It added console Performance and Quality modes, while a separate PC update brought widescreen and ultrawide support, Steam Deck verification, and other fixes. Since then, Bethesda has also changed Creations storage and mod support; those later changes are separate from the 2024 launch.
What the April 2024 update included
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The April 25, 2024 console release provided native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions for owners of Fallout 4 on the relevant platform. Bethesda listed Performance and Quality modes, stability improvements, fixes, increased resolutions, and frame rates of up to 60 FPS. The PS4 and Xbox One versions also received an update, with stability, login, and quest fixes. Bethesda’s specifications describe targets, not independently measured results. PC
PC received a distinct update, not the native console upgrade. Bethesda announced widescreen and ultrawide support, Creation Kit and quest fixes, Steam Deck verification, and a release on the Epic Games Store. It also added free Creation Club content: the Enclave Remnants quest and items, the Makeshift Weapon Pack, and Halloween Workshop content. Bethesda’s April 11, 2024 announcement.
Performance vs Quality: what the console settings mean
Bethesda’s published console targets vary with the selected mode and display. The May 2024 follow-up added frame-rate choices of 30, 40, or 60 FPS and a Visuals/Performance preference on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Bethesda says the 40 FPS choice requires a 120 Hz display and recommends Performance for a 60 FPS target. Either preference may adjust internal resolution dynamically in demanding scenes. These are specifications and targets, not a guarantee of a locked frame rate in every scene.

Change these settings from the game’s main menu; Bethesda says they cannot be changed from within gameplay. The May 2024 notes identify that release’s builds as Xbox Series S|X 1.10.765, PS5 1.10.985, and PC/PS4/Xbox One 1.10.984. Those are historical build numbers for that update, not current-version identifiers. Bethesda’s Update 2 notes.
How to claim and play the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version
The native console version is a free update for owners of Fallout 4 on the relevant platform, but the route depends on how you own the game.

Xbox Series X|S
Eligible physical and digital Xbox One copies use Smart Delivery. If you own the Xbox One disc, it must be inserted to play on Xbox Series X. Bethesda’s download instructions.
PlayStation 5
For an eligible PS4 physical disc, use the disc to claim and play the PS5 version; the disc must remain inserted to play. Bethesda says the disc must have originated in the same country as the PSN account. If you own the digital PS4 game, select the PS5 Standard Edition from the game hub or search the PlayStation Store for the PS5 tile marked as owned. Bethesda’s download instructions.

PS5 DLC
If you own Fallout 4 DLC, download its PS5 versions for use with the PS5 game. Owning or installing the PS4 DLC does not substitute for installing the corresponding PS5 versions. Bethesda’s download instructions.
Later changes to Creations storage and mods
Bethesda’s May 27, 2026 patch notes describe expanded storage for Creations and platform-specific effects on installed content. These are later support changes, not features of the April 2024 Next-Gen Update.

The May 2026 patch notes also list fixes for issues involving the Creations menu, downloads, crashes, and other problems. On August 18, 2026, Bethesda reported increasing the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024 to better support larger mod collections. That patch also included Creation Kit changes and fixes, including fixes for a Steam Deck virtual-keyboard crash and a streaming-audio crash.
