To change a YouTube playlist’s privacy, open its settings, choose Public, Private, or Unlisted, then save. On desktop, the most direct route is YouTube Studio: Content > Playlists > Details > Visibility. On Android, open the playlist, tap Edit, choose its privacy setting, and tap Save.
Choose the right playlist privacy setting
The three options control who can find or access the playlist and whether its link can be shared. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes playlist visibility from the visibility of the individual videos in it; changing the playlist setting does not itself change each video’s access controls.
| Setting | Who can view or share it | Discovery and channel surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone can watch and share the playlist. | It may appear in YouTube search, related videos and recommendations, on your channel, and in subscriber feeds. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link can watch and share it. Recipients can pass the link on. | It does not appear in search, related videos and recommendations, on your channel, or in subscriber feeds, according to YouTube’s comparison. |
| Private | Restricted access; YouTube’s comparison says there is no shareable playlist URL. | It is hidden from the public discovery placements in YouTube’s comparison. YouTube and its human reviewers may still review private playlists for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention. |
Choose Public when you want people to discover the playlist, Unlisted when you want to share it by link without public discovery, or Private when it should not be publicly accessible.
Change a playlist’s privacy on desktop in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Content, then Playlists.
- Find the playlist and select Details.

- Select Save.
Change a playlist’s privacy from the YouTube website
- Sign in to YouTube and open You, then Playlists.
- Under the playlist, select View full playlist.
- Below the playlist title, select the current privacy setting.
- Choose the new setting. If prompted, confirm or save the change.
Change a playlist’s privacy in the Android app
- Open the YouTube app and go to your playlists. YouTube Help describes reaching this area through your profile picture and the Playlists area.
- Open the playlist and tap Edit.
- In Edit playlist, choose the privacy setting you want.
- Tap Save.
YouTube also provides a visibility control in the playlist edit workflow. App labels and locations can shift with updates; if the steps look different, look for the playlist’s Edit or Visibility control.

What to check if you cannot change visibility
- Confirm you own the playlist. YouTube says the playlist owner can change its privacy setting; another person’s playlist cannot be changed from your account.
- Check whether the account is supervised. The feature may not be available on supervised accounts.
- Distinguish playlist access from video access. A playlist’s privacy setting does not itself change the visibility settings of its videos. An individual video’s restrictions still apply.
- Do not confuse a creation limit with an edit restriction. YouTube states that there is a daily limit on creating public playlists across YouTube, YouTube Music, and the YouTube API, and that access to advanced features may increase the limit. This concerns creating public playlists; it does not mean you cannot change the visibility of an existing playlist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your playlist is part of a YouTube channel you want to keep live 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers a first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
