Your stream’s bitrate, whether you transcode video, and how much server administration you want to handle are equally important.
Which provider fits your stream?
Choose by the workload and the specific plan, not by provider name alone. A continuously transmitted feed can use several terabytes per month, while real-time transcoding can put substantially different demands on CPU than simply looping already encoded files.

OVHcloud may suit you if the selected VPS tier’s published bandwidth and unlimited-traffic terms fit your workload and you prefer that allowance model. Consider Hetzner only after confirming your chosen location’s traffic allowance and possible overage; its dedicated-resource class may be worth assessing if you need more predictable CPU for real-time encoding. This is conditional guidance, not a measured performance ranking.
Estimate monthly traffic from your stream bitrate
For a continuous constant-bitrate stream, a useful decimal-terabyte estimate is: bitrate in Mbps × 86,400 × 30 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000. This assumes 30 uninterrupted days and excludes protocol overhead; actual transfer varies with bitrate and transmission overhead.

These are arithmetic estimates, not provider-reported usage figures. Compare your estimate with the exact plan’s current terms, and monitor actual outbound traffic after launch. Hetzner says outgoing traffic beyond the included amount is billed in 100 MB blocks; usage notifications do not cap traffic.
Plan upload capacity and encoding around the feed
Leave network headroom
YouTube recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. For a 6 Mbps feed, that means at least 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity for that feed, before accounting for a backup stream or other concurrent traffic. YouTube warns that the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends testing the setup. A provider’s advertised bandwidth does not remove the need to test your particular encoder-to-YouTube path.

Decide whether the server will transcode
If your playlist consists of files already encoded to the output profile, the server’s job is different from decoding and re-encoding them in real time. Real-time transcoding is more CPU-intensive. No provider-specific FFmpeg benchmark here establishes what resolution or frame rate a particular OVHcloud VPS or Hetzner Cloud plan can transcode; benchmark your chosen files and settings before committing to a plan.
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live encoder delivery. Select an encoder profile using YouTube’s current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then use that feed’s bitrate for the traffic and headroom calculations above. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into different output formats for viewers. HDR has separate requirements—YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for HLS output with HEVC and specific segment rules—so do not apply HDR configuration to a standard SDR stream.

Set up either VPS as a self-managed streaming host
The provider comparison does not remove the work of configuring, securing, and monitoring a server. These steps outline the essential workflow without assuming a particular operating system, encoder, or plan can handle a specific resolution.
- Choose the exact plan and region. Check the provider’s current product terms for bandwidth, traffic allowance, CPU class, price, and any IP charges. For Hetzner, verify the allowance for the specific location and Cloud Server family; for OVHcloud, verify the selected VPS tier’s public bandwidth and traffic terms.
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Ensure the content and broadcast comply with YouTube policies.
- Prepare a stable playlist and output profile. Decide whether to relay pre-encoded files or transcode. Set the encoder to YouTube’s current recommended settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate, use RTMPS, and calculate egress from the stream bitrate.
- Configure the YouTube stream key securely. Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream key into the encoder, and keep it private. Anyone with access to the key may be able to broadcast to your channel; rotate it if it is exposed.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Verify playback, audio, bitrate, and the full server-to-YouTube network path. YouTube notes that a network disruption can break a stream; confirm that your encoder and playlist resume as intended after a process or connection interruption.
- Monitor and recover. Configure process restart and alerts, watch outbound traffic against the plan’s allowance, and check the YouTube live control room for ingest or stream warnings. An availability commitment from the host is not a substitute for monitoring the encoder, source files, network path, and YouTube ingest.
What can interrupt a 24/7 broadcast?
A VPS is only one part of the broadcast chain. A server may remain available while the stream stops because the playlist process exits, a source file fails, the outbound path degrades, the stream key is wrong, or YouTube ingest has a problem. Likewise, the 99.9% figures in provider terms describe provider commitments with their own qualifications; they are not an end-to-end promise that a YouTube channel will remain live continuously.

- Encoder or playlist failure: check logs and source files, and configure a supervised restart and alert.
- Network interruption: test the actual route to YouTube, retain the recommended upload headroom, and verify reconnect behavior.
- Traffic overage: estimate monthly egress from bitrate, confirm the plan’s allowance, and monitor usage; Hetzner notifications do not stop billable overage.
- Channel or content restriction: verify live-stream eligibility and ensure the playlist complies with YouTube rules.
- Unexpected CPU load: determine whether the workflow is transcoding, then measure resource use under the actual encoding settings.
