Convert an AVI or WMV only if its codecs or playback behavior require it; changing the filename extension does not convert a video. First inspect the file, then either remux compatible streams or transcode to a playback-friendly format. Finally, loop the prepared file in OBS or another encoder and send the resulting live feed to YouTube over RTMPS. Conversion prepares media; it does not itself create or keep a live stream running.
How the conversion and live stream fit together
AVI and WMV describe container or file families, not one fixed combination of video and audio codecs. Two files with the same extension can need different handling. A converter changes or repackages their media streams; streaming software then reads the prepared media, encodes a live feed, and sends it to YouTube.
For a single clip, a straightforward workflow is inspect, convert only if needed, test playback, and set the source to loop. For several clips, use a playlist source or create a continuous program, then check the transitions. A loop repeats media, but does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation: the streaming host, network, power, software, and content rights remain relevant.
Inspect the AVI or WMV before converting
Use a media inspector such as FFmpeg’s ffprobe to identify the video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, duration, rotation, and whether an audio stream exists. The exact conversion depends on those properties and on what the playback software can decode.

FFmpeg can read and transcode media, but there is no universal command that guarantees every AVI or WMV variant will work or preserve quality. If the source streams already suit the intended playback chain, consider copying the streams into another container rather than encoding them again. FFmpeg describes the distinction directly: “Transcoding is the process of decoding a stream and then encoding it again.” Its documentation notes that transcoding is computationally expensive and, in most cases, degrades quality because it is lossy. Convert only when playback requires it
Option 1: Make an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a practical starting point for broad playback compatibility, but inspect the source and test the result rather than assuming every file needs this conversion. FFmpeg documents this basic example:
ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4
Replace the input filename with your actual file. The example is a basic conversion, not a promise of particular output quality, resolution, or compatibility; FFmpeg chooses output handling based on the input and build. Review the result, especially audio, rotation, frame rate, and picture quality. For WMV, substitute the actual filename, such as input.wmv.

Option 2: Avoid a generation of loss when streams already fit
If inspection confirms the video and audio codecs are already suitable, a stream-copy operation may avoid re-encoding. Container compatibility and the media source’s decoder still matter, so test the remuxed file in the actual playback setup. Do not treat renaming .avi or .wmv to .mp4 as conversion: the container and streams remain unchanged.

Several clips need a playlist or a joined program
For a sequence, a playlist-capable source can preserve separate files and make it easier to change order. If you join files into one program, their stream parameters must be compatible for concatenation without re-encoding. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat demuxer for cases where re-encoding is not wanted and the formats permit it, and the concat filter when concatenation with re-encoding is needed. Check audio and video at every join; do not assume clips with different properties will transition cleanly. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Loop the prepared media in OBS
- Add a source: In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the prepared file. OBS documentation lists AVI among supported media types, but the particular codec and system decoder still affect playback.
- Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS defines this setting as whether the file plays again after playback completes.
- Test a full cycle: Listen for audio, watch the final seconds and restart, and confirm the source returns to the beginning. For a playlist or multiple sources, test every transition and any gaps or overlaps.
- Check the whole chain: Confirm the encoder receives the intended scene and that the YouTube preview shows the right picture and sound before launching publicly.

Configure the YouTube live encoder
YouTube ingests a live encoder feed; it does not simply loop an uploaded AVI or WMV as a live broadcast. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted option. The exact controls and labels depend on the encoder you use.
Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, and should fit your stable upstream capacity. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists these examples:

These are YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality or performance. Its table gives other values for other resolutions and frame rates, so consult the YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance when choosing your output. YouTube says, “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose.” That detection does not remove the need to configure a compatible feed and monitor its health.

Check channel eligibility and preflight the stream
Before scheduling a 24/7 broadcast, confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days; age requirements also apply. Follow the current YouTube live-streaming setup guidance.
- Confirm the prepared file plays through its end and restarts or advances as intended.
- Check dialogue, music, and other audio in the live preview; a missing audio stream in the source may otherwise go unnoticed.
- Check motion, framing, rotation, transitions, and the selected output resolution.
- Test before going live, then monitor YouTube’s stream messages and health during operation.
- If you record locally as a backup, verify that the archive is being created and that storage is available.
- Use only media you have the rights to stream. A technically valid loop does not establish permission to rebroadcast the content.
YouTube’s encoder setup explains that an encoder converts video to a digital format for streaming; its live guidance recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream health.
Keep a DIY 24/7 stream running
With OBS, the loop repeats the selected media source, but OBS still has to run on a powered computer with a working connection. Power loss, a computer restart, a network interruption, a software fault, or a YouTube disconnect can stop the broadcast. If you need continuity, plan monitoring and a way to recover from those failures; a loop setting alone is not redundancy.

When a local setup makes sense
- You want a graphical preview and direct control of scenes or transitions.
- You can keep the encoder computer powered and maintain stable upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
- You can monitor the stream and respond if the computer, software, network, or YouTube connection fails.
For a command-line FFmpeg workflow, the same constraints apply: the media must be readable, the program must be configured to loop or sequence content, and the encoder process and network connection must stay available. The specific command depends on codecs, stream key handling, and desired output settings; the conversion example above is not a live-stream command.
