The April 2, 2025 date in the original “Switch 2 preorder date just tipped” story was a pre-release prediction, not Nintendo’s final schedule. Nintendo later announced that North American preorders at participating retailers would begin April 9, 2025, ahead of the console’s June 5, 2025 launch. Those dates have passed; this is a look back at what was reported and what Nintendo ultimately confirmed, not a current availability alert.
What preorder date was tipped?
On March 25, 2025, Tom’s Guide reported that restock tracker Matt Swider expected Nintendo Switch 2 preorders to begin Wednesday, April 2, at 10 a.m. ET. The article said Swider thought Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, and Target would open orders at that time. That was a forecast attributed to Swider, not an official Nintendo announcement or confirmation that every retailer would open simultaneously. Tom’s Guide’s original report
Tom’s Guide added an update on March 27 saying Best Buy Canada had confirmed April 2. That was a retailer-specific report and was subsequently overtaken by Nintendo’s later North American preorder schedule. The report also floated a $399 price and discussed a possible launch month as speculation; neither should be treated as an official detail from that article.

Preorder and release timing differed by territory. Nintendo’s Japanese announcement specifies Japanese system versions and yen pricing, and lists release territories including Japan, North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia excluding Mainland China. How did the preorder and launch unfold?
- March 25, 2025: Tom’s Guide relayed Swider’s prediction of April 2 at 10 a.m. ET.
- March 27, 2025: Tom’s Guide added that Best Buy Canada had confirmed April 2.
- April 2, 2025: Nintendo announced April 9 as the North American preorder start at participating retailers and June 5 as the launch date.
- April 24, 2025: Target said its Target.com preorder allocation sold out in less than two hours. That describes Target’s own online allocation, not preorder demand across all retailers. Target’s preorder and launch-day statement
- June 5, 2025: The system launched. Target said stores would sell systems that day; its Target.com and app sales were planned for June 6, while supplies lasted. Those were launch-era plans, not a guarantee of current stock.

The dates above answer when preorders were scheduled and when the console launched; they do not establish present-day stock, prices, or delivery dates. Check retailers directly for current listings and availability. When comparing offers, verify the region and language model, whether a game or other item is included, the total price, delivery or pickup timing, return terms, and whether the seller is the retailer or a third party. What should buyers know about compatibility and storage?
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible original Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a specific game rather than assuming every original Switch title works identically.
