Owncast can receive a live feed from OBS or another RTMP encoder, but it is not itself a YouTube destination or a documented Gurbani playlist scheduler. For a 24/7 YouTube stream, treat Owncast, YouTube Live, and the system that keeps your playlist playing as separate parts of the setup. For stereo devotional music, a practical starting point is AAC at 192 kbps on the Owncast input and AAC at 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps for a YouTube-oriented output; use a two-second keyframe interval and test the complete path before leaving it unattended.

How the pieces fit together

Owncast is a self-hosted livestreaming server. An encoder such as OBS sends video and audio to Owncast over RTMP; YouTube Live must be configured as a separate destination. The documentation reviewed for these steps does not establish a native Owncast-to-YouTube relay or a built-in playlist scheduler, so plan separately for getting the playlist into an encoder, sending it to YouTube, and recovering from interruptions.

  • Playlist source: The recording or sequence of recordings, with a playback process that can keep supplying audio and video.
  • Encoder: OBS or another RTMP-capable program that packages the source and sends it to the configured destination.
  • Owncast: Your server destination for an incoming stream, if you want to use Owncast in the workflow.
  • YouTube Live: A separately configured broadcast and ingest destination.

YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast scenario in which the broadcast continues while the video stream is not stopped. That describes a broadcast lifecycle, not how to make a playlist loop, restart a failed encoder, or guarantee uninterrupted playback. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation

Choose where Owncast and playback will run

Owncast can run on a self-managed Linux or macOS server, in a container, or through a hosting provider. Its installation documentation lists pre-installed provider options including Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud, and Vultr. The right choice depends on who will maintain the server, available processing and bandwidth, recurring hosting cost, and how you will detect and recover from encoder or network interruptions; the documentation does not establish minimum hardware specifications or comparative costs.

Owncast’s installation guide covers installation methods and running the service as a system service. Follow the instructions for your chosen operating system or host rather than assuming one command applies to every deployment. Owncast installation guide · Owncast hosting providers

Install and secure Owncast

  1. Install Owncast using the method documented for your server, container, or provider. Confirm the service starts and that you can reach its web interface.
  2. Open the administration area at /admin on your Owncast host.
  3. Change the sample admin password and stream key. The admin password and broadcast stream key are separate credentials. Do not reuse or publish either one. Owncast warns that its sample defaults are insecure.
  4. Review network exposure. Owncast documents web port 8080 and RTMP port 1935 as defaults; the server setup allows port configuration and multiple stream keys. Permit only the ports needed for your setup in the host firewall or security rules.

Owncast’s server setup documentation explains stream keys, ports, and server configuration. Optional S3-compatible storage offloading is a scaling configuration, not a requirement for a simple stream. Owncast server setup

Connect an encoder to Owncast

  1. In OBS or another RTMP-capable encoder, open the stream or broadcast settings and choose a custom RTMP server.
  2. Enter the Owncast host as the server destination, using the documented RTMP port 1935 and /live/ path. Enter the stream key separately if the encoder provides a distinct field. Use your actual host and key; do not copy a sample credential.
  3. Choose an input resolution and bitrate that your sending computer, internet connection, and Owncast host can sustain. Owncast cautions that unnecessarily high input quality consumes server resources.
  4. Start a short test stream and confirm that Owncast receives both picture and sound before configuring the YouTube output.

Set audio and video encoding deliberately

Owncast input profile

Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; Owncast specifically warns against leaving it on automatic. Its audio recommendations range from 96 kbps (low) through 320 kbps (highest), with 192 kbps labeled high. For a music-focused Gurbani stream, AAC at 192 kbps is a reasonable starting point, not a tested prescription for every source, encoder, or server. Listen to representative recordings and monitor server performance before relying on it continuously.

