You can use Vagrant with DigitalOcean in two different ways: run Vagrant on your computer and use a third-party provider plugin to manage Droplets, or deploy DigitalOcean’s Vagrant 1-Click Droplet and run Vagrant on that remote machine. They are different architectures. This guide explains both, leads with the documented 1-Click route, and flags the provider plugin’s dated compatibility evidence so you can choose without assuming it works with your current versions.
Choose where Vagrant should run
Vagrant describes a machine through a project’s Vagrantfile and relies on a provider to connect its lifecycle commands to a backend. Providers are separate integrations, and Vagrant boxes are provider-specific. See HashiCorp’s provider overview and provider usage documentation.
| Route | Where Vagrant runs | What connects it to DigitalOcean | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Vagrant 1-Click Droplet | On the remote Droplet; you connect to it over SSH. | The Marketplace image installs Vagrant on the Droplet. | You want a ready-made remote machine with Vagrant available on it. |
| Third-party DigitalOcean provider | On your workstation. | A separately installed Vagrant plugin manages Droplets through DigitalOcean. | You specifically want local Vagrant commands to create and manage cloud Droplets. Current compatibility must be verified. |
The walkthrough below starts with the Marketplace route because DigitalOcean documents its deployment path. It does not configure a local Vagrant provider. If your aim is a local project that provisions a Droplet, use the alternative route later in this guide.
Prepare Vagrant and your DigitalOcean access
Install Vagrant
Install Vagrant using HashiCorp’s platform-specific installation instructions. The getting-started installation tutorial also describes its setup prerequisites. HashiCorp’s starter project tutorial demonstrates the general initialize, start, connect, and manage workflow with a local VirtualBox provider; it is not evidence that a DigitalOcean provider is installed or configured on your machine.

Protect API credentials
If you create a Droplet through the API, use an access token with the permission needed for that operation. DigitalOcean specifies droplet:create for POST /v2/droplets in its Droplet API documentation. Keep the token in a secure secret store or shell environment variable, never in a committed Vagrantfile, public repository, screenshot, or command output. Grant only the permissions needed for the intended work.
Route A: deploy the Vagrant 1-Click Droplet
Deploy through the control panel
- Open the DigitalOcean Marketplace Vagrant 1-Click App listing and follow its control-panel deployment flow.
- Choose a region and Droplet size appropriate for your development workload, and review the current configuration and charges in DigitalOcean before creating the resource. No fixed price is quoted here because the cost depends on the selected Droplet configuration and current offering.
- Wait for the Droplet to finish provisioning. Note its public IPv4 address and configure SSH access according to the Marketplace instructions.
- From your workstation, connect to the Droplet over SSH as root using the public IPv4 address, as the Marketplace description directs. For example, use
ssh root@DROPLET_IPV4, substituting the address DigitalOcean assigned. Do not treat this root login instruction as a general rule for Vagrant-managed Droplets created through another provider. - Once connected, use Vagrant on the Droplet. The Marketplace image supplies Vagrant there; the machine you SSH from does not thereby gain a DigitalOcean provider plugin.
Deploy through the API
DigitalOcean’s Marketplace documentation also gives an API example for creating a Droplet from the image value vagrant. It specifies a region and size and uses a bearer token. Adapt its request rather than guessing parameter values; the token must have droplet:create permission. Follow the current request format in the Marketplace listing and API reference. Store the token outside source-controlled files, such as in a shell variable, and avoid printing it into logs.
Use and clean up the remote environment
Run Vagrant commands from the SSH session on the Droplet, in the project directory containing its Vagrantfile. The Marketplace deployment is a cloud host on which Vagrant runs; it is not a local Vagrant project automatically managing that host. When the cloud machine is no longer needed, shut down or destroy resources using the controls appropriate to the deployed Droplet and confirm it is removed in DigitalOcean. Check the selected plan and region before provisioning so an idle resource does not continue to incur charges.

