The reports describe specific venues, not a typical response at every screening.
What is a chicken jockey?
In Minecraft, a chicken jockey is a rare mob: a baby zombie riding a chicken. In the film, Jack Black’s character says “Chicken Jockey” when the creature appears, giving audiences a brief, recognizable moment to react to. ABC News and Good Morning America described the game reference and the scene.
What happened at reported screenings?
Accounts ranged from cheering to conduct that disrupted other moviegoers or damaged theater property. These are reported incidents, not evidence that most showings became chaotic.
Australia: a paused screening and a separate police call
ABC News reported that at a screening in Forest Hill, Victoria, audience members threw popcorn, toilet paper, flour, mop signs, and a bin for 3D glasses during the scene. An attendee said the manager paused the film and security was called; she also said people who had not joined in received refunds and complimentary tickets.

ABC separately reported a police call to a cinema in Erina, New South Wales, after an alleged altercation involving two adult men and two 14-year-old boys. Brisbane Water Police told ABC that the matter related to people “throwing popcorn” and that officers were still looking into it when the article was published. The Erina report is a separate incident from the Forest Hill screening, not evidence that police routinely attended showings. ABC News’ April 2025 account also quoted Palace Cinemas chief executive Benjamin Zeccola on the operational consequences: extra staff and cleanup time, and a screen needing replacement after drinks were thrown. Zeccola estimated that replacement at $50,000; that was his estimate for a particular damaged screen, not an industry-wide repair benchmark.
United States: venue-specific rules and appeals
Good Morning America reported that Township Theatre in Washington Township, New Jersey, required minors to attend with an adult after reporting vandalism and complaints from families. The report also reproduced a warning from Megaplex that disruptive patrons could be removed by police and charged for damage. Those were measures and warnings from particular venues, not a general cinema policy. Good Morning America

In Florida, ClickOrlando reported that Oviedo Mall management asked patrons to respect the theater, its staff, and other viewers, including parents bringing or dropping off children. The report also said Regal planned a special Chicken Jockey viewing day at participating locations on April 20, 2025. That date has passed; it was a scheduled event, not a current offer. ClickOrlando
Why did people yell “Chicken Jockey”?
The scene supplied a short, recognizable cue, and social posts and reaction videos helped circulate the behavior. But the available reporting does not establish one definitive origin, explain every participant’s motive, or measure what share of screenings saw disruptions.

ABC quoted filmmaker Jamie Tram suggesting that some people might want to record reactions for social media. Film critic Luke Goodsell said, “Social media is fuelling it,” offering an interpretation rather than a verified account of how the trend began. ABC Radio National’s The Screen Show host Jason DiRosso cautioned: “It’s hard to know why they’re doing it.” ABC also reported that a TikTok video connected to the trend had more than 4.3 million views at the time of its April 2025 article; that historical view count is not a current total or a measure of how many viewers took part. What did the director say?
Director Jared Hess said, “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” and said he was glad people were making memories with friends and families. Good Morning America reported these remarks from Hess’s interview with Entertainment Weekly. His positive reaction to shared excitement is not an endorsement of property damage or disrupting a screening. Good Morning America

Where is the line between cheering and disruption?
A brief cheer can be a communal response; throwing objects, damaging property, interrupting the film, or preventing other people from watching changes the experience for everyone else. Palace Cinemas’ Zeccola described the collective reaction as “quite hilarious” and “pretty innocent fun,” while also discussing added cleanup and a damaged screen. The contrasting reports show why a lively audience response and disruptive conduct should not be treated as the same thing. ABC News
