To reduce Azure bandwidth costs for a continuous YouTube stream, first confirm that outbound data transfer is the charge driving your bill, then reduce unnecessary stream bitrate or duplicate transmissions without sacrificing stability. A smaller VM can lower its network throughput ceiling, but it does not directly lower the number of gigabytes your stream sends.
What Azure charges for a continuous stream
Azure VM bandwidth charges are based on the amount of data transferred; outbound traffic from Azure to an external destination may incur data transfer fees. A VM’s size sets a network-throughput limit, including for outbound traffic, but that limit is a capacity ceiling—not the billable volume. Reducing the VM size alone will not reduce egress GB if the stream continues sending the same encoded video. Microsoft’s VM size guidance describes the throughput limits. [c001][c002]
For planning, a sustained 1 Mbps stream transfers roughly 0.45 GB per hour using decimal units. Estimate GB as Mbps × seconds ÷ 8,000, or use Mbps × 0.45 for an hourly estimate. This is a volume calculation, not an Azure price. Add audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and any other active feeds; then reconcile the estimate against Azure usage records. [c001]
Find the bandwidth meter before changing settings
- Open Cost Analysis. Choose the billing period that covers the continuous stream and inspect costs by service, resource and meter. Microsoft’s older interface guidance points to Cost Analysis and bandwidth-related meters, but Azure labels can change; use the meter details shown for your subscription. [c005]
- Confirm attribution. Check whether the relevant bandwidth charge is associated with the VM and whether it is a significant share of the bill. Do not assume every bandwidth line item comes from the stream.
- Record a baseline. Note the period, region, resource, meter, measured outbound volume and stream runtime. This lets you distinguish a real reduction from billing-period or workload changes.
Without your Azure region, offer, measured usage and confirmed meter, it is not possible to give a reliable dollar estimate or savings percentage. Rates depend on pricing context. Use the Azure pricing calculator for a forecast and compare it with the subscription’s actual Cost Analysis meter. [c005]

Reduce the stream’s outbound data without guessing
Measure what is actually being sent
Check the encoder’s configured bitrate and the stream’s actual outbound rate over representative periods. If two encoders, a primary and backup feed, or separate streams transmit concurrently, count each active feed. A backup that is only configured but not transmitting does not contribute the same continuous volume as one that is actively sending.
Choose an appropriate YouTube ingest bitrate
YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrate varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. On the YouTube Help page accessed October 4, 2026, H.264 at 1080p30 is recommended at 14 Mbps, compared with 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 720p30, the recommendations are 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are recommendations, not universal minimum requirements. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into playback formats, so an unnecessarily high source bitrate may add outbound volume without being needed for the quality you want. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table before changing the encoder. [c003]

Select the resolution, frame rate and codec for the actual content. Fast motion may need more bitrate than a mostly static scene; evaluate representative motion and audio rather than judging from a quiet segment. Lower one setting at a time, test stream quality and stability, and compare the resulting measured volume. A bitrate reduction trades image detail or motion clarity for lower transfer volume, so the lowest setting is not automatically the best setting.
Keep capacity headroom
YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and advises accounting for the bitrate of both primary and backup streams when planning capacity. This guidance is about upload capacity and reliability, not a discount on Azure transfer. Preserve enough throughput for the configured stream and any concurrently transmitting backup; monitor stream health after a change. [c004]

Should you resize the Azure VM?
Do not resize solely to chase bandwidth savings. A smaller VM can have a lower outbound throughput limit, but that does not itself reduce the encoded bytes sent or the billable transfer volume. Resize when CPU, memory or VM compute cost supports the change, and confirm the new SKU can sustain the chosen stream bitrate with headroom. If the VM cannot keep up, the result may be instability rather than a lower bandwidth bill. [c001][c002]
Check whether a transfer policy applies
Azure’s at-cost transfer policy is limited to qualifying customers in the EEA, EFTA or UK and specific qualifying transfers to another provider. It is not a general discount for ordinary YouTube or CDN delivery; the cited policy excludes CDN delivery. Do not assume it applies to a YouTube stream. Verify eligibility and any Azure support-approved arrangement for your specific route and account. [c001][c005]

A practical cost-control checklist
- Identify the exact bandwidth meter and confirm the stream is a material contributor.
- Measure bitrate, runtime and concurrent feeds; estimate volume, then validate it against Azure usage.
- Use YouTube’s codec-, resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations as a starting point, not as a one-size-fits-all rule.
- Test quality and stability after bitrate changes, keeping YouTube’s recommended capacity headroom.
- Resize the VM only for compute or VM-cost reasons, while staying within its outbound throughput capacity.
- Forecast with the Azure pricing calculator and confirm against your actual regional subscription charges.