Route B: let local Vagrant manage DigitalOcean Droplets
The third-party project devopsgroup-io/vagrant-digitalocean describes a Vagrant provider plugin for creating and managing Droplets. Its documented invocation is vagrant up --provider=digital_ocean. In this route, you run commands locally, and the plugin talks to DigitalOcean to manage the cloud machine.
There is an important compatibility caveat: the repository’s listed compatibility tests only extend through 2020. That history does not establish compatibility with current Vagrant versions, DigitalOcean’s current API, or current plugin releases. Check the project’s current configuration instructions, releases, and issues before committing to this route. Exact current provider attributes are not established here, so do not copy an old example Vagrantfile as if its settings were verified for your setup.
Workflow for the provider route
- Install Vagrant on your workstation using HashiCorp’s installation instructions.
- Review the plugin project’s current instructions and install the provider plugin using the command and version it documents. Confirm Vagrant lists the plugin and that the documented provider name is
digital_oceanbefore attempting to start a machine. - Create a project directory and a
Vagrantfile. Configure the provider according to the current plugin documentation, including the image, region, Droplet size, SSH key, and any supported provisioner settings. Select a box compatible with this provider; boxes are not interchangeable across providers. - Supply the DigitalOcean token securely using the mechanism supported by the current plugin instructions. Do not paste a real token into the Vagrantfile or commit it to source control.
- From the project directory, run
vagrant up --provider=digital_ocean. Check the plugin output and DigitalOcean control panel to confirm that the expected Droplet was created. - Connect using the plugin’s documented SSH setup and verify the intended account and key work. The plugin repository lists
vagrant ssh, vagrant status, vagrant provision, vagrant halt, andvagrant destroyamong its supported commands; confirm their behavior against current project guidance before relying on them. - When finished, use the appropriate lifecycle command and verify the Droplet is gone in the DigitalOcean control panel. Stopping a machine and destroying it are different actions; check the current billing implications of the selected resource.
Provisioning and team repeatability
The Vagrantfile is the project’s machine definition. Keep reproducible configuration and provisioning steps in the project, but keep credentials and other secrets outside it. A teammate needs the appropriate Vagrant installation and the provider or remote access required by the chosen route; sharing a Vagrantfile alone does not grant DigitalOcean access or install a provider.

For general Vagrant workflow concepts, HashiCorp’s starter project tutorial demonstrates initializing a project with a named box, selecting a provider, starting with vagrant up, connecting with vagrant ssh, and managing machine state. Its example uses VirtualBox locally, so adapt the provider and box to the cloud route rather than treating its commands as a DigitalOcean-specific recipe.
Troubleshooting
Vagrant says the provider is missing
For the local-provider route, confirm the plugin installed successfully and that the provider name matches the plugin’s current documentation. HashiCorp explains that alternate providers must be installed separately; --provider selects an available provider, it does not install one.

The box is incompatible
Use a box built for the selected provider. A box intended for a different backend may not work. Check the box and provider pairing in the current project documentation before changing machine settings.

Droplet creation is denied
Check that the token is valid, supplied through the expected mechanism, and authorized for the requested action. API creation requires droplet:create; a missing permission can cause authorization failure even when the token itself exists.
SSH cannot connect
Confirm the Droplet has completed provisioning, use its current public IP, and verify that the SSH key and username match the route you chose. The Marketplace image’s root SSH instruction applies to that deployment, not necessarily to a Droplet created by the third-party provider.
The plugin breaks on a current installation
Do not assume the historical compatibility table proves current support. Check current Vagrant and plugin releases, project issues, and API support. If those do not establish a working combination, prefer a route whose current setup path you can verify rather than relying on old attributes or commands.

A Droplet remains after you stop work
Check its state in the DigitalOcean control panel and distinguish halting a Vagrant-managed machine from destroying the Droplet. Review the selected plan’s current billing terms and remove resources you no longer need.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a separate use case—keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel stream live—StreamNeo runs uploaded videos in the cloud rather than on your development Droplet. That is not a Vagrant feature and is not required for a cloud development environment. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
