Fable III’s Windows PC edition is a legacy release, not a PC version currently shown for sale by Microsoft. Calling it “abandonware” is informal, not a legal determination. Resale listings do not guarantee that a disc or key can still be activated, and the available price records do not support the claim that ordinary PC copies routinely sell for hundreds.
Is Fable III still available on PC?
Microsoft’s current Fable III store listing is for Xbox, not a current Windows PC release. The original PC edition is associated with Games for Windows Live. A historical Steam Community discussion reports that the PC product became unavailable amid the service shutdown and related key issues; that discussion is not a current Microsoft support notice.
Microsoft announced an Xbox backward-compatibility program on PC in July 2026, initially in early release with four original Xbox games. The announcement does not name Fable III, and it does not establish that the old Windows port is playable through that program. Microsoft’s announcement is about selected Xbox games on PC, not a return of Fable III as a native PC product.
Can you play the PC version on Windows 11?
The available sources do not verify a tested method for running the legacy PC edition on Windows 11. A listing for a disc or key is not proof that installation, activation, or online features will work on a modern PC. Because the historical edition was tied to Games for Windows Live, treat activation and service dependence as risks to check before paying rather than assuming a newly purchased key restores access.

What do resale prices actually show?
PriceCharting’s Fable III PC price-history page shows reported completed-sale examples dated May through July 2026 at approximately $10–$43. That is a small set of examples, not a representative market average or a guarantee of current prices. The page also shows a sealed-copy listing at $189.95; that is an asking price, not evidence the copy sold for that amount. These records do not support saying ordinary PC copies or keys generally sell for hundreds. See PriceCharting’s PC price history.
That same page does not establish current digital-key availability, seller legitimacy, or whether any key will redeem. Do not treat a key offer as a reliable way to regain access unless the seller and activation conditions can be independently verified.

How the PC and Xbox options differ
| Option | What the evidence supports | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC disc or key | Legacy PC edition associated with Games for Windows Live; not shown as a current Microsoft PC-store product. | Current activation and Windows 11 operation are not verified. |
| Xbox 360 physical disc | A separate console edition. PriceCharting shows 2026 examples of Xbox 360 physical-copy sales below $12; these are observations, not a price forecast. | Check the exact Xbox model, disc drive, region, and current compatibility information before buying. PriceCharting’s Xbox 360 price history. |
| Official Xbox listing | Microsoft lists Fable III as an Xbox product, not as a Windows PC release. | Check current availability and the specific console or account conditions on the Xbox listing. |
Can an Xbox 360 disc work on a newer Xbox?
Microsoft says selected Xbox 360 titles are playable on Xbox One through backward compatibility, conditional on the game appearing in the compatible-games catalog. Check the current title listing and your exact console before buying; this does not mean every Xbox model accepts every disc edition. Microsoft’s support page explains the limits: backward-compatible games on Xbox One.
Do not assume the Xbox 360 disc can be converted into a digital entitlement. Microsoft’s August 2026 announcement describes disc-to-digital entitlements for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles, while the related digital goods usage rules limit eligibility to supported games. Neither source says Fable III’s Xbox 360 disc qualifies.

What to check before paying
- For a PC disc: Confirm the item is the Windows edition, not an Xbox copy, and ask the seller what evidence they have that installation and activation work. A disc listing alone does not resolve modern compatibility.
- For a digital key: Confirm the platform, region, redemption route, and refund terms. Current redemption was not verified, so a seller’s claim that a key works should not be treated as established fact.
- For an Xbox 360 disc: Check disc condition and verify compatibility with the exact console and edition. Do not infer compatibility from the existence of a general backward-compatibility program.
- For any collectible listing: Distinguish a completed sale from an asking price, and compare condition. A sealed-copy listing does not set the value of a used copy.
