In OBS Studio, keep the Yoga Nidra program in one scene and build a separate break scene with a calm background and countdown. Use Studio Mode or a scene hotkey to switch manually, or configure a timer script to switch when the countdown expires. Rehearse the full countdown-to-break-to-return cycle before relying on it in a continuous stream.
Choose how the countdown will appear
There are two practical options: play a prepared countdown video, or use a timer source or script. The right choice depends on whether you need the countdown to repeat as media or want it to trigger a scene change automatically.
Use a countdown video when you want predictable playback
Add the local countdown clip to OBS as a Media Source. Media Source supports common local video and audio formats. Its Loop option is off by default, so enable Loop if the clip should repeat. A looping clip can provide a repeating visual timer, but test the clip’s duration and the moment it restarts so the display fits your intended break.
Use a timer when expiry should trigger a change
An OBS timer script can be configured with an expiry action, such as cycling scenes or sources. The precise setup depends on the script and its version. A timer resource’s version 5.8 update, dated February 15, 2024, describes countdown mode and expiry actions; follow that resource’s configuration instructions for the version you install rather than assuming every timer script behaves the same way.

Build the Yoga Nidra and break scenes
- Create the program scene. In OBS, add or arrange the sources that make up your Yoga Nidra program in one scene. Keep this separate from the break layout so you can switch back to the program without rebuilding the screen.
- Create a separate break scene. Add a new scene and give it a clear name, such as “Break.” OBS scenes are layouts made from sources; the OBS overview itself uses “Break” as an example scene name.
- Add a background. In the break scene, add an Image source for a calm background. Size and position it to fill the canvas.
- Add the countdown or message. Place a text source or a prepared transparent text graphic over the background. If you use a countdown video, add it as a Media Source and arrange it in the source order so it appears above the background.
- Check source order and framing. Make sure the background does not cover the text or timer. Confirm that the countdown is legible in the final stream layout, not just in a cropped preview.
The OBS Project’s BRB-scene tutorial describes the same basic construction: a separate scene, a background image, and an overlay. A simple image and text overlay are enough for a functional break screen.
Choose how to switch between scenes
Manual switching with Studio Mode
Studio Mode lets you prepare the next scene before transitioning it to the live output. Select the break scene in the preview, check that its background and countdown look right, then transition when the program reaches the break. Use the same preview-and-transition process to return to the Yoga Nidra scene.

Manual switching with a scene hotkey
OBS hotkeys can switch to a specific scene. Assign a hotkey to the break scene and another to the program scene if you want direct switching without preparing a preview. Choose keys that are unlikely to be pressed accidentally, and test both while watching the live output.
Automatic switching with a timer script
Configure the timer script’s expiry action to change to the break scene, then arrange a return to the program scene at the end of the break. Some timer resources can start from conditions such as streaming starting, a selected scene becoming active, or a timer text source becoming visible. These are script-specific options, not built-in guarantees across all OBS installations.

Pay particular attention to the script’s scene and source lists. The timer resource’s version 5.8 notes, dated February 15, 2024, say that some expiry lists require source or scene names to be entered manually, and warn that a list containing only one source or scene will not reset the timer. Verify those behaviors against the installed script version and test the exact configuration you plan to use.
Rehearse a complete cycle before going live
OBS recommends testing scene configuration and stream behavior before a live session. Run the whole interval, rather than checking only that each scene exists.

- Start the countdown at the intended point in the program and confirm it begins at the correct value.
- Check that the break scene appears when the countdown ends, whether the change is manual or automated.
- Confirm the Yoga Nidra media behaves as intended when you switch scenes and when you return. Do not assume scene changes will produce the timing you want without testing.
- Make sure the return transition is clear and the program scene is active afterward.
- If using a script, test its start condition and expiry action, including what happens if you change scenes or restart the stream.
- If using a looping countdown clip, check that its restart point does not create an unexpected blank, jump, or misleading timer.
Common problems and fixes
- The countdown video plays once and stops: Media Source’s Loop property is off by default. Enable Loop if you need repeat playback.
- The timer expires but the scene does not change: Check the script’s expiry action and confirm its scene or source names match the configured items. Script behavior and configuration vary by version.
- The timer runs but does not reset: Check whether the script’s expiry list has only one source or scene. The version 5.8 timer resource notes that a one-item list will not reset the timer.
- The break screen appears, but the overlay is hidden: Review the break scene’s source order and ensure the text or countdown is above the background image.
- The stream returns to the wrong scene: Test the full return path and confirm the manual hotkey or automated expiry action targets the Yoga Nidra program scene.
- A community plugin or script does not match current OBS: Treat community recommendations as version-dependent. A 2019 forum reply suggested separate scenes with their own timers and a scene-switcher plugin, but that suggestion is not confirmation of current compatibility. Verify the current OBS and plugin releases and rehearse before depending on them.
