For a stealth-first Astarion who hits hard at the start of combat, a strong all-purpose setup is Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7. It reaches Ranger’s Extra Attack at level 5, then builds on that opening-round focus with Assassin features. Choose Thief instead if you would rather have more bonus-action flexibility from turn to turn.
Why Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 works
This split keeps Astarion’s stealth-and-ambush identity while giving him a significant first-round focus. Gloom Stalker supports initiative and opening attacks; Assassin rewards catching enemies surprised. That combination is most effective when you can approach carefully, choose your position, and start combat on favorable terms.
The build is a recommendation, not a universal ranking. Its feel depends on party composition, difficulty, and whether an encounter gives you room to set up. Fights that begin without a chance to position or surprise enemies can make the Assassin side less dependable. Alcast’s Patch 8 guide describes the style as dependent on game mechanics and more challenging for beginners.

That guide recommends Persuasion and Sleight of Hand among Astarion’s skills. Dexterity is the primary listed attribute; the other values reflect the guide’s particular assumptions rather than a requirement for every party or play style.
Level-by-level progression
The following route reaches Ranger 5 before taking most of the Rogue levels. That timing matters because Ranger 5 is where this multiclass earns Extra Attack. Class features arrive at class-level thresholds, so levels spent in one class delay the next class’s features.

- Character level 1 — Rogue 1. Begin in Rogue.
- Character level 2 — Ranger 1. Start Ranger progression.
- Character level 3 — Ranger 2. Take Two-Weapon Fighting.
- Character level 4 — Ranger 3. Choose the Gloom Stalker subclass.
- Character level 5 — Ranger 4. Increase Dexterity, following the cited guide’s recommendation.
- Character level 6 — Ranger 5. Reach Extra Attack, the key Ranger milestone in this build.
- Character level 7 — Rogue 2. Resume Rogue progression.
- Character level 8 — Rogue 3. Choose the Assassin subclass.
- Character levels 9–12 — Rogue 4–7. Continue Rogue to complete the 5/7 split. At Rogue 4, the guide lists Alert or Savage Attacker as options.
If you want Ranger’s Extra Attack as soon as this multiclass allows, follow the Ranger 5 milestone before adding more Rogue levels. The cited route starts with Rogue 1, then prioritizes Ranger through level 5.
How to play the build
- Scout and position. Use stealth to approach and take a favorable position before a suitable encounter begins.
- Look for a surprise opening. Assassin’s benefits are most relevant when enemies are surprised, so the opening is stronger when you can initiate on your terms.
- Capitalize on the first round. The Gloom Stalker/Assassin pairing is designed around initiative and opening attacks; use that advantage before settling into the rest of the fight.
- Adjust when setup is impossible. If combat starts without an opportunity to position or surprise enemies, do not expect the build’s opening-round strengths to show up as reliably.
Assassin or Thief?
Both are viable Rogue choices for the Ranger setup. Choose according to which part of combat you want to emphasize:

PC Gamer presents Thief as a possible replacement for Assassin but favors Assassin for this particular stealth-oriented opening. The available guides do not establish one subclass as best for every player.
Gear to look for in-game
The cited build guide names the Knife of the Undermountain King as a useful weapon for much of the campaign. For late-game piercing vulnerability, it also points to Bhaalist Armor or the Bloodthirst dagger. Access to Bhaalist Armor may depend on a consequential story choice. These are in-game items, not required external purchases.

Patch and platform context
The build recommendations come from Patch 8 guides: PC Gamer’s was updated September 9, 2026, and Alcast’s August 7, 2026. Larian describes Patch 8 as Baldur’s Gate 3’s “final major patch” and lists cross-play among PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. That does not rule out later minor hotfixes or platform-specific differences.
Larian’s Patch 5 notes, dated November 30, 2023, document Honour Mode and a fix to Assassin’s Alacrity that restores the Assassin’s action on the first combat turn. Those notes are historical context rather than a guarantee about every later build or hotfix.
