How to Restart a MediaMTX YouTube Stream Automatically After a Disconnect

Use MediaMTX’s runOnInitRestart option to relaunch an exited publishing command, then verify the YouTube event reconnects as expected.

If MediaMTX launches your YouTube publishing process with a path’s runOnInit hook, set runOnInitRestart: yes to have MediaMTX relaunch that command when it exits. This is process recovery—not a guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live event, and it does not detect a publisher that is still running but hung.

Set MediaMTX to restart the publisher command

In the configuration for the path that starts your publisher, keep your existing runOnInit command and add runOnInitRestart: yes to that path’s settings. The command may launch FFmpeg or another publishing process; the restart option applies when that command exits. See the MediaMTX hooks documentation for the documented behavior and configuration context.

  1. Identify the MediaMTX path whose runOnInit hook launches the process that publishes to YouTube.
  2. In that path’s configuration, add runOnInitRestart: yes. Do not replace or alter your working publisher command unless you have a separate reason to change it.
  3. Check the command’s input, encoder settings, YouTube Live server URL, and stream key. YouTube requires the server URL and key for encoder setup; its encoder setup instructions explain where to find and use them.
  4. Apply the configuration using the procedure appropriate to your installed MediaMTX version, then check its logs and confirm the publisher starts.
  5. In a test stream, deliberately stop the publisher process. Confirm that MediaMTX starts it again, then check the YouTube preview and watch page to establish what viewers see after reconnection.

The MediaMTX documentation and configuration links here point to the rolling main branch, not a release-tagged manual. Check the option against the documentation and configuration for the exact version you run; the pages reviewed do not establish a minimum supported release.

Know which disconnect or failure you are handling

MediaMTX has several hooks and path features whose names can sound related, but they respond to different events. Only runOnInitRestart directly addresses restarting an exited command launched by runOnInit.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Mechanism What it responds to What it does not do
runOnInitRestart: yes Restarts the command launched by runOnInit if that command exits. See the hooks documentation. The reviewed documentation does not say it detects a process that stays running but is hung, or that it guarantees YouTube event recovery.
runOnDisconnect Runs a command when a client disconnects from MediaMTX. MediaMTX documents it as a client-disconnect hook in its hooks documentation. It is not the documented switch for restarting an exited runOnInit publisher.
runOnOnline and runOnOffline Run hooks in response to a path’s online or offline state, as described in the MediaMTX configuration template. A path-state hook is not, by itself, proof that the upstream publishing process was relaunched.
alwaysAvailable Can serve an offline segment to readers while a source is offline. See the always-available feature documentation. It does not restart the upstream publisher or promise continued YouTube ingestion.

What a restart does—and does not—guarantee on YouTube

There are two separate links to verify: MediaMTX must relaunch the publishing command, and that command must successfully reconnect to YouTube using the correct Live server URL and stream key. A successful process restart does not establish that YouTube will continue the same viewer-facing event after every interruption.

YouTube documents stream settings, including reusable settings and auto-start/auto-stop controls, but those controls concern starting and stopping behavior; they are not a blanket guarantee for every reconnect scenario. Test with the event and settings you intend to use. Check the preview, watch page, and actual reconnect behavior. YouTube also recommends testing encoder failover and continuously monitoring audio and video in its live streaming tips. Its stream settings guidance covers event controls.

Troubleshoot a publisher that does not recover

  • The command exits but does not restart: Confirm the option is set to yes on the same path that defines runOnInit, and verify that the running MediaMTX version supports the option. Compare against that version’s configuration documentation.
  • You used runOnDisconnect: That hook responds to a client disconnect from MediaMTX. Use runOnInitRestart for restarting an exited initialization command.
  • The command restarts, but YouTube stays offline: Check the publisher’s logs, input availability, YouTube Live server URL, and stream key. Then inspect the YouTube preview and event state; a process restart alone cannot verify that YouTube accepted the connection.
  • The publisher appears alive but no video arrives: The documented restart behavior is tied to command exit. The reviewed pages do not establish detection of a hung process, so check the process and media flow separately rather than assuming the restart option will recover it.
  • Local MediaMTX readers need a placeholder during an outage: Consider alwaysAvailable for serving an offline segment to those readers. It is a continuity aid for MediaMTX readers, not a YouTube publisher recovery mechanism.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than relaying a live camera or another live source through MediaMTX, StreamNeo is a different, simpler setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a replacement for MediaMTX when you need to publish a live source. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
