In politics and organizational life, a faction is a subgroup within a larger body whose members share interests or views that differ in some way from the whole. Political parties are a familiar setting for factions, but factions are not necessarily formal caucuses, separate parties, or outside advocacy groups. This article uses the political and organizational meaning of the term.
What counts as a faction?
At its broadest, a faction is a group within a party or another organization that holds distinct interests or opinions. It may coordinate to shape the larger organization’s direction without becoming an organization in its own right. Reference works use this broad meaning; some political-science definitions set a higher threshold and reserve “faction” for a more structured group that competes for influence or advantages.
There is no single test that applies across every discipline and setting. A loosely aligned group of members can fit the broad definition, while a narrower analysis may require evidence of collective action, organization, or competition for power. A faction is therefore best understood by its relationship to a larger organization, not by assuming it has a fixed level of formality. Encyclopaedia Britannica’s definition and a political-science study of factionalism reflect this range.
How does a faction differ from a political party or interest group?
The terms describe different organizational roles. A party seeks electoral power and aims to influence or direct government; an interest group focuses on influencing public policy; a faction operates within a larger organization and seeks to affect that organization’s choices or direction. These roles can overlap in practice, but they are not interchangeable.

| Type | Where it sits | Typical aim |
|---|---|---|
| Political party | A broad electoral organization | Win office and shape government |
| Interest group | Generally outside the party or government it seeks to influence | Influence policy around particular goals or constituencies |
| Faction | Inside a larger party or organization | Influence the host organization’s direction |
These are useful distinctions, not impermeable boundaries: a faction may work with an interest group, and a faction inside a party may shape the party’s electoral strategy. The roles themselves remain different. OpenStax’s discussion of parties and interest groups describes the distinction between seeking office and influencing policy.
Why did Madison see factions as unavoidable?
In Federalist No. 10, James Madison treated faction as a recurring result of liberty and human differences, not a problem that could simply be eliminated without cost. People hold different opinions, form attachments to leaders, and have unequal interests. Those differences can lead them to act together in groups whose aims conflict with those of other citizens.

Madison singled out economic inequality: “But the most common and durable source of factions has been the various and unequal distribution of property.” — James Madison, Federalist No. 10 (1787). The essay appeared in the New York Packet on November 27, 1787; it is available through the Library of Congress Federalist Papers guide and the National Constitution Center.
For Madison, removing the causes of faction would mean suppressing liberty or trying to make people’s opinions and interests uniform—remedies he considered unacceptable or impossible. His argument is a political theory about constitutional design, not a measurement of how modern parties behave.

What did Madison think a republic could do about factions?
Madison’s answer was to limit the effects of faction rather than abolish its causes. He argued that representation could refine public views and that an extended republic would contain many different interests. With interests spread across a large union, he believed it would be harder for one faction to coordinate a majority across the whole country and oppress others.
This is Madison’s case for representative government and a large republic, not a guarantee that factions cannot dominate or a settled conclusion about every modern political system. Its central point is institutional: political arrangements can make harmful coordination more difficult even when disagreement and organized interests persist.

Are factions always harmful?
No categorical answer fits every use of the term. A faction can organize members around shared concerns and give them influence inside a larger body; it can also intensify rivalries or disrupt the organization. Whether it is seen as legitimate or destabilizing depends on its aims, conduct, and setting.
Renaissance political factions, for example, could form around personal loyalties, rivalries, opposition to government policies, or patronage. Some contributed to conflict or threatened political peace, while contemporaries disagreed about whether factions could have legitimate grounds. These groups illustrate the term’s historical range, but they should not be treated as organizational equivalents of modern party factions. Encyclopedia.com’s account of Renaissance factions describes that context.

What is factionalism?
Factionalism is the presence or activity of factions within a larger organization or political system. The word can describe internal divisions and competition, but it does not by itself establish that a faction is formal, harmful, or powerful. Those judgments require details about how the group is organized, what it seeks, and how it affects the host organization.
