You can keep a YouTube Live channel running from an India-region VPS, but NGINX RTMP alone is not a guarantee that YouTube will accept an encrypted outgoing stream. Use YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and stream key, and confirm that the exact NGINX build or separate encoder supports TLS and the required connection. The practical setup is: prepare a VPS and media source, choose a relay or encoder architecture, configure the outbound YouTube connection, then test and supervise it before relying on it unattended.
How the VPS-to-YouTube stream works
Keep the incoming contribution stream distinct from the outgoing YouTube connection. A typical pipeline is:
Media or camera/feed → encoder → optional NGINX RTMP relay on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest
NGINX may accept an RTMP publish from an encoder and relay it onward. Alternatively, an RTMPS-capable encoder can send directly to YouTube, without NGINX. A relay forwards already encoded media; encoding or transcoding on the VPS adds CPU work. Either design still requires sustained network egress.

NGINX’s official RTMP module documentation describes video streaming with RTMP, HLS, and DASH and gives installation guidance for an NGINX Plus dynamic module. That scope does not establish that every NGINX RTMP build can push to YouTube over RTMPS. Check the exact module implementation and build for outbound TLS support, including the TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) behavior required by the destination hostname, or send to YouTube with a separate encoder known to support RTMPS. See NGINX’s RTMP module documentation and YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.
Choose relay or direct encoding
- Direct encoder-to-YouTube: Fewer components to configure. Confirm the encoder supports YouTube RTMPS and can reconnect or be restarted reliably.
- Encoder-to-NGINX relay-to-YouTube: Useful when a separate encoder needs to publish to a VPS relay. Restrict who can publish to the relay and verify that the outbound relay path supports TLS and YouTube’s endpoint requirements.
- Encode or transcode on the VPS: This can avoid a separate encoding machine, but requires more CPU capacity than simply relaying already encoded media. No universal VPS size follows from the available guidance; assess the specific workload and provider limits.
Prepare the India-region VPS and network
Select a provider and plan based on the workload rather than a generic “streaming VPS” label. Check the provider’s current CPU policy, sustained transfer allowance, network limits or traffic shaping, support, India region availability, and acceptable-use rules. No specific provider, plan, price, or sizing benchmark is established here.

Estimate continuous outbound bandwidth
Use the encoded video and audio bitrate to estimate transfer before choosing a plan. At a constant bitrate of B megabits per second, one decimal terabyte (1,000 GB) lasts approximately 92.6 ÷ B days, before protocol overhead. For example, a 10 Mbps stream works out to about 9.3 days per decimal terabyte; a month of uninterrupted streaming at that bitrate is roughly 3.24 TB before overhead. Actual transfer can be higher, so include audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and any other VPS traffic, then compare the estimate with the provider’s allowance.
The National Informatics Centre (Government of India) lists “2–4 Mbps per stream” as dedicated bandwidth for its webcast service and asks users in that service context to verify outbound RTMP port 1935. This is a scoped reference, not a YouTube bitrate recommendation or a VPS plan guarantee. YouTube RTMPS requirements specify port 443; verify outbound access to the actual endpoint and port used by your account. NIC’s page does not state a publication year: NIC webcast services.

Get YouTube’s current RTMPS connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Check that the channel is currently eligible to livestream.
- In the stream settings, choose or reveal the RTMPS connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Do not substitute a remembered or old static ingest address.
- Keep the URL and key private. Do not expose the key in public logs, screenshots, shared configuration repositories, or support messages. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before resuming.
- Configure the encoder or relay with those exact account-provided values. Use the full RTMPS endpoint and port as shown; the hostname matters to TLS SNI. A cleartext RTMP connection or incorrect server/port can cause SSL connection failures.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its RTMPS API material specifies port 443 and an endpoint URL with a valid path. YouTube’s Live API also models primary and backup RTMPS addresses alongside resolution and frame-rate fields, reinforcing that ingestion details should be taken from the account or current API resource rather than assumed. See YouTube encoder settings and bitrates, YouTube RTMPS requirements, and YouTube Live stream resources.
Set encoder video, audio, and keyframe settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. Match bitrate to the precise resolution, frame rate, and codec row in YouTube’s current table. These H.264 recommendations are examples, not guarantees of stability or VPS sizing guidance:

