Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To relay an existing HLS stream to YouTube Live, configure MediaMTX to pull the HLS playlist, then use FFmpeg or another compatible encoder to read that MediaMTX path and publish to YouTube’s RTMP or recommended RTMPS ingest URL with your stream key. These are two separate connections: MediaMTX acquires and exposes the source; the encoder sends it to YouTube. The exact encoder command depends on the source’s codecs and timestamps, your output settings, and whether the media can be copied or must be transcoded.
How the relay is arranged
HLS origin → MediaMTX path → local MediaMTX read URL → FFmpeg or another encoder → YouTube RTMP(S) URL + stream key
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy that can pull an HTTP(S) HLS playlist and expose the resulting path to compatible readers. Enabling MediaMTX’s HLS or RTMP features does not, by itself, configure YouTube as an output destination. A separate publishing client makes the outgoing YouTube connection.
This setup is for an existing HLS live source. It does not turn a camera feed into HLS, nor does it establish that every source codec can be passed through to YouTube unchanged. The official MediaMTX documentation describes protocol and path behavior; it does not establish a tested end-to-end command for every source and encoder combination.

Configure MediaMTX to pull the HLS source
In the configuration used by the running MediaMTX instance, add a named path whose source is the HLS playlist URL. The documented pattern is:
paths:
hls_source:
source: https://origin.example/live/playlist.m3u8
Replace the example URL with the actual playlist address. Keep any required authorization details private. If credentials appear in the URL and contain characters with special meaning in URLs, encode them as required by the source documentation.

The configuration file and defaults depend on the deployed version and any overrides. The project’s rolling main configuration accessed October 3, 2026 shows HLS enabled on port 8888 and RTMP enabled on port 1935 by default. Those defaults do not guarantee that either service is enabled or reachable in your installation: check the configuration actually running, Docker port publishing if applicable, firewall rules, and hosting network policy.
Find the YouTube ingest URL and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the publishing encoder. YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter both values in the encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, shared log, or source repository. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
Use the ingest URL format YouTube provides in Live Control Room rather than assuming a hostname or path. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends the encrypted extension to RTMP.

Read the MediaMTX path and publish to YouTube
First make sure the configured path is available to a reader on the machine running the publishing encoder. MediaMTX documents RTMP readers by path; with the documented default RTMP listener, a typical local read URL for the example path is rtmp://127.0.0.1:1935/hls_source. If your listener, path, container networking, or configuration differs, use the actual reachable address and path instead. Do not assume this example URL is available from another machine or exposed to the public internet.
Then configure FFmpeg or another encoder with that MediaMTX read URL as its input and the YouTube-provided RTMP(S) URL plus stream key as its output. There is no single responsible command to copy here: input protocol details, track codecs, timestamps, output codec support, and the chosen ingest URL affect the required flags. Confirm the command against your installed encoder’s documentation and your source before relying on it. In particular, determine whether the source can be stream-copied or needs decoding and re-encoding.

Stream-copy or transcode?
- Stream-copy: avoids a generation of encoding, but is appropriate only if the source tracks, timestamps, and output container/protocol are compatible with the encoder and YouTube’s accepted settings.
- Transcode: decode and encode the tracks when the source codec, frame rate, resolution, audio format, or timestamp behavior is unsuitable. This adds processing requirements and can affect image quality; select settings deliberately rather than assuming protocol conversion changes codecs.
Set YouTube-compatible encoder parameters
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are ingest recommendations; check YouTube Help for the current table and settings when configuring a particular encoder.
For H.264, YouTube’s bitrate table accessed in 2026 recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These values apply to those specific resolution/frame-rate rows; they are not universal requirements for every codec or source. Choose the matching row for your intended output and codec, and make sure the available upload bandwidth can sustain the stream with headroom.

- Use RTMPS if supported by the encoder and provided YouTube endpoint.
- Set CBR, the intended output resolution and frame rate, and a 2-second keyframe interval (never above 4 seconds).
- Use AAC or MP3 audio and one of YouTube’s supported video codecs.
- Check that the source has continuous timestamps and stable audio/video tracks; transcode if needed rather than assuming an HLS-to-RTMP relay makes incompatible media acceptable.
Test each stage before going live
- Check source access: confirm the playlist URL is reachable and its segments continue to load. If the source requires credentials, confirm they are valid and correctly encoded.
- Check MediaMTX: inspect its logs and configuration to verify the path is ready and the HLS source is being acquired.
- Check the local read: use a compatible client to read the MediaMTX path and verify picture, sound, and continuity before adding YouTube as the destination.
- Check the encoder: confirm it can decode the incoming tracks, or configure compatible transcoding. Verify the output codec, frame rate, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and audio settings.
- Check YouTube reception: start the publishing connection and confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room. Review stream health and preview audio and video before depending on the relay.
Troubleshoot by locating the broken link
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| MediaMTX cannot load the playlist | HLS origin or path configuration | Confirm the playlist URL, credentials, URL encoding, origin availability, and MediaMTX path configuration. Check logs for fetch or parsing errors. |
| The path is not readable locally | MediaMTX listener or network | Verify the path name, active RTMP listener and port, address used by the client, container port publishing, and firewall rules. Defaults may have been changed. |
| The encoder connects but shows no picture or sound | Track decoding or compatibility | Inspect the incoming video and audio tracks and timestamps. Try a compatible transcode if the source tracks cannot be passed through. |
| The encoder cannot connect to YouTube | Destination URL, key, or connectivity | Re-copy the server URL and key from Live Control Room, check the selected RTMP(S) transport and outbound network access, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health | Output settings or network capacity | Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio format with YouTube’s current guidance. Check that the outgoing connection has enough stable bandwidth. |
| Playback starts but freezes or falls behind | Source continuity or relay capacity | Check whether the HLS playlist and segments continue updating, whether timestamps remain continuous, and whether the encoder or network can sustain the selected output. |
Do not confuse HLS source with YouTube HLS ingest
In this relay, HLS is the incoming source protocol and RTMP(S) is the outgoing YouTube ingest protocol. YouTube also supports HLS ingest as a separate destination mode, but it uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than RTMP; it has its own segment and upload constraints. Use that mode only when you specifically intend to publish to YouTube’s HLS ingest workflow, not merely because the source is HLS.
Copyright and channel eligibility still apply
A relay does not grant rights to rebroadcast the source. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming rules before broadcasting. Passing a technical ingest check does not establish that a stream complies with YouTube’s policies or qualifies for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel rather than relay a changing third-party HLS source, StreamNeo is a different, cloud-based workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based HLS relay.
Quick Recap
