Can an M2 MacBook Air Run a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop?

An M2 MacBook Air has relevant video hardware, but sustained 4K60 streaming depends on OBS settings, source quality, upload stability, and testing.

Yes, it is plausible—with the right source, encoder settings, and a stable upload connection, an M2 MacBook Air can be configured to send a looping 4K 60fps video to YouTube Live. Apple lists video encode and decode engines in the 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022), and OBS documents both looping a local media file and using Apple VideoToolbox for H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon. But those specifications do not certify sustained 4K60 performance on every M2 Air configuration. Test the complete setup before relying on it.

What “run a 4K 60fps live loop” involves

This means OBS plays a prerecorded video file on the Mac, repeats it when it ends, encodes the video as a live feed, and sends that feed to YouTube. It is more demanding than watching a 4K YouTube video because the Mac must process and upload a live stream continuously.

Apple’s specifications for the 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022) list hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, along with video decode and encode engines. Its built-in display is 2560 × 1664, but that does not cap the resolution sent to YouTube: display resolution and stream output resolution are separate settings. Apple lists support for one external display up to 6K at 60Hz, which describes display connectivity, not a limit on stream output. Apple’s M2 MacBook Air technical specifications apply specifically to the 13-inch 2022 model.

Set up the loop in OBS

  1. Add the video: In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local video file. Enable the source’s Loop option so playback restarts when the file ends. Enable hardware decoding if it is available and useful for the video’s format. OBS’s media-source controls can vary by version, so check the labels in the version you have installed. OBS: Media Sources.
  2. Choose an encoder: Use a streaming encoder documented for Apple Silicon, such as H.264 with Apple VideoToolbox. OBS says VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon and supports H.264 streaming. YouTube accepts other codecs too, but that does not establish that OBS exposes every YouTube-supported codec through this Mac’s hardware encoder. OBS: Hardware Encoding.
  3. Set the video output: Set the stream output to 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps only if the source file and your setup support those settings. A 4K60 output setting cannot restore detail or smoothness that is absent from the source.
  4. Configure the YouTube ingest: YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds (do not exceed 4 seconds). Match the encoder’s settings to the codec you choose and YouTube’s published guidance. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Connect OBS to the event: Create or schedule a YouTube Live event, then enter its stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or include it in a public screenshot. Start with an unlisted test if you do not want the trial run publicly visible.

Choose a bitrate YouTube can receive

YouTube’s 4K/2160p 60fps bitrate recommendations depend on the codec. The figures below are encoder bitrate settings, not a promise that a particular internet plan will sustain a live stream.

Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s 4K/2160p at 60fps settings, accessed in 2026; check the linked guidance before going live because platform settings can change. OBS’s cited Apple Silicon guidance directly confirms H.264 streaming, not that every listed codec is available as an OBS hardware-encoding choice on the M2 Air.

Your connection needs upload capacity above the selected stream bitrate, with extra room for network variation and overhead. Test the actual upload path rather than treating a nominal internet-plan speed as a guarantee. YouTube’s separate recommendation of 20 Mbps sustained speed is for watching 4K UHD, not for uploading a 4K60 live stream. YouTube: System requirements.

Test before using the stream publicly

  1. Start an unlisted test at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview for the correct picture, smooth motion, and audio. Let the file reach its end and confirm OBS starts it again without a gap or interruption.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators while the test runs. A successful short test is useful, but it does not establish that the same setup will remain stable indefinitely.
  4. If the stream is unhealthy, lower the bitrate first if upload capacity is the constraint. If that does not resolve the problem, reduce output resolution or frame rate and test again. Choose the highest setting that remains healthy for the duration you need.

YouTube recommends testing before going live, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. It also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance and YouTube: Monitor your live stream.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS cannot keep the stream healthy: The selected bitrate may be too demanding for the upload connection, or the connection may fluctuate. Test upload performance and lower the bitrate or output settings until stream health stabilizes.
  • The picture looks soft despite a 4K output setting: Confirm the source file is actually 4K and that OBS is configured to output 3840 × 2160. Output settings cannot add source detail.
  • The loop stops at the end of the video: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. Test a complete playback cycle before the public stream.
  • YouTube does not accept the feed: Check the stream key, selected ingest protocol, codec, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against the current YouTube guidance. Keep the stream key private.
  • The live event is not ready to receive the feed: Verify that the correct YouTube event is selected and available, then restart the test after correcting its event or encoder settings.

Copyright and reused-video considerations

A technically successful loop is not automatically cleared for public streaming. Use video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before streaming. Repeating a prerecorded file is also distinct from producing a camera-based live broadcast; do not assume that a loop alone satisfies any separate YouTube monetization or reused-content requirements. The available encoder and device specifications do not establish how YouTube will assess an individual channel or video.
