You can stream from Raspberry Pi OS Lite to YouTube by installing FFmpeg, choosing the right input for your camera or video source, and sending an H.264 stream to the ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval as your starting settings. The Pi model, encoder available in your FFmpeg build, and stable upload speed at the actual streaming location determine which resolution and bitrate are practical.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS Lite with command-line or SSH access. Lite is the command-line-only OS option intended for headless setups; the current download information identifies the 64-bit release as Debian Trixie-based, dated 15 September 2026. Check the current download page when choosing an image because releases change. Raspberry Pi OS downloads
- A working video source: a Raspberry Pi camera, USB camera, network stream, or prerecorded file. The input syntax and timing differ by source.
- A YouTube channel able to use Live Control Room, plus the ingest URL/protocol and stream key displayed for your broadcast.
- A wired or wireless connection whose sustained upload capacity has been measured where the Pi will run, ideally at the time of day you plan to stream. India’s title context does not imply a particular ISP or upload speed.
Keep the Pi powered and network-connected for the entire DIY broadcast. This workflow sends one encoded feed to YouTube; it does not create a camera-based broadcast from a prerecorded file unless you explicitly choose that input.
Install FFmpeg and check what your Pi can encode
- Update Raspberry Pi OS. In a terminal or SSH session, run
sudo apt updatefollowed bysudo apt full-upgrade. Review package prompts before confirming. - Install FFmpeg. Run
sudo apt install ffmpeg. The exact package version and codec options depend on the OS repository and image installed. - Inspect the local build. Run
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -encoders. Check whether the encoder you intend to use is actually listed; do not assume a hardware H.264 encoder exists in every Pi model or FFmpeg build. - For a Pi camera, inspect rpicam tools. Raspberry Pi OS Lite includes
rpicam-apps-lite, and Raspberry Pi documentsrpicam-vidfor camera capture. Runrpicam-vid --helpto see options supported by your installed version. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation
Raspberry Pi documents that rpicam-vid uses hardware H.264 encoding when available, and its FFmpeg/libav backend can encode audio and video. Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders; its documentation says --low-latency reduces encoding latency at some cost to coding efficiency, multicore use, and potentially maximum frame rate. It says 1080p30 remains readily achievable in that documented context, not that every FFmpeg pipeline or Raspberry Pi 5 workload will sustain it. Measure your own setup.
Choose the input path
Raspberry Pi camera
Use Raspberry Pi’s camera application to capture, then pass its output into the FFmpeg workflow appropriate to your installed tools. The rpicam-vid FFmpeg/libav backend and command-line options vary with version and hardware, so consult rpicam-vid --help and the official camera documentation rather than pasting a command intended for a different release. Confirm whether capture is already producing H.264 and whether the output can be handed to FFmpeg without another encode.

USB camera
A USB camera is typically presented as a video device, but device names, supported formats, and frame rates vary. Identify the device and supported modes on your system before constructing an FFmpeg input. A camera’s advertised maximum mode is not proof that the Pi can capture, encode, and transmit it continuously.
RTSP or another network source
Use the network source’s actual URL and authentication details as the input. Confirm that the Pi can receive it steadily and that its codec and timestamps are suitable for the chosen output path. Network interruptions upstream can stop or stall the feed even if YouTube ingest remains available.

Prerecorded video
A file is not a live capture device. FFmpeg’s -re option is commonly used to read prerecorded media at its native rate so it is not sent as fast as possible; live capture inputs generally provide their own real-time pacing. Check the input’s video/audio codecs, frame rate, timestamps, and duration before deciding whether to copy or encode.
Set YouTube ingest and encoder parameters
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the currently displayed ingest URL/protocol and stream key; account settings and labels can vary. YouTube recommends RTMPS, described as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Use the RTMPS ingest destination and stream key provided for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or shared script. Avoid leaving it in shell history; use a protected configuration or enter it in a way that limits exposure.
- Choose H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. AAC or MP3 are listed audio options; AAC is required for RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 surround sound.
- Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate only after checking the Pi’s encoder and measuring stable upload at the installation site. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video rates include:
| Output profile | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps — Google / YouTube Help, checked 2026 |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps — Google / YouTube Help, checked 2026 |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps — Google / YouTube Help, checked 2026 |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps — Google / YouTube Help, checked 2026 |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps — Google / YouTube Help, checked 2026 |
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps — Google / YouTube Help, checked 2026 |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed settings for your Pi or connection. Leave upload headroom for network variation, especially over Wi-Fi or mobile service. If the measured connection fluctuates, lower the bitrate or resolution and validate stream health rather than selecting a profile solely because it appears in YouTube’s table. YouTube also recommends a test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast.

Encode or pass through the source
When encoding is needed
When your source is not already in the desired compatible format, FFmpeg must encode it. Use an H.264 encoder that ffmpeg -encoders confirms is present, configure the output for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and include appropriate audio encoding when needed. Encoder names and supported options differ by build; inspect local FFmpeg help for the selected encoder before relying on example flags.
When stream copy may work
-c:v copy avoids video re-encoding only when the input video is already encoded in a YouTube-accepted format and its timestamps and container/output path work for live ingest. Copying does not make an incompatible codec, unsuitable timestamps, or an unsupported audio track compatible. Test the resulting stream privately before depending on it.

Run a private test, then monitor the live feed
- In Live Control Room, choose a private or unlisted test destination where available, then start FFmpeg with the correct input, RTMPS destination, stream key, and chosen output settings.
- Watch the preview and stream-health messages in YouTube. Confirm video and audio arrive, motion looks acceptable, and the stream remains stable.
- On the Pi, observe CPU load, dropped frames, temperature and throttling behavior, and network stability during a test long enough to represent the planned workload.
- If the test fails, change one variable at a time—input mode, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or encoding path—then repeat under realistic movement and audio conditions.
- Once stable, start the public broadcast and keep monitoring Live Control Room and the Pi during the stream.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong ingest URL, protocol, stream key, or stopped capture process | Copy the current destination and key from Live Control Room; verify the source is producing frames and FFmpeg remains running. Replace any exposed key. |
| Video arrives but is choppy or drops frames | Encoding load, unstable uplink, or an overly ambitious profile | Check CPU load, temperature/throttling, and actual upload stability. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then retest. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder | The local build lacks the named encoder | Check ffmpeg -encoders and select an encoder available on that installation or install an appropriate supported build. |
| Copied video is rejected or has timing problems | Source codec, timestamps, audio format, or output path is unsuitable | Inspect the source stream and test an encode path with compatible H.264 and audio settings. |
| Picture works but audio is missing or wrong | Input audio device/track was not selected, or codec/output settings do not match | Verify the input contains audio, select the correct track/device, and use a YouTube-listed audio codec. Test sound in the preview. |
| The stream disconnects when the internet fluctuates | Loss of uplink or local network interruption | Test at the stream location and intended time, improve the local connection where possible, and monitor YouTube’s health messages. A local FFmpeg process cannot transmit while its network path is unavailable. |
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Having a file or camera feed available does not by itself grant permission to stream its contents. Use video, music, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current policies and account notices before a recurring stream. A stream can be interrupted or restricted if its content or account does not meet YouTube requirements. For repeated or looping prerecorded material, consider whether the channel’s overall content is original and useful to viewers; technical continuity does not guarantee policy eligibility or monetization.
For a pre-stream rights check, use the copyright safety checklist.
