For an existing container, you can normally set the policy without recreating it. If you do recreate it, preserve its configuration, data mounts, ports, and other runtime settings, and do not use --rm with --restart.
1. Confirm how Restreamer is running
These steps apply when Restreamer runs in a Docker container on your VPS. Restreamer’s Linux installation guide describes a Docker deployment for 64-bit Intel/AMD systems, including Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Debian. If you installed Restreamer another way, Docker restart policies will not control that installation.
Before changing anything, identify the current container and how it was created. Check its image, environment variables, port mappings, hardware-specific runtime options, and mounted directories. Keep the settings your deployment actually needs.
2. Set a restart policy on the existing container
For most VPS setups, unless-stopped is a practical choice: Docker will restart the container after a daemon restart unless you deliberately stopped it. Apply it with:

docker update --restart unless-stopped <container>Replace <container> with the container’s name or ID. To find those, run docker ps -a. Docker documents docker update --restart for changing a container’s restart policy without recreating it; a container created with --rm cannot be updated this way. See the Docker container run reference.
Choose between unless-stopped and always

These are Docker’s documented policy distinctions. A restart policy takes effect only after the container has started successfully and Docker has monitored it for at least 10 seconds. It does not repair a bad application configuration, restore a broken network connection, or ensure an upstream stream source is available.

3. If you recreate the container, preserve its configuration
Changing an existing container’s policy is usually simpler. If you need to recreate it—for example, to change other Docker settings—use the current deployment’s run configuration as your starting point. Do not copy a command blindly without accounting for your existing settings.
- Keep persistent state: Restreamer’s Linux guide shows host directories mounted into
/core/configand/core/data. Preserve the actual host paths used by your installation so configuration and data remain available. - Keep required ports: The guide’s common examples include web access on ports 8080 and 8181, RTMP on 1935, RTMPS on 1936, and SRT on UDP 6000. These are examples, not a requirement to use those exact host-side mappings. Keep the mappings your setup needs.
- Keep other runtime settings: Retain the image and tag, environment variables, and any hardware-specific options required by your setup.
- Add a restart policy and omit
--rm: Docker states that combining--restartwith--rmresults in an error.
Restreamer’s Quick Start example includes both flags; adjust that example rather than using it unchanged when setting a restart policy. Restreamer’s official recommendations favor its official Docker images to reduce dependency and operating-system mismatch issues. They do not establish one image tag as the best choice for every VPS.

4. Ensure Docker starts when the VPS boots
A container restart policy can only help if the Docker daemon is running. Docker says Debian and Ubuntu start Docker at boot by default. On other systemd-based Linux distributions, Docker’s post-installation steps give these commands:
sudo systemctl enable docker.service

sudo systemctl status docker.service5. Verify the policy and test after a reboot
Check the container’s configured restart policy and state with:
docker inspect -f '{{.HostConfig.RestartPolicy.Name}}' <container>
docker ps -aAfter rebooting the VPS, run docker ps to see whether Restreamer is running. If it is not, inspect its state and logs:

docker inspect <container>
docker logs <container>Docker also documents using container events and restart-count information to investigate restarts. A policy requests restarts under Docker’s documented conditions; it is not a health check or a guarantee that Restreamer can connect to every dependency.
Troubleshooting
The container does not return after reboot
- Confirm Docker starts at boot with
systemctl status docker.service; enable the Docker and containerd services where your distribution and installation require it. - Check the container’s policy with
docker inspect. If it is unset or incorrect, usedocker update --restart unless-stopped <container>or choosealwaysif its manual-stop behavior fits your needs. - If the container was removed, it cannot be restarted by policy. Check whether it was created with
--rmand whether the deployment process recreates it.
The container exits soon after starting
Inspect docker logs <container> and the container state before changing the policy. Docker’s restart policy does not take effect until the container has started successfully and been monitored for at least 10 seconds. A failing configuration or unavailable dependency needs its own fix.
Restreamer starts, but its settings or stream connectivity are missing
When recreating the container, verify that the original host-to-container mounts, port mappings, environment, and runtime options were retained. Restarting a container does not recreate omitted mounts or ports, and it cannot make an unavailable network or stream source available.
