If an Nginx RTMP stream is not appearing in YouTube Studio, first verify that the relay is publishing to the current Stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Then confirm that the encoder’s upstream connection succeeds, check that RTMP or RTMPS matches the endpoint, and follow Studio’s preview-to-Go-live workflow. Starting Nginx alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a stream.
1. Confirm the YouTube endpoint and stream key

Open YouTube Studio and enter the scheduled stream in Live Control Room, or create a live stream with an encoder.

Copy the current Stream URL and stream key displayed there into the upstream settings used by your encoder or Nginx RTMP relay. YouTube requires the encoder to send its feed to the server URL with the matching key. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

If you recently reset the key, replace the old key everywhere the relay or encoder uses it. Treat the key like a password: don’t paste it into public logs, screenshots, or support posts. You can manage stream keys in Studio; see Manage live stream settings.

Do not assume an old endpoint or key is still valid just because it worked for a previous broadcast. Use the values shown for the stream you are trying to start.
2. Check whether the relay actually publishes upstream
A running Nginx process only shows that the local service started; it does not establish that your encoder connected to the relay or that the relay successfully published to YouTube. Check the status and logs for both legs of the connection:

Does the relay then connect to YouTube’s upstream endpoint and publish, rather than merely accepting the local input?

Do the logs show a connection, authentication, publish, or network error at either point?
These checks help locate the failing connection, but YouTube’s setup and troubleshooting guidance does not establish Nginx-specific directives or log signatures as the cause. The exact relay-side problem cannot be identified without the actual configuration and relevant logs. Redact the stream key before sharing either.

3. Match RTMP or RTMPS to the endpoint
RTMP and RTMPS endpoints are not interchangeable just because both carry a live stream. Use the protocol and exact Stream URL supplied in Live Control Room, and verify that the sending software supports that protocol.
If you use RTMPS
Check the RTMPS URL, TLS connection, and port 443. Google’s RTMPS delivery guide specifies using TLS on port 443 and the correct hostname for SNI authentication; a hostname, certificate, or handshake mismatch can prevent connection. YouTube also recommends checking the RTMPS URL and port 443 when troubleshooting SSL errors or encoder timeouts. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
If you use RTMP
Confirm that your relay is using the RTMP Stream URL provided for the stream, with the matching key. Do not substitute an RTMPS address or infer an endpoint from a different stream’s settings.

4. Wait for the preview, then make the stream live
For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. Receiving video and making the scheduled broadcast live to viewers are separate steps. If the preview appears but viewers cannot watch, check the stream’s privacy setting: it may be private or unlisted. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
5. Read YouTube’s stream status
If you use the YouTube LiveStreams API, its state and health fields can help distinguish “not sending” from other stream conditions. Google defines active as YouTube receiving data and inactive as not receiving data. States such as ready, created, and error are distinct; health information provides additional diagnostics. These are YouTube’s view of the stream, not an explanation of which Nginx setting failed. See Google’s LiveStreams API reference.
6. Refresh the key if YouTube reports a startup error
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for third-party encoder startup errors is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. After changing the key, make sure the relay is no longer using the old value. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

RTMP or RTMPS: what to compare

The RTMPS requirements above follow Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide and YouTube’s RTMPS help page. Choose based on the endpoint YouTube provides and what your software supports; don’t assume one URL works for both protocols.
