.

“Continuous” requires more than a successful first launch. Owncast’s system service should start after a reboot, but the source encoder and the separate YouTube publishing path also need their own reconnect behavior. Before relying on the setup, verify these failure cases:
- Stop and restart the source broadcast; confirm Owncast accepts the new connection and playback resumes.
- Restart the VPS; confirm the Owncast service starts automatically and the broadcaster can reconnect.
- Test Owncast playback and YouTube live status separately; one destination can fail while the other continues.
- Check logs and monitoring for repeated disconnects, resource pressure, or firewall problems.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection for the source where practical; Owncast notes Wi-Fi can add latency and instability.

Can Owncast stream to YouTube by itself?
