To find out whether you can upgrade it, look up the computer’s exact model in the manufacturer’s specifications and service documentation. The amount reported by the operating system does not tell you whether memory is removable or what the computer’s supported maximum is.
Check installed RAM in Windows, macOS, or Linux
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Performance, then Memory.
- Read the total memory shown. Task Manager may also report details such as memory speed and slots used.
For another view, open System Information and find Installed Physical Memory. On supported ASUS computers, the MyASUS app may also show system information. Treat slot counts in a software screen as clues, not proof that a slot is physically available or usable.
macOS
Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac to see the memory macOS recognizes. That figure answers how much memory is installed or available to the operating system; it does not establish that the Mac can accept more.
Linux
Open a terminal and run:
cat /proc/meminfo
Read the MemTotal line. It is an operating-system report, and its value may differ slightly from the advertised installed capacity because of units and memory reserved for system use. Firmware or diagnostic tools may report additional hardware details, but a reported slot count alone does not prove a usable physical slot exists.

Find out whether your computer’s RAM is upgradeable
Upgradeability depends on the exact model and its internal design, not just on how much memory the operating system reports. Use the manufacturer’s documentation before buying a module or opening the computer.
- Identify the exact computer. Record its full model name and product or model number. Check System Information, the computer’s label, or a manufacturer utility. A marketing name or product-family name may not be specific enough.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that model. Read its technical specifications and the relevant user guide, maintenance or service guide, or memory-upgrade instructions. ASUS directs owners to the model page’s Tech Specs; HP points users to its Maintenance and Service Guide or Upgrading and Servicing Guide.
- Check how memory is installed. Look for terms such as soldered, onboard, integrated, removable, or service-provider-upgradeable. Some computers combine fixed memory with a replaceable slot.
- Confirm the supported configuration. Check maximum total capacity, per-slot limits, available and populated slots, memory generation and type, form factor, speed, and any requirements for module combinations or matched slots.
- Follow the documented service route. If the guide says memory is not user-serviceable or calls for authorized service, do not treat a listed maximum or a seemingly open slot as permission to install RAM yourself. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if the documentation leaves the configuration unclear.
What model-specific documentation can reveal
Memory designs vary even within a manufacturer’s product range. For example, ASUS documents a configuration with 8 GB of onboard memory that cannot be replaced plus an expandable SO-DIMM that can add up to 8 GB, for 16 GB total in that specific example. It is not a general specification for ASUS computers.

Apple’s guidance also varies by model. Apple says memory in 24-inch iMac models released in 2021 or later is integrated into the Apple M-series package and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Other iMac models differ: some have a memory access door, while others do not offer user-removable memory. Do not apply one iMac generation’s procedure to another Mac.

Once the official documentation confirms a replaceable slot, match a candidate module to the complete specification rather than shopping by capacity alone. A laptop typically uses SO-DIMM memory, while a desktop typically uses DIMM; the exact supported type and configuration must come from the model documentation.

- Confirm the memory generation and type, form factor, and supported speed.
- Check the computer’s maximum total and per-slot capacity.
- Account for memory already installed and any slot-population or matching requirements.
- Use the manufacturer’s installation procedure and service guidance. Tool needs are model-specific; for example, Apple’s guide calls for a Phillips screwdriver to open the RAM access door on iMac models that have one.
Do not infer compatibility from a generic memory scanner, a chipset limit, or an apparently unused slot in Task Manager. If the manufacturer’s documentation does not settle the question, verify it with support or an authorized repair provider before ordering.
