First separate the two connections that are often both called “publishing”: a broadcaster can publish a source into MediaMTX, while MediaMTX can forward an available path to YouTube Live. A successful connection to MediaMTX does not prove YouTube received the forwarded stream. Check the source path, YouTube’s current URL and key, the RTMP or RTMPS settings, and the source’s audio and video tracks—in that order—before changing certificates or assuming a single cause.
What “publish” means in a MediaMTX-to-YouTube setup
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy: it can accept a stream from a publishing client and forward an available stream to another server. Those are separate links in the delivery chain. An RTMP client connecting successfully to MediaMTX confirms only the ingest leg; YouTube must still accept the onward connection and media. See the MediaMTX introduction, publishing documentation, and forwarding documentation.
This guide concerns the onward handoff from a MediaMTX path to YouTube. If you are troubleshooting a client that cannot publish into MediaMTX at all, that is a different connection to diagnose.
Check the path and YouTube settings first
- Confirm the MediaMTX source path is available. Check the path named in your configuration and verify that a source is publishing to it. Inspect the media on that path rather than treating a client’s successful connection as proof that YouTube has received it.
- Copy the current YouTube Stream URL and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream tab or schedule a stream. In Stream settings, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL if that is the endpoint you intend to use; copy the URL and stream key separately. YouTube’s displayed default may be ordinary RTMP, so do not assume the RTMPS address is already selected or that an old saved URL remains current. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Match the destination scheme and endpoint. Use the exact current URL YouTube provides and the corresponding scheme—
rtmp://for RTMP orrtmps://for RTMPS. MediaMTX’s documentation includes an illustrative YouTube host, but explicitly treats it as time-sensitive; do not copy it as a guaranteed current endpoint. - Keep the key separate in MediaMTX’s forwarding syntax. MediaMTX’s
forwardentry uses#to separate the destination URL from the stream key. Its documented shape is:
paths:
mypath:
forward:
- dest: rtmps://CURRENT_URL_FROM_YOUTUBE#REDACTED_STREAM_KEY
This is a format illustration, not a working endpoint or key. Replace the URL with the one currently shown in Live Control Room and supply your own key privately. Do not paste a real key into a public issue, screenshot, log excerpt, or shared configuration. Redact it before asking for help.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check for both audio and video. MediaMTX warns that YouTube requires both tracks and silently rejects a video-only stream. A picture at the source path is not enough: verify that the exact path being forwarded carries audio as well as video.
- Only then investigate remaining failures. Record the deployed MediaMTX version, the relevant log lines around forwarding startup and failure, a redacted path configuration, track presence, and whether YouTube reports an SSL error, timeout, or no incoming data. Those details distinguish otherwise similar symptoms.
Troubleshoot by the error YouTube reports
“Invalid SSL certificate” or another RTMPS SSL error
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Check that the configured URL is the current YouTube-provided RTMPS URL and that both scheme and server match it. If the URL appears correct but the SSL error persists, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to try port 443 in the URL or encoder settings, while still matching the actual Stream URL supplied in Live Control Room.
MediaMTX documents a destFingerprint option for a destination with a self-signed or invalid certificate. Its YouTube example includes a fingerprint based on what MediaMTX observed when it checked; that observation can become stale. Do not treat the example fingerprint as a universal fix or bypass certificate validation casually. First verify the actual endpoint and certificate, and use a fingerprint only when you understand and have validated the certificate you intend to trust.

“Connection timed out”
Start with YouTube’s two checks: confirm the server URL is correct and verify that the forwarder supports RTMPS if you selected an RTMPS destination. A timeout alone does not identify one root cause. If those checks do not resolve it, preserve the exact failure logs and deployment context instead of changing unrelated settings at random.
YouTube shows no incoming stream
Confirm the source path is active and contains both audio and video, then recheck the current destination URL and key. YouTube’s silent rejection of video-only streams can make a transport connection look like a missing-stream problem. Also distinguish the local ingest connection from the onward forwarding connection: one may work while the other fails.

Use FFmpeg to test the MediaMTX ingest leg—not YouTube forwarding
If you need to verify that MediaMTX can receive a local file, the MediaMTX FFmpeg documentation shows this sample:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream
This publishes the file to a local MediaMTX RTMP endpoint; it is not a command that forwards directly to YouTube and does not test YouTube acceptance. MediaMTX documents FFmpeg publishing over several protocols and recommends RTSP for FFmpeg acting as a client to MediaMTX. Use the test only to isolate the ingest side of your setup.

What to include when asking for a specific diagnosis
- The exact MediaMTX release or version and relevant log lines from forwarding startup through the failure.
- The path configuration with the stream key, credentials, and other secrets removed.
- Whether the forwarded source has audio and video tracks.
- The current URL format selected in YouTube Live Control Room, plus the configured scheme and port. Never include the live key.
- The precise symptom YouTube reports: SSL, timeout, or no incoming data.
- Your deployment and network context, such as where MediaMTX runs and whether the connection can reach the chosen endpoint.
The official MediaMTX and YouTube guidance covers setup and several high-value checks, but does not map every MediaMTX log message to a particular YouTube failure. Without the version, logs, redacted configuration, and track details, a more specific root cause would be speculation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than forwarding a live MediaMTX path, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or replace MediaMTX troubleshooting for this forwarding setup.
