Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN if you are new to the series and want the easier game to access across modern platforms. Its story stands on its own, so you do not need to play ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR first. Choose ZERO first if you specifically want the earlier origin-story context and can play its PlayStation 2 release.
Do you need to play Zero before Ace Combat 7?
No. Bandai Namco says the series’ numbered games have self-contained stories, even though they share the fictional world of Strangereal. ACE COMBAT 7 is therefore a reasonable starting point without prior knowledge of ZERO. ZERO adds optional lore context: Bandai Namco describes it as an origin story for the ACE COMBAT universe, not as required background for 7.
The games are best compared on story context, access, and the gameplay system each foregrounds. The available official descriptions do not establish a definitive winner for enjoyment, difficulty, campaign length, or graphics quality.
How the two games differ
| Choice factor | ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR | ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN |

| Story focus | The game’s Ace Style system links the player’s approach and choices in battle to story outcome and pilot identity. | The conflict includes Erusean drone warfare and follows the hopes and ambitions of multiple squadrons. |
| Official platform information | The series archive lists PlayStation 2. Current standalone availability is not established by the official sources cited here. | Officially listed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch; editions vary by region and format. |

What makes Zero distinctive?
Bandai Namco’s June 2, 2026 announcement identifies ZERO as a 2006 entry and highlights its Ace Style gauge. The gauge responds to how missions are approached and to choices made in battle; the publisher says this can shape the story outcome and the player’s identity as a pilot. That gives ZERO a distinctive mission-and-choice emphasis, but it does not make the game a prerequisite for understanding ACE COMBAT 7.

What makes Ace Combat 7 a practical starting point?
ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN was released on January 17, 2019. Its official product description sets the story amid war between the Osean Federation and the Kingdom of Erusea, including Erusean drone deployment and the ambitions of multiple squadrons. Bandai Namco lists the game for PS4, Xbox One, Steam, and Switch, so it is the more straightforward choice if you want options beyond the PS2 entry.
Platform details matter: Bandai Namco’s Switch listing is for a Deluxe Edition and says flight sticks and VR mode are not supported on Switch. Those limitations are specific to that listing and should not be generalized to other platforms. Check the edition and regional store page before buying.

Where can you play Zero now?
Bandai Namco’s official series archive lists ACE COMBAT ZERO for PlayStation 2. A June 2026 announcement mentioned a digital copy of ZERO as a bonus with ACE COMBAT 8 digital preorders, but that was a dated offer; it does not establish that ZERO is currently sold as a standalone game on modern platforms. Confirm current availability for your region and platform before making plans to play it.

- Choose ACE COMBAT 7 first if you are new to the series, want a self-contained story, or need a game listed for modern console and PC platforms.
- Choose ZERO first if you are deliberately following the earlier origin-story context and already have access to its PS2 release.
- Play both if you want to experience ZERO’s earlier lore and then move to 7; the publisher’s self-contained-story framing means you can also reverse that order.
Bandai Namco reported in January 2026 that ACE COMBAT 7 had surpassed 7 million units sold worldwide. That is the publisher’s reported milestone, not an independent market estimate, and it does not determine which game is the better fit for you.