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
- Set rate control to CBR.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose the matching resolution and frame rate for your source and intended output. Do not assume that increasing resolution improves a source that was recorded at lower quality.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio and ensure the source actually contains the audio you intend to broadcast.
For current values beyond these examples, consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
Configure NGINX without assuming a universal working file
There is no tested, provider-specific NGINX configuration established for this setup. Configuration directives and outbound TLS behavior vary with the exact NGINX distribution, RTMP module, and build, so do not paste a generic RTMP example into production on the assumption that it can push encrypted YouTube traffic.

- Install an NGINX package and RTMP module appropriate to the VPS distribution. Verify the module documentation and package actually match that build; the NGINX Plus dynamic module instructions are not a compatibility guarantee for unrelated third-party builds.
- If NGINX receives a remote publish, configure access restrictions so only your intended encoder can publish. Use network controls where possible and avoid exposing an open ingest endpoint to the public internet.
- Before configuring YouTube output through NGINX, verify the implementation supports outbound RTMPS over TLS, the account’s current endpoint format, port 443, and SNI for the endpoint hostname. If you cannot verify all of that, use a separate RTMPS-capable encoder for the YouTube leg.
- Protect stream keys and relay credentials. Limit access to configuration files, redact secrets from application and service logs, and do not commit them to a public repository.
- Set up process supervision and alerting for whichever encoder or relay you use. Decide how the service will restart after a crash and how an operator will learn that it has stopped; test those recovery paths.
Test and supervise the 24/7 broadcast
- Run an upload speed test from the actual sending environment and confirm the route can sustain the chosen bitrate with room for overhead.
- Start a test with representative motion and audio, rather than a static or silent sample if the planned channel includes movement and sound.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the test runs. Correct bitrate, dropped-frame, audio, or connection warnings before relying on an unattended stream.
- Keep the test running long enough to observe network stability and the behavior of your reconnect and restart setup. A brief successful connection does not establish that a route or VPS will remain stable continuously.
- Check service logs and alerts after stopping or interrupting the encoder or relay. Confirm that the system reports the failure and that the intended recovery procedure restores the stream.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health and messages. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so the encoder’s outgoing bitrate is not the same thing as a guarantee of a particular viewer experience. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| TLS or SSL connection failure | Cleartext RTMP used instead of RTMPS, wrong server or port, or client/build does not support the required TLS connection. | Copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room; verify port and endpoint path; confirm outbound TLS and SNI support in the exact encoder or NGINX build. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong stream key, endpoint, or outbound network access. | Re-copy the current URL and key from the stream settings, check key privacy/reset status, and verify the VPS can reach the selected endpoint and port. |
| Stream health warnings or dropped frames | Insufficient or inconsistent egress, bitrate mismatch, or provider traffic limits. | Compare the stream bitrate with YouTube’s applicable table row; measure sustained upload from the VPS; check transfer limits, shaping, and route stability with the provider. |
| VPS CPU stays high | The VPS is encoding or transcoding rather than only relaying. | Confirm the media path and workload; assess CPU policy and capacity for the encoding settings, rather than applying relay-only expectations. |
| Stream stops and does not return | Encoder or relay exited, restart supervision is missing, or reconnect behavior was not validated. | Inspect service and application logs, test restart supervision, and verify that a restarted process uses the correct current endpoint and protected key. |
| Remote publisher can send to the relay unexpectedly | Publish access is insufficiently restricted. | Restrict the ingest endpoint and credentials to intended publishers, review network exposure, and rotate credentials if they were exposed. |
Copyright, reused content, and channel eligibility
A technically stable feed does not establish that the channel or the videos are eligible for livestreaming or monetization. Confirm the channel’s current YouTube Live eligibility and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules. YouTube may act on rights-protected material, and looping or rebroadcasting content does not make it yours or exempt it from policy. Use media you own or have permission to stream, and review the current YouTube Live encoder guidance and account notices before leaving a channel unattended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS, encoder process, and outbound RTMPS path, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos from the cloud:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the media from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
It supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. The service is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start the free first day at StreamNeo registration.
