Minecraft’s The Copper Age game drop released on September 30, 2025, for both Java and Bedrock editions. It adds copper equipment and building items, copper golems and their sorting system, and shelves with inventory shortcuts, alongside smaller changes. The Java release is version 1.21.9; the Bedrock release is 1.21.111.
When did The Copper Age update come out?
Minecraft announced, “The Copper Age releases on September 30th,” in its Minecraft LIVE September 2025 recap. The Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111 release notes are both dated September 30, 2025. Minecraft describes The Copper Age as its third game drop of 2025 and says players should update Minecraft to the latest version to receive it. The official game-drop overview confirms availability on both editions.

What’s in The Copper Age update?
The drop makes copper useful for more than construction. It adds copper tools, weapons, armor, horse armor, nuggets, torches, lanterns, bars and chains. Copper tools sit between stone and iron in several practical respects in Java, but the exact comparison depends on the item; consult the Java Edition 1.21.9 notes for those details rather than treating all copper equipment as having one shared statistic.
Copper golems sort items
Build a copper golem by placing a carved pumpkin or jack-o’-lantern on copper, as described in the official feature overview. The golem takes items from copper chests and attempts to deposit them into normal or trapped chests that are empty or already contain the same item type. This is a basic item-sorting system: it can move matching items between containers, but it does not replace a player-designed storage system.

Java’s 1.21.9 notes specify that a golem can carry up to 16 items at a time, check up to 10 chests in sequence, and search within 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically. If it cannot find a matching chest, it idles for seven seconds. Treat those figures as Java-specific; Bedrock’s rules should be checked in its 1.21.111 notes.
Copper chests provide the source items
A copper chest is the golem’s source container. It oxidizes over time and can be waxed. In Java, the chest is crafted with one chest and eight copper ingots; the Java notes give the crafting and oxidation details.

Shelves display items and can swap hotbar slots
Shelves hold and display up to three item stacks. When connected shelves are powered by redstone, they can swap their displayed contents with the rightmost slots of the player’s hotbar. Java’s notes specify the scale: one shelf swaps three slots, two connected shelves swap six, and three connected shelves swap the entire hotbar. Check the Bedrock notes for that edition’s documented behavior.
What else changed?
The Copper Age is not limited to copper items. Java’s 1.21.9 notes also list End skylight flashes, chat drafts, sound previews for settings sliders, mannequins, server-management features and Halychian language support. The complete Java list is in the Java Edition release notes.

Are Java and Bedrock versions the same?
Both editions received the drop on September 30, 2025, and share the core concepts: copper equipment, copper golems, copper chests and shelves. Their release identifiers differ, and technical behavior should not be assumed identical. For platform-specific crafting, equipment stats, golem searching, shelf interactions and other changes, use the official Java 1.21.9 and Bedrock 1.21.111 notes.
