Run your GStreamer pipeline in the foreground as a systemd service and set Restart=on-failure with a short delay. That restarts the process after an eligible failure exit—but it cannot detect a stream that has stopped sending media while the process remains alive. For that case, the GStreamer application or a foreground wrapper must handle pipeline errors or monitor stream health.
Before you create the service
First confirm the exact pipeline works when run manually as the same user, with the same environment, working directory, and GStreamer plugins the service will use. Verify that YouTube receives both audio and video, not merely that gst-launch-1.0 starts without an immediate error. GStreamer describes gst-launch-1.0 primarily as a debugging tool and recommends using the GStreamer API for applications: GStreamer gst-launch documentation.
Get the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; do not rely on a copied example endpoint for a production stream. Keep the stream key out of public repositories, world-readable unit files, and logs. Use a credential or restricted environment mechanism appropriate to your host and systemd version. YouTube encoder settings and live-stream guidance.
Create a foreground systemd service
Save a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/gstreamer-youtube.service, adapting the account, paths, and pipeline to your setup:

Description=GStreamer YouTube live stream

After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/home/streamer
ExecStart=/usr/bin/gst-launch-1.0 -e <YOUR_PIPELINE>
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
This is a template, not a tested unit for a particular machine. Replace <YOUR_PIPELINE> with the command that passed your manual test, and confirm option syntax and any start-limiting settings against the systemd version installed on the host. Keep the stream command in the foreground: if a shell wrapper backgrounds the pipeline and exits, systemd supervises the wrapper rather than the long-running process.
Restart=on-failure is appropriate when an unsuccessful exit should trigger a restart. Avoid using Restart=always blindly, since it can restart after an intentional clean stop. A five-second delay is an example, not a universal value; adjust it if repeated failures are likely or the service needs more time between attempts.

Load, enable, and inspect the service
- Reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now gstreamer-youtube.service. - Check the service state:
systemctl status gstreamer-youtube.service. - Read its logs:
journalctl -u gstreamer-youtube.service. Add-fto follow new log entries while diagnosing startup. - Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the incoming stream and its health; a running systemd unit alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving media.
These are conventional system-service commands. They may require administrator privileges, and distribution conventions or the exact unit name can differ.
What systemd can—and cannot—restart
Systemd applies the restart policy when the supervised process exits in a way that qualifies under that policy. GStreamer applications receive pipeline messages on a bus; its documentation strongly recommends handling error messages and notes that media handling can stall after an error. Consequently, a pipeline can stop doing useful streaming work while its process remains alive. Systemd will not restart a process that has not exited simply because the stream is unhealthy. Choose a recovery strategy for the failure you need to handle
| Approach | What it can recover from | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
Foreground process with Restart=on-failure |
An eligible unsuccessful process exit. | Whether media is still flowing when the process remains alive. |
| Application handles bus errors and end-of-stream | The application can clean up and deliberately retry, or exit nonzero so systemd can restart it. | Stream health unless the application or another monitor checks it. |
| Health monitoring | A separately defined stream-health check can identify silent stalls and trigger an appropriate recovery action. | Correct recovery behavior without a monitor and recovery mechanism designed for the pipeline. |
For robust recovery, use a small application built with the GStreamer API, or a wrapper that remains in the foreground, watches relevant bus messages, cleans up the pipeline, and either retries deliberately or exits unsuccessfully. If a wrapper supervises a child process, it must also propagate termination signals and the child’s exit status correctly. GStreamer’s tutorial covers handling messages and the distinct state-change behavior of live pipelines, including GST_STATE_CHANGE_NO_PREROLL: GStreamer streaming tutorial.
Check YouTube ingest and encoder settings
Use the ingest details currently shown for your YouTube broadcast and select encoder settings appropriate to the stream and account’s ingest configuration. YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflows, recommends RTMPS, and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs. It recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube encoder settings and live-stream guidance.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
As examples from YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 bitrate table, the guidance lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular pipeline, connection, or ingest configuration will work at those settings. YouTube also says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test with movement and audio representative of the planned broadcast, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
GStreamer documents rtmpsink as an element for delivering data to an RTMP server and includes a sample FLV pipeline. That establishes the element’s role; it does not mean any arbitrary pipeline is compatible with YouTube’s current ingest details or your selected encoder settings. GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.

Troubleshoot common restart and streaming failures
- The service exits and does not restart: Check
Restart=on-failure, the process exit result, and the unit’s journal. Confirm the installed systemd version and any start limits before changing restart behavior. - The service is active, but YouTube receives no stream: An active process is not a stream-health check. Inspect the GStreamer logs and YouTube Live Control Room; add application-level error handling or health monitoring if the pipeline can stall without exiting.
- The pipeline works in a terminal but fails as a service: Compare the service’s user, executable path, working directory, environment, and plugin availability with the successful manual run. A system service may not inherit your interactive shell’s environment.
- Repeated restarts never produce a healthy broadcast: Check the current ingest URL and key, pipeline compatibility, encoder settings, and network upload capacity. Use a deliberate restart delay and examine each attempt’s logs rather than assuming process restarts resolve the underlying fault.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Test representative audio and motion, review YouTube’s health messages, and verify bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, and connection against the current encoder guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream rather than operate a GStreamer host, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start the free first day.
