Choose the workflow that matches your broadcast
NGINX RTMP is one way to operate a streaming pipeline, but it is not necessary when your goal is simply to schedule a recording as a YouTube Live event. Hosted services can take responsibility for file playback and scheduling; an encoder workflow instead sends a live feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, leaving you responsible for the encoder and its configuration.

2. Castr for scheduled and looping broadcasts
Castr documents MP4 uploads, one-time scheduled broadcasts, looping, and multiple destinations, with cloud playback that does not require a local encoder. Its YouTube connection instructions allow connecting by API or by entering YouTube’s streaming server and key. With the key method, Castr says the stream description must be edited in YouTube’s dashboard. Infinite looping is described for Premium and higher, but confirm the current plan matrix and limits before subscribing.

3. StreamYard for a scheduled event that ends with the video
StreamYard’s automatic prerecorded mode starts at its selected scheduled time and ends when the video finishes. Its help documentation specifies MP4 with H.264 video, paid-plan output up to 1080p, and a 10 Mbps upload bitrate ceiling; maximum duration, upload size, and simultaneous scheduling depend on the plan.
This automatic mode does not support studio overlays or displaying comments on-stream, and recordings are no longer automatically saved to the StreamYard library. If you need intros, outros, or overlays, StreamYard recommends using its regular studio workflow: start the broadcast yourself and play the recording as long-form media.
4. Restream Upload & Stream for playlists and chat
Restream lets users upload a recording to its storage or import one through Descript, Google Drive, or Dropbox, then schedule it as a live event. Its help article describes single-video and playlist streaming and looping a scheduled video up to ten times. Confirm current plan availability, file and playlist limits, and destination support for your use case.

Keep an encoder workflow: YouTube ingest protocols
If you prefer to operate an encoder or another ingest pipeline, YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party ingest. YouTube’s protocol comparison, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, distinguishes them by encryption, codec support, and latency. RTMP and RTMPS can be used for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection. HLS supports H.264 and HEVC, while DASH supports H.264 and VP9. YouTube describes HLS and DASH as better suited to 4K and other high-resolution use cases, but not ultra-low latency; their segment-based delivery typically adds more latency than RTMP. RTMPS is RTMP carried over an SSL connection. YouTube’s setup guidance requires an rtmps URL, a valid ingest endpoint and application path, and port 443. Choose the protocol your encoder and workflow support, and verify the endpoint and key in YouTube’s live controls. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingest guidance.
Check these details before scheduling
- File compatibility: Confirm the service’s supported format and codec. StreamYard’s documented automatic prerecorded mode requires MP4 with H.264 video.
- Duration and file size: Hosted services impose plan-dependent limits. Check the current plan for the intended video or playlist rather than assuming a limit from an older help page.
- Playback behavior: Decide whether the recording should play once, repeat, or run as a playlist. Castr describes scheduled and looping broadcasts, Restream describes playlists and up to ten loops, and StreamNeo is designed for 24/7 looping.
- Event presentation: Check whether the workflow includes overlays, comments, chat, and an archive. StreamYard’s automatic prerecorded mode omits studio overlays and on-stream comments and is not automatically saved to its library.
- Destination and plan: Confirm YouTube connection method, any additional destinations you need, concurrency, storage, and plan eligibility directly with the provider. Vendor plans and features can change.
Common problems and fixes
The scheduled event does not start
For a hosted service, confirm the event time, selected destination, connected YouTube account, and that the recording is ready and eligible under the plan’s file and duration limits. For an encoder workflow, check that the encoder is using the intended YouTube ingest endpoint, protocol, and stream key.

The video will not upload or play
Check the service’s accepted file type and codec, then compare the recording’s size and duration with the account’s current plan limits. StreamYard’s automatic mode specifies MP4/H.264; do not assume the same format or limits apply to every other service.
The stream has more latency than expected
Review the ingest protocol and latency target. YouTube describes HLS and DASH as segment-based and generally higher-latency than RTMP; they are not intended for ultra-low-latency use.
RTMPS fails to connect
Verify that the URL uses the rtmps protocol, includes the valid endpoint and application path, and uses port 443. Also confirm the encoder supports the selected protocol and that the stream key is current.

The stream appears without the expected title or description
If you connected Castr to YouTube by entering the streaming server and key rather than using its API connection, Castr’s instructions say to edit the stream description in YouTube’s dashboard.
Cost and operating trade-offs
With a self-managed NGINX RTMP setup, you operate the server and encoder pipeline; a comparable total cost for that approach has not been published. Hosted providers have their own plan limits and entitlements, which can change, so compare the current plan against required storage, duration, looping, resolution, destinations, and scheduling capacity.
