To keep a YouTube channel supplied by a looping video, run FFmpeg to publish the media into MediaMTX, then configure MediaMTX to forward that stream to YouTube Live. Docker keeps MediaMTX and its editable configuration in a containerized setup; the containers and network still need to stay available for the broadcast to continue.
How the setup works
The flow is video file or other source → FFmpeg → MediaMTX path → YouTube Live. FFmpeg reads and publishes the source; MediaMTX receives it and forwards it to YouTube. MediaMTX describes itself as a live media server and proxy that can publish, read, proxy, record, and play real-time audio and video. Its always-available stream capability does not guarantee that a YouTube broadcast survives every upstream, container, network, or account failure.
The commands and configuration below are documented patterns and practical guidance, not a report of a tested end-to-end deployment. Names, paths, and network addresses must match your own Docker layout.
Choose where the containers will run
Use a host that can remain online and reach YouTube Live. If FFmpeg runs in a different container from MediaMTX, address the MediaMTX service by its Docker network name (or another reachable host address), not localhost: inside a container, localhost refers to that container itself.

MediaMTX’s Docker guide publishes ports for its supported protocols, including RTSP 8554 and RTMP 1935. Expose only the listener ports your design uses, and make sure FFmpeg can reach the selected listener. The RTSP example below assumes MediaMTX listens on port 8554.
Configure MediaMTX in Docker
Keep the configuration on the host
MediaMTX documents downloading a mediamtx.yml file to a local directory, mounting that directory into the container, and setting it as the container’s working directory. This leaves the configuration editable outside the container. Follow the current MediaMTX Docker guide for the image and mount syntax, and choose an intentional image version rather than assuming a floating tag always means the same build.
The configuration reference consulted identifies MediaMTX v1.21.1; that is version context, not a recommendation that every deployment should use that version. Review the current release and configuration reference when choosing or upgrading an image.

Set an incoming path and YouTube forwarding destination
Configure a MediaMTX path for FFmpeg’s incoming publication and a forwarding destination for YouTube. The MediaMTX YouTube forwarding guide describes retrieving the current Stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Go Live interface, then separating the key from the URL with # in the destination configuration.
Use YouTube’s currently displayed endpoint and key; do not treat an example URL as permanent. MediaMTX recommends replacing rtmp:// with rtmps:// for encryption in transit. Its example endpoint and certificate fingerprint are explicitly time-sensitive, and the page notes a certificate issue at its last check. Verify current endpoint and certificate behavior before using a fingerprint workaround. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it in screenshots, public examples, or version control.
Validate before starting
MediaMTX documents configuration validation with --validate-conf. Validate the mounted configuration before bringing up the service. It also supports configuration overrides through environment variables prefixed with MTX_ (nested map values use underscores and list values can use numeric positions) and configuration through the Control API. The documentation says configuration changes are hot-reloaded without disconnecting existing clients whenever possible; do not assume every change can be applied without interruption.

Publish a looping video from FFmpeg
Use the documented RTSP publishing pattern
MediaMTX calls RTSP its recommended FFmpeg publishing method. For a file named file.mp4, its documented loop pattern is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f rtsp rtsp://localhost:8554/mystream

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →-re reads the input in real time, -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely, and -c copy passes through the existing audio and video streams instead of encoding them. Replace the file name, host, port, and path with values that fit your setup. If FFmpeg is in another container, replace localhost with the MediaMTX service name on the shared Docker network.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Stream copy is suitable only if the source’s codecs and tracks work for the destination workflow. The example does not establish codec compatibility for every file or YouTube ingest configuration. Check the source and confirm the received stream in YouTube Live before relying on it.
RTMP is another documented option
MediaMTX also documents publishing the same kind of looped file over RTMP:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream

Use the RTMP listener and port in your MediaMTX configuration and Docker networking. MediaMTX also lists SRT, WebRTC, MPEG-TS, and RTP as FFmpeg publishing options. The appropriate choice depends on protocol support in your FFmpeg build and MediaMTX listener, container reachability, and whether you need to transcode rather than copy. The cited documentation does not establish a universal latency or quality winner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the YouTube stream before leaving it running
- Confirm both tracks. MediaMTX’s forwarding instructions warn that YouTube requires video and audio tracks and silently rejects video-only streams. Check that your source has both, or configure FFmpeg to produce a valid audio track where appropriate. This requirement does not establish that the audio must contain audible program material.
- Verify the current ingest details. Copy the Stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live, and verify the endpoint and certificate rather than relying on old examples.
- Check the live preview and status. Confirm that YouTube receives both tracks and that the broadcast is actually live before treating the setup as unattended.
- Watch the service logs. MediaMTX documents logging and metrics capabilities; use them to investigate publisher or forwarding errors. No particular end-to-end monitoring procedure or uptime guarantee is established here.
This setup guide does not establish YouTube’s current recommended bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, codec profile, account eligibility rules, or live activation delays. Check YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance for those requirements instead of inferring settings from an FFmpeg example.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect to MediaMTX | Wrong address, port, path, or Docker network; or the listener is not exposed. | Confirm MediaMTX is listening on the chosen protocol and port, FFmpeg can reach that address, and the publication path matches the configuration. If FFmpeg is in another container, do not use its own localhost to refer to MediaMTX. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming stream | Incorrect or outdated Stream URL/key, forwarding destination error, or a failed upstream connection. | Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Live, check MediaMTX logs, and verify that the configured destination and transport are current. |
| YouTube rejects or does not accept the stream | A required audio or video track is missing, or the media format is unsuitable. | Check that both tracks reach MediaMTX and YouTube. Confirm the file’s codecs and tracks; stream copy does not make an incompatible source compatible. |
| Configuration fails to load | Invalid YAML, an incorrect mount, or configuration values that do not match the MediaMTX version. | Check the host file path and container mount, validate with --validate-conf, and compare settings with the configuration reference for the image version you selected. |
| The stream stops when the source or host stops | The workflow depends on FFmpeg and MediaMTX running, plus network access to YouTube. | Check whether the FFmpeg process, container, host, or network failed. MediaMTX’s always-available stream capability is not a guarantee against every failure in this chain. |
| RTMPS connection or certificate errors | The endpoint or certificate behavior may have changed; a documented fingerprint workaround may no longer apply. | Recheck YouTube’s current Stream URL and MediaMTX’s current forwarding guidance. Do not copy a time-sensitive fingerprint without verifying it. |
