To show podcast cover art inside your YouTube live video, add it to your OBS scene as an Image source. Then place and resize it in the preview, keeping it above the background in the Sources list. This changes the broadcast picture; it does not set the separate thumbnail viewers see on YouTube.
Choose where the cover should appear
There are two different ways podcast artwork can accompany a YouTube live stream:
- In the live video: Add the image as an OBS source. Viewers see it as part of the broadcast output, wherever you position it in the scene.
- As the YouTube thumbnail: Set the thumbnail in the stream’s YouTube settings. This is separate from the OBS video picture, so adding an image source will not change it.
You can use either placement or both. OBS scenes are built from sources, including still images and slideshows; the OBS Sources Guide explains how sources form a scene.
Add the cover as an OBS image source
- Select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene you intend to use for the YouTube broadcast.
- Add the image. At the bottom of the Sources dock, click +, choose Image, and select the cover artwork file on your computer.
- Set the layer order. In the Sources list, place the cover source above the background source if the cover should appear over it. Sources higher in the list can appear on top of sources below them, or hide content beneath them.
- Position and size it. Select the cover in the scene preview and drag it into place. Use the red bounding-box handles to resize it. For more precise placement, use Edit Transform. Use Fit to Screen only if that is the composition you want.
- Check the composition. Make sure the cover is not obscuring content you want visible. Square artwork may look distorted if stretched to fill a differently shaped canvas; resize it proportionally and inspect the result in the preview.
The OBS guide does not specify an overlay resolution or file-size limit. YouTube’s thumbnail image requirements are not requirements for an OBS source.

Connect OBS to YouTube and check the preview
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or select the stream.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube lists OBS as encoder software and describes this setup in its encoder setup guide.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in the broadcast or include it in screenshots.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then check the cover’s position along with the audio and video before clicking Go live.

Set a separate YouTube thumbnail if needed
If you also want artwork associated with the stream as its YouTube preview image, use the thumbnail control in the stream’s YouTube settings. YouTube’s guidance for podcast playlist thumbnails recommends a 1:1 aspect ratio and lists a 50 MB maximum upload size for desktop. Those figures concern podcast thumbnails, not OBS image sources. Troubleshoot common image issues
- The cover does not appear: Confirm the correct scene is selected and that the image source is enabled and above the background in the Sources list.
- The cover is behind another element: Move its source higher in the list so it layers over that element.
- The artwork looks stretched: Avoid stretching a square cover to fill a differently shaped canvas. Resize it proportionally and check the preview.
- The cover is missing from YouTube’s preview: Check the OBS scene preview first, then confirm OBS is sending to the selected YouTube stream and wait for its feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- The YouTube preview image is unchanged: An OBS image source affects the video feed, not the separate YouTube thumbnail setting. Update the thumbnail in YouTube’s stream settings if that is what you want to change.
