If a YouTube broadcast through Restreamer keeps disconnecting, first identify where the break occurs: the video source, Datarhei Restreamer’s processing or network path, or YouTube’s ingest. Match timestamps and errors from both Restreamer and YouTube before changing settings; a bitrate display alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Here, “Restreamer” means Datarhei Restreamer, not Restream’s separate hosted multistreaming service. Their controls and continuity features are not interchangeable.
Find which part of the stream is disconnecting
A 24/7 setup has at least three relevant links: the source sending video to Restreamer, Restreamer’s processing and outgoing network connection, and YouTube’s ingestion of that output. Determine which link fails before treating every disconnect as a YouTube problem.
- Confirm the product and topology. Verify that you are using Datarhei Restreamer, then note what supplies its video and where it sends the stream. Restream’s hosted service is a different product.
- Record the failure window. Write down the date and time, including the time zone. Check whether the source is still arriving, whether Restreamer shows an outgoing bitrate, and what error appears in the relevant process details. A bitrate number is useful evidence, but it does not by itself establish that the stream is healthy end to end.
- Compare YouTube’s status at the same time. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the stream-health indicator and timestamped errors around the interruption. YouTube says its checks look for errors in the stream being sent to YouTube; an error that remains visible can help identify the next check. YouTube distinguishes critical errors from moderate ones, so use the actual message rather than assuming all warnings mean the broadcast has stopped.
- Use the matching evidence to narrow the fault. If the source stopped arriving, investigate the source first. If the source continues but Restreamer’s process reports an error or its outgoing bitrate disappears, investigate Restreamer and its network path. If Restreamer continues sending output while YouTube reports a timestamped ingest or format error, focus on the YouTube connection and encoder output.
Datarhei’s Basic Troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting process details and including useful project information when reporting an issue. Its YouTube connection guide describes connecting through YouTube’s RTMP details and viewing outgoing bitrate in Restreamer.

Check the YouTube connection and credentials
Use the current connection details
Confirm that Restreamer is configured with the current YouTube RTMP server information and stream key for the intended channel or event. The RTMP URL shown in a guide is an example, not a credential to copy blindly. Use the current details shown in your YouTube live setup and keep the stream key private.
If the key was regenerated, revoked, or entered incorrectly, update Restreamer with the current value. Do not paste a real key into public logs, issue reports, screenshots, or support tickets. Datarhei’s YouTube–Restreamer guide provides an RTMP example; use your own current YouTube connection details instead.

Do not assume an event or archive survives a reconnect
The behavior of a 24/7 broadcast after a disconnection—including whether the same YouTube event is reused and how archiving works—depends on the installed Restreamer version and the YouTube event configuration. Verify those details in your setup rather than assuming an automatic reconnect will preserve the event or archive.
Match encoder output to YouTube’s recommendations
Check the actual outgoing stream format against YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you selected. YouTube specifies H.264 video and AAC audio; its error guidance identifies other video or audio codec combinations as an incorrect format. Also compare resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe settings with the current encoder-settings page. Do not carry a bitrate target over from a different resolution or frame rate.

YouTube publishes ranges, not one universal bitrate. For example, its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance lists 6–30 Mbps for 1440p at 60 fps and 4–10 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those particular formats; check YouTube’s live guidance for your chosen output before changing settings.
YouTube’s live streaming error messages page explains how to use timestamped health errors and includes format-related errors. Match the wording of the message to the setting you inspect instead of lowering every encoder setting at once.

Test upload stability and network headroom
A stream may disconnect or arrive inconsistently if the upload path cannot sustain the selected output. Measure upload performance on the route used by the streaming server where possible; a speed test from a different device or network path may not reflect the connection Restreamer actually uses.
- Restream’s July 15, 2024 troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 10 Mbps upload, ideally over 25 Mbps to Restream servers, and setting video bitrate no higher than half the measured upload speed. These are Restream recommendations for its service context, not a guaranteed threshold for every Datarhei Restreamer deployment.
- The same guidance gives minimum video bitrates of 1.5 Mbps for 720p and 3 Mbps for 1080p. Those figures are Restream guidance, not substitutes for YouTube’s format-specific recommendations.
- Try a wired Ethernet connection if the encoder currently relies on Wi-Fi. Restream recommends Ethernet as a stability step; it is a troubleshooting measure, not a guaranteed fix.
- If instability continues, lower the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then observe whether the interruption recurs. Change one factor at a time so you can tell which adjustment affected the result.
These recommendations are from Restream Help Center’s “My encoder’s stream quality is bad” (July 15, 2024). Restream’s server guidance may not map exactly to your Datarhei server or route, so use it as a troubleshooting reference rather than a diagnosis.

Prepare a useful support report
If the fault persists, assemble the evidence before opening an issue. Datarhei’s troubleshooting advice is to inspect process details and provide useful project information. Include:
- Restreamer version and a description of the source-to-Restreamer-to-YouTube topology.
- The failure times and time zone, whether the source was still arriving, and what Restreamer showed for outgoing bitrate.
- The relevant process errors and YouTube Live Control Room health messages from the same time window.
- Encoder format and settings, plus a configuration excerpt only after removing stream keys and other credentials.
Never include a working stream key in a public issue or an unredacted configuration.
What continuity options do—and do not—apply
Do not assume that Datarhei Restreamer has a particular automatic-reconnect policy, retry interval, or guaranteed event-reuse behavior: those guarantees are not established by the cited Datarhei setup and troubleshooting materials. Check the documentation for your installed version and verify how your YouTube event is configured.
Restream’s separate disconnect-protection feature is not evidence of a Datarhei Restreamer capability. Restream documents a fallback video for its own RTMP/SRT setups; it must be configured before going live and the cited page limits availability to Business and custom Enterprise plans. See Restream’s disconnect-protection instructions if you use that service.
