Set the thumbnail in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, in the details or settings for the scheduled stream. Verify the channel first, upload an image you have the rights to use, save it, then reopen the stream details or watch page to confirm the change. YouTube may take time to display an updated thumbnail.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
- YouTube requires a verified account to use custom thumbnails. See YouTube’s custom thumbnail instructions.
- Live streaming has separate requirements: the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Prepare an image you are entitled to use. For an Indian music stream, that could be an authorized performer photo, instruments, or artwork that accurately represents the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
How to change a scheduled live stream thumbnail
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. If the broadcast has not started, use Manage to find the scheduled stream or create one. YouTube lets you set stream details while creating or scheduling a stream and edit them later in stream settings. The labels can vary as Studio changes; see Manage live stream settings.
- Open the stream’s details or editing view. Select the scheduled broadcast and locate its thumbnail area. For a live stream, make the change in the Live Control Room or stream settings rather than assuming the general video list offers the same route for every account.
- Upload and save. Choose the thumbnail upload option, select the prepared image, and save the stream details. YouTube’s general video workflow is Content → select the video → Thumbnail → Upload file → Save; the live-stream editor is accessed through the stream’s controls. - Confirm the result. Reopen the stream’s details or its watch page. A saved change may not appear immediately, so allow time for it to update.
What size and format should the thumbnail be?
YouTube’s current video-thumbnail guidance recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, in JPG or PNG format. The stated upload limit is 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB for video thumbnails on mobile; the limit depends on the upload device. Check YouTube’s current thumbnail help page before exporting, since platform specifications can change.
For a music broadcast, keep any title text readable in a small preview and make sure the image does not imply a performer, song, or event that is not actually part of the stream. These are practical design considerations, not additional YouTube technical requirements.
Set and verify the thumbnail before going live
Set the thumbnail while the stream is scheduled, then verify it before starting. YouTube’s help explains how to create, schedule, and edit stream metadata, but does not establish that every account can change the thumbnail in the same way during an active broadcast. Avoid relying on an in-progress edit for a stream that must start with the right artwork.

- Open the stream in Live Control Room and review its details and thumbnail.
- If you are broadcasting with an encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that the intended stream is receiving video and audio before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend arranging the encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event, previewing, checking stream accessibility, and monitoring audio and video. Those timings are event guidance and may not fit every continuous-stream setup.
Thumbnail rules and 24/7 stream limitations
The thumbnail does not keep a broadcast running or determine whether its archive will be available. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a single 24-hour stream will be archived as one video. For continuous operation, check YouTube’s current limits and archive behavior separately, and plan for music rights, encoder continuity, power, network backup, and monitoring. YouTube may reject thumbnails that violate its policies, including imagery involving nudity or sexual content, hate speech, violence, or harmful and dangerous content. Repeat offenses can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or lead to account termination, according to YouTube’s thumbnail guidance. Make sure artwork is both policy-compliant and cleared for use.
