Yes—you can move a Dragon Quest XI S save from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2, but to use that progress you must launch the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Nintendo says saves are incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 editions. Transfer a single save with Nintendo’s nearby-console tool, or restore an existing cloud backup if you have one.
Which version can use your existing save?
A save from the Nintendo Switch version can be transferred to Switch 2 and played in that same Switch version. Nintendo lists the original version as supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. The separate Switch 2 edition cannot load that save: Nintendo’s product listings state, “Save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch™ and Nintendo Switch™ 2 versions.”
Moving the save between consoles does not convert it to the Switch 2 edition. Nintendo’s listings do not document a conversion tool or workaround. Nintendo also says there are no plans to sell an upgrade pack to turn the Switch version into the Switch 2 version.
Transfer one save while you have both consoles
Nintendo’s nearby-console save transfer is the direct option when the original Switch is available. It does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but both consoles must be online, close to each other, and have the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user on each console.

- On both consoles, connect to the internet and make sure they are near each other. Link the same Nintendo Account to the user you will use on each system.
- On the source Switch, open System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data → Send Save Data to Another Console. Choose the user and the Dragon Quest XI S save, then continue.
- On Switch 2, open System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data → Receive Save Data and follow the prompt.
- On Switch 2, start the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI S to continue the transferred progress.
This is a move, not a copy: Nintendo says the save is deleted from the source console after sending. If the target console already has a save for the game, receiving may require overwriting it; Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered. Check which save you want to keep before confirming.
Restore a cloud backup if the original Switch is unavailable
If you previously backed up the save with Save Data Cloud, sign in to Switch 2 with the same Nintendo Account and download that backup from the game’s Save Data Cloud menu or via System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud. Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use Save Data Cloud.

Nintendo says cloud backups for Nintendo Switch software can be shared between Switch and Switch 2 when you use the same Nintendo Account. That console-level support does not make the two game editions’ saves interchangeable: after restoring the backup, launch the Nintendo Switch version to use it. Downloading a backup replaces existing save data for that game on the console, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered.

Do not confuse a save transfer with a full system transfer
Nintendo’s Switch-to-Switch 2 system transfer moves more than one game save. Its server-transfer process initializes the original Switch after upload, while local system transfer can delete source data for some users and games. If your goal is only to move Dragon Quest XI S progress and both consoles are available, use the individual nearby save-transfer steps above. If you intend to transfer the whole system, read Nintendo’s current instructions and on-console prompts before starting.