Owncast says audio passes through unchanged by default. If your workflow has an intermediate relay or a separate YouTube encoder output, verify whether audio is passed through or re-encoded rather than assuming the setting on one leg controls the other. Owncast audio and broadcasting settings

YouTube output profile

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For a typical stereo Gurbani output, use AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as the YouTube-oriented baseline. For 5.1 audio, its advanced guidance lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps.

For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are examples, not universal settings: the recommendation varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec. Consult the full current table for the selected output profile, use CBR, and test representative content. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream to YouTube’s servers. YouTube Live encoder settings

Destination or path Audio starting point Keyframe interval Video guidance
Owncast input AAC; 192 kbps is a source-based music-focused starting point 2 seconds H.264 recommended for compatibility; select a level the sender and server can handle
YouTube stereo output AAC, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Use CBR and the YouTube table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate

These are destination-specific recommendations, not a single combined requirement. When sending separate outputs, configure each one deliberately. When one stream passes through an intermediate system, check whether that system preserves or re-encodes the audio and video.

Plan playlist looping and continuous operation

The playlist must keep supplying audio and video, and the encoder process must stay connected. The Owncast pages cited here explain server setup and ingest, but do not document a built-in playlist scheduler. They also do not prescribe a specific playlist application, command, process supervisor, or recovery policy. Choose and test those pieces for your operating system and playback source before treating the stream as unattended.

  • Check that the encoder remains connected during a long test and that audio does not disappear between tracks.
  • Decide how the playback process and encoder will be restarted after a crash, host reboot, or network failure.
  • Monitor both Owncast and YouTube stream health; a broadcast that remains active does not by itself prove the source is still playing correctly.

A dedicated computer or a cloud host can run the server and playback workflow, but the available documentation does not give a minimum hardware specification or promise 24/7 continuity. The system’s actual reliability depends on the host, network, playback process, encoder, and recovery arrangements.

Configure YouTube Live separately

Create and configure the YouTube Live broadcast and its ingest stream separately from Owncast. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast resource, which carries event metadata and lifecycle, from the live stream resource, which carries encoder settings and transmission; the API documentation discusses binding them and persistent broadcast scenarios. If your chosen workflow does not send directly from an encoder to YouTube, establish how the stream moves from Owncast to YouTube—do not assume that configuring Owncast creates this connection automatically.

Before going live, confirm that the YouTube destination is correct, the broadcast is enabled, and the encoder profile matches the YouTube guidance. Run a representative test and check stream health in YouTube. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation · YouTube Live encoder settings

Clear rights for recordings and visuals

Check rights for the exact recording, performance, and accompanying visuals. A devotional or traditional composition does not, by itself, establish that a particular recording or arrangement is cleared for a livestream. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS cannot connect to Owncast Incorrect host, port, path, or stream key; firewall blocks RTMP Confirm the configured Owncast RTMP port and /live/ path, check the key, and verify the host’s firewall rules.
Owncast admin access fails Wrong web address or port, or changed credentials Check the host and configured web port; use the current admin password rather than the broadcast stream key.
Picture appears but audio is missing or distorted Wrong encoder audio source, incompatible codec, or an unintended pass-through/re-encode behavior Confirm AAC encoding, selected audio input, sample rate and bitrate for the destination, then listen to the stream at both Owncast and YouTube.
Stream works briefly, then stops Playback or encoder process ended, host/network interruption, or YouTube ingest issue Check playback continuity, encoder connection, host and network status, and YouTube stream health; implement and test a restart/recovery plan.
Playlist reaches the end and stays silent or stops Looping behavior is not configured in the playback system Test the playlist’s end-of-list behavior and configure looping in the chosen playback workflow; Owncast’s cited guides do not supply a scheduler.
Audio sounds degraded despite a higher bitrate Source quality, resampling, clipping, or encoding behavior may be the limiting factor Compare the original recording with the encoded output, check gain and sample-rate handling, and test a suitable bitrate without assuming higher is always better.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to a self-managed Owncast and encoder setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.

Every slot includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply on each plan; only the billing period changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for plan details, then start your free first day.
