If OBS crashes, YouTube will not restart it for you. The practical fix is to prepare an independent backup encoder—usually a second computer—or a cloud continuity option, then rehearse how to switch while viewers are watching. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control stream behavior when an encoder sends or stops sending; they are not an OBS crash-restart feature. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains those controls.
Decide what viewers should see during a failure
Before choosing equipment or settings, define what “live” means if the primary OBS system goes down. Your backup might show a holding slide, play a prepared recording, or carry an alternate live program. Decide whether there should be silence, music, or narration, and tell viewers what to expect. The backup should be a planned scene or program—not an untested blank output.
Map the failure you need to cover. OBS may close or freeze while the computer remains healthy; the computer may lose power; the church’s internet may fail; or YouTube itself may be unavailable. A solution that handles one case may not handle the others.
Choose a recovery method
| Approach | What it can cover | Limits to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Relaunch OBS on the same computer | An OBS process failure if the computer, power, and network remain available. | May leave a visible interruption and will not help if the host computer, power, or network has failed. The sources do not establish an official OBS crash-watchdog recipe. YouTube stream controls are not a relaunch mechanism. YouTube; OBS. |
| Second computer with a backup encoder | A crash or maintenance issue affecting the primary computer, if the backup is prepared and can reach YouTube. | Requires setup and an operator or tested switching automation. Shared power or internet failures can still take both systems offline. This is a community-described pattern, not a platform guarantee. OBS Project forum discussion. |
| Cloud restream or failover service | May keep an outgoing stream running or show a holding graphic when a local feed disappears. | Adds a provider, configuration, and possible cost. Verify the handoff, event and viewer-URL behavior, and current terms; the cited community discussion does not validate a specific provider or guarantee seamless failover. OBS Project forum discussion. |
| YouTube backup ingestion URL | An alternate ingestion endpoint when the encoder and YouTube workflow support and configure it. | An endpoint is only a connection detail; it does not restart OBS or provide a backup encoder. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. |
| SRT/RIST relay design | Can add transport or relay options for suitable network architectures. | Advanced configuration adds complexity and may add relay bandwidth costs. It does not restart a crashed OBS process by itself. OBS Studio’s SRT/RIST guide. |
Compare approaches by which failures they cover, how quickly an operator can activate them, what viewers see, whether the viewer URL remains usable, whether backup power and network are independent, operational complexity, and recurring cost. The exact results depend on your church’s configuration; rehearse before relying on any option.

Prepare and rehearse a second encoder
- Document the primary setup securely. Record the event or stream workflow, output settings, scene and audio routing, and the authorized backup configuration. YouTube describes a stream key as the credential that tells an encoder where to send the feed; protect it like an account secret. A custom reusable key may suit a recurring workflow. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Build the backup program. On a second computer, configure OBS or another compatible encoder with the holding scene, alternate feed, or recording you have chosen. Check that its destination and output settings are compatible with the intended YouTube workflow. Do not assume that two encoders will take over automatically just because they have the same key or event selected.
- Check failure independence. A second computer still needs power, a network path, and access to YouTube. If both encoders share the same power source, router, or internet connection, a failure in that shared dependency can defeat the backup. A UPS may help bridge a brief local power interruption, but there is no universal specification that guarantees continuity.
- Run a representative test. YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Include speaking, music, camera movement, and transitions to silence. Check the Live Control Room preview and what a public viewer actually sees and hears; assess picture, audio, latency, and recovery steps. YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance.
- Practice a real handoff. In a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled event appropriate to your workflow, stop OBS or disconnect the primary encoder, start the backup, and note what viewers see and hear. Restore the primary using a documented hand-back procedure. Assign who diagnoses the problem, who activates the backup, and who checks YouTube.
What to do when OBS crashes
- Identify what failed. Confirm whether OBS alone stopped, the computer lost power, or the internet path failed. Avoid repeatedly starting encoders without checking which system is currently sending.
- Activate the rehearsed backup. Start the prepared second encoder or the configured cloud continuity workflow. Use the planned holding scene or alternate program.
- Check YouTube’s incoming signal. In Live Control Room, check for the preview, incoming signal, and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health while live. YouTube guidance.
- Hand back deliberately. Once the primary system is stable, follow the rehearsed procedure rather than starting it blindly alongside the backup. If the stream ended or a new event is needed, select the correct scheduled event and settings; do not assume the former viewer URL remains valid after a long interruption.
- Record the incident. Save OBS logs and note the time, symptoms, network state, and recovery action. If the issue involved disconnection or dropped frames, use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
Separate an OBS crash from a connection problem
OBS closed or froze, but the computer and network are working
This is a process-recovery problem. A watchdog or operating-system task might relaunch OBS, but it is not true failover: viewers may see an interruption, and the approach cannot help if the computer itself has failed. The sources here do not establish an official OBS crash-restart configuration. For continuity, prepare and test a separate sender.
OBS is running but frames drop or the stream disconnects
Investigate the path from the computer to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its suggestions include lowering bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, using a wired connection, and checking network software, drivers, modem/router, cables, and other network devices. These steps address connectivity; they will not reopen OBS after a process crash. OBS troubleshooting.

The computer or local power fails
A second encoder only helps if it has sufficiently independent power and network access. A UPS can bridge some short interruptions, but it cannot solve an extended outage or a network failure. Include power and network in the rehearsal, not just the encoder handoff.
The internet connection or YouTube is unavailable
A second computer on the same internet connection will not solve a shared network outage. An independently routed connection or provider-side continuity may address some failure paths, but adds cost or operational dependencies and does not guarantee uninterrupted viewing. Decide whether the improvement is worth those trade-offs for your church.

Use settings that fit the actual stream
Choose bitrate for codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube publishes bitrate guidance by format. For H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, its current table lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are ingestion recommendations, not proof that a church connection can sustain the stream. Consult the row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test with upload headroom and representative content. YouTube’s encoder settings table.
Test transport and protocol assumptions
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its HLS setup instructions require an HLS-capable encoder and provide a backup server URL when backup ingestion is needed; YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Neither a backup URL nor a protocol choice keeps OBS alive after a process crash. Make sure the encoder, protocol, and YouTube workflow match before the event. RTMPS and encoder guidance; HLS setup.

Understand auto-start and auto-stop
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options govern whether encoder activity starts or stops the YouTube stream when enabled. They do not monitor OBS or relaunch it after a crash. Treat them as stream controls, not as a recovery plan. YouTube live stream settings.
